Salah was taken off in the closing minutes of his team’s 4-1 win over Swaziland and the Egyptian Football Federation announced on Saturday that the forward would not be available for the return fixture on Tuesday.
In a statement, they said: "[Head coach] Javier Aguirre decided to allow Salah to return back to Liverpool to give him extra rest, as medical scans revealed that getting him ready for Tuesday's match would be difficult.
"During the previous match against Swaziland, Salah complained of stress in the musculoskeletal muscle. He was examined medically and radiation was performed on the area of complaint after the game."
Egyptian newspaper Yallakora said that the 26-year-old would undergo tests on his return to Merseyside, to determine the nature of the injury, though Egypt’s assistant coach Hany Ramzy played down the injury which he said was not serious.
After the Africa Nations Cup qualifier on Friday, Aguirre criticised the conditions at Cairo’s Al-Salam stadium, claiming the pitch was “very poor.”
Liverpool are due to host Huddersfield at Anfield on October 20, after the international break.
