Borussia Dortmund 1-0 Hertha Berlin Dortmund strengthen their grip on second place with an ultimately convincing 1-0 win over in-form Hertha. Emre Can scored the only goal in the 58th minute, but Dortmund were much the better team.
- OffRaphaël GuerreiroBorussia Dortmund
- OnMarcel SchmelzerBorussia Dortmund
A Dortmund change: Schmeltzer for Guerreiro.
Jarstein makes a fine save from Sancho! It was lovely play from Dortmund, with Sancho and Guerreiro combining sweetly on the left. Sancho tried to clip a close-range shot back across Jarstein, who saved with his feet.
- OffAlexander EssweinHertha Berlin
- OnLazar SamardzicHertha Berlin
And Samardzic replaces the substitute Esswein.
- OffMarko GrujicHertha Berlin
- OnArne MaierHertha Berlin
Hertha make their last two changes. Maier replaces Grujic...
Hertha are huffing and puffing, but there's a lack on conviction in their attacking play. I'm not sure they really believe they can score an equaliser.
Dortmund appeal for a penalty when Can's shot bounces up to hit the hand of Boyata. VAR decides there's nothing to see here, although it looked like a penalty under the new laws.
1-0 is a precarious lead, almost as dangerous as 2-0, but at the moment it looks like Dortmund have the game under control.
- OffAxel WitselBorussia Dortmund
- OnLeonardo BalerdiBorussia Dortmund
And Balerdi replaces Axel Witsel.
- OffThorgan HazardBorussia Dortmund
- OnMateu MoreyBorussia Dortmund
Another Dortmund change: Morey on, Hazard off.
- Yellow cardKrzysztof PiatekHertha Berlin
Now Piatek is booked for a foul on Hakimi. IT'S RAINING YELLOW CARDS.
It's absolutely pelting down in Dortmund.
- Yellow cardAlexander EssweinHertha Berlin
Esswein is booked for a foul on Reyna.
Hertha are dominating possession for the first time since the opening 10 minutes, though they still haven't really given Burki anything to do.
Ngankam is fouled just outside the area by Hazard. The free-kick is to the right of centre. Darida floats it beyond the far post, Boyata heads it down and Dortmund clear.
Hertha have struggled all night going forward. They are without some of their best attacking players, mind you.
- OffJulian BrandtBorussia Dortmund
- OnGiovanni ReynaBorussia Dortmund
A Dortmund change: Giovanni Reyna, 17, replaces Julian Brandt.
A vicious shot from Darida, 25 yards from goal, is well blocked by Witsel.
- OffPer Ciljan SkjelbredHertha Berlin
- OnKrzysztof PiatekHertha Berlin
Another Hertha change: Skjelbred off, Piatek on.
As against Paderborn on Sunday, Dortmund look much sharper in the second half. That match was also goalless at half-time; it ended 6-1.
- GoalEmre CanBorussia Dortmund
GOAL! Dortmund 1-0 Hertha (Can) Emre Can gives Dortmund the lead with a fine goal! Sancho, on the left, dinked a pass into the area towards Brandt. He cushioned a header inside to Can, who waited for the ball to bounce before guiding a low first-time shot past Jarstein from 17 yards.
Just wide from Esswein! That's the closest Hertha have come to scoring. Darida's through ball was dummied neatly by Ibisevic, which allowed Esswein to run diagonally onto the ball and whip a first-time shot back across goal from 18 yards. It beat the diving Burki and curled just wide of the post.
Hakimi blazes over the bar from 20 yards.
Sancho misses a great chance! Witsel played in the overlapping Hakimi on the right. His low cross beat everyone in the middle and came to Guerreiro, who slid it straight back towards Sancho on the six-yard line. He opened his body up so that he could sidefoot a first-time shot, but steered it just wide of the near post.
Hertha's centre-backs, Torunarigha and Boyata, have been terrific so far.
Dortmund open Hertha up with some lovely passing, but then Delaney plays a poor ball across the area towards Sancho that is intercepted.
