The last event of the Grand Prix of Figure Skating Series 2016/2017 came to an end in Sapporo on Sunday and it was Canada’s Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir who took the final honours with victory in the NHK Trophy ice dance competition.
The 2010 Olympic champions and 2014 silver medallists scored a personal best of 116.37 in their free dance which gave them a total of 195.84 points when combined with Saturday’s short dance.
That score set a new record total score and surpassed Meryl Davis and Charlie White’s record of 195.52 set at the 2014 Olympic Winter Games.
Moir said: “Tessa and I always have been a team that doesn’t really pay attention to the points.
“It is kind of great to hear that you got a world record score, but it doesn’t really mean very much. For us, the focus is just on our skating and just being in the mix again.
Silver went to France’s Gabriella Papadakis and Guillaume Cizeron who scored 111.06 from their free dance to maintain their second-place standing on 186.66 while Italy’s Anna Cappellini and Luca Lanotte completed the podium in third on 180.42 after scoring 108.42 for their free dance.
