The 25-year-old shot stopper was seen as the natural heir to Oliver Kahn in between the sticks when the former Germany international retired at the end of the 2007-08 season.
But Rensing's poor form at the start of the current campaign has seen him fall behind Hans-Jorg Butt in coach Louis van Gaal's pecking order and he envisages his future elsewhere.
"There is no sense in me remaining," he told Sport Bild magazine.
"My position as Oliver Kahn's successor was not easy right from the start.
"Particularly since the club was undergoing a revolution.
"This situation and the lack of success did not help me to be judged objectively."
Rensing admitted he probably should have quit the Bavarian club before now and that he needs "two or three years elsewhere, which is what I will do now".
"Errors are not forgiven at FC Bayern."
