A new name and official backing from BMW, new riders, new tyres: independent German team NRT 48-BMW Motorrad, which grabbed attention at the Bol d’Or last September, is back with renewed appetite in 2018.
Team NRT 48-BMW Motorrad’s fight for a podium spot had viewers on the edge of their seats during the last few laps of the Bol d’Or last September. That performance has given wings to the aspirations of the independent German squad, which has progressed by leaps and bounds in its first season in Formula EWC, the premier class of the FIM EWC world championship
The Oschersleben-based team managed by Ingo Nowaczik has since garnered official backing from BMW Motorrad and now goes by the name Team NRT48-BMW Motorrad. The team has also changed its tyre supplier and will be Pirelli-shod for the remainder of the season, Suzuka 8 Hours included.
The 2018 version of Team NRT48-BMW Motorrad also features a new rider line-up. Frenchman Kenny Foray, British rider Peter Hickman, Austrian rider Stefan Kerschbaumer and Germany’s Lucy Glöckner will share stints on the BMW S 1000 RR #48.
Kenny Foray won the 2017 French Superbike championship on a BMW, and the 2014 endurance world championship as a member of the GMT94 Yamaha line-up.
Peter Hickman finished 4th in the 2017 BSB championship, riding for Smiths Racing BMW.
Stefan Kerschbaumer placed 5th in the German Superbike championship (IDM) in 2017. He pulled off the team’s 4th-place finish at the 2017 Bol d’Or together with Lucy Glöckner.
Lucy is the new team’s back-up rider. The young German rider has a few other projects in the offing. She will be competing in the 2018 Pikes Peak International Hill Climb 2018 in Colorado on 24 June – a thrilling 20-km mountain race with nearly 160 turns at an altitude of over 2,000 metres.
