The East Asian Championship involves Japan, China, North Korea and South Korea, who won the competition two years ago.
Brazilian Zico has left out Japan's European-based contingent, including Hidetoshi Nakata and Shunsuke Nakamura.
Japan take on North Korea in a politically charged opener on July 31 before facing China on August 3 and fierce rivals South Korea four days later.
