Double Olympic champion Yuzuru Hanyu hobbled off the ice after winning figure skating's Rostelecom Cup by nearly 30 points - but still wasn't happy.
Hanyu skated through the pain after a hard practice fall before his free skate - but still had the highest scoring routine, landing three quadruple jumps.
However, he admits he is facing a battle to be fit for the Grand Prix final in three weeks, where Olympic silver medallist Shoma Uno and world champion Nathan Chen likely await in the season's first big showdown.
"It really hurts," he said, after his commanding win over Georgia's Morisi Kvitelashvili and Japan's Kazuki Tomono.
"This injury made me change my program, and sadly I couldn't perform the way I wanted. I could have done better."
Russia's Mikhail Kolyada and Canada's Keegan Messing will both be sweating on their qualification for the end of series final, after missing the podium. That means Chen will only need a straightforward top-six finish at next week's Internationaux de France.
Elsewhere, Russia's Alexandra Stepanova and Ivan Bukin won the ice dance event while compatriots Evgenia Tarasova and Vladimir Morozov proved too strong for rivals in the pairs - wins that secure their final places.
And it was another home skater who led a Russian 1-2 in the women's competition, Olympic champion Alina Zagitova a confident winner over Sofia Samudurova.
