Welbeck was taken off on a stretcher and given oxygen in his side's Europa League game against Sporting on Thursday after landing awkwardly from an attempted header.
He was carried off the pitch minutes later to a standing ovation from the home fans.
Arsenal said in a statement that 27-year-old Welbeck would continue to be assessed.
"Significant right ankle injury," said Arsenal. "Danny remains in hospital and will continue to be assessed. A further update will be issued over the next 72 hours."
"The worst news tonight are these injuries," said manager Unai Emery on Thursday night. "We think it's a serious injury.
"Every injury is different. He broke something in his ankle and it's a different injury than another.
"Now he's at the hospital and the news is at the moment we are going to wait, but we think this is a serious injury."
Manchester United and England players Jesse Lingard, Ashley Young and Marcus Rashford all expressed sympathy.