- OffDodi LukebakioHertha Berlin
- OnJessic NgankamHertha Berlin
Hertha made another change at half-time, with Jessic Ngankam on for Lukeabkio.
Peep peep! Dortmund begin the second half.
- End of 1st Half
Dortmund 0-0 Hertha That's the end of a half that was pretty high on quality but low on entertainment. Thorgan Hazard missed a sitter, Jadon Sancho and Achraf Hakimi had some nice touches; that's about it. See you in 10 minutes for the second half.
Hertha will be really happy with the first half. Although they haven't threatened to score, they have restricted Dortmund to only one clear chance.
Sancho touches the ball past the last defender Boyata but gets a bit too much on the ball, allowing the keeper Jarstein to come out and claim.
The substitute Esswein fouls Hakimi just outside the area on the right. Guerreiro hoofs an abysmal free-kick miles over the bar.
Chance for Dortmund! Hakimi's low cross is dummied smartly by Brandt on the edge of the area. The ball runs to Witsel, whose shot is superbly blocked by a Hertha defender.
It's been a good few minutes for Hertha, who have calmed things down after a period of increasingly intense pressure from Dortmund.
Darida shoots straight at Burki from 20 yards. It was a sweet strike but too close to the keeper.
- OffJavairô DilrosunHertha Berlin
- OnAlexander EssweinHertha Berlin
A blow for Hertha: Dilrosun has gone off injured, to be replaced by Alexander Esswein.
Mittelstadt's long, angled pass from the halfway line finds its way through to Lukebakio, whose acrobatic cross-shot from a tight angle is easily saved by Burki.
Dortmund are playing some lovely stuff now.
Akanji plays a crisp pass into Brandt, who turns smartly in the D and drills a rising shot that flashes wide of the right-hand post. Decent effort.
Hazard misses a sitter! Dortmund should be ahead. A cross from the left skimmed off the head of Torunarigha and fell perfectly for Hazard, who controlled the ball and then slashed wide from six yards.
Sancho beats three players on the left. Nothing comes of it but it's another example of his effortless class.
Sancho plays a lovely angled pass to Guerreiro, who wins a corner. Sancho has already played three terrific through balls to the wing-backs Guerreiro and Hakimi.
Darida plays in the overlapping Lukebakio, whose cross is calmly chest-volleyed clear by Can.
It's been a classy start from both sides, with some really good passing and pressing.
After a low-key start to the game, Dortmund are beginning to get into their stride.
Chance for Dortmund! Hakimi plays a slick give-and-go with Sancho, scurries into the area and whips a shot into the side netting from a tight angle. He should probably have gone across goal.
Hertha have made a relaxed start, with lots of possession in the first few minutes.
Sancho is now playing on the right, with Brandt as the false nine. I suppose the front three will interchange throughout the match.
A quiet start, nothing to report. You're welcome!
Jadon Sancho has started as a false nine, with Thorgan Hazard on the left.
- 1st Half
Peep peep! Hertha kick off from right to left.
The players on both sides take a knee around the centre circle before the match.
The players are in the tunnel, ready for business. Five minutes to kick off!
Sancho scored in the return fixture, a 2-1 win for Dortmund at the end of November. That was Hertha's fifth straight league defeat. Since then, their Bundesliga record is really impressive: P17 W7 D7 L3.
All eyes will be on Jadon Sancho, who has had an eventful week. He scored his first hat-trick against Paderborn on Sunday, and yesterday he was fined for having a haircut.
Although their title hopes are over, Dortmund look increasingly secure in second place. A win today would take them four points clear of third-place Leipzig, who were held at home by the bottom club Paderborn.
No surprises in either team. Dortmund are without the suspended Mats Hummels, so Emre Can will play in defence. Erling Haaland is still injured. Hertha are without the lively Brazilian Matheus Cunha, who is recovering from concussion, so Javairo Dilrosun keeps his place on the left wing.
