The Brazilian, who currently plays with Cruzeiro, has cited injury problems to his right ankle as the motivation behind the decision.
"I feel that it is the right moment to finish," the former international said.
"I feel a chronic pain that bothers me a lot now, but I still hope to help Cruzeiro to qualify for the Copa Libertadores."
Elber had an operation on his troubled ankle back in August 2004, and it has caused him trouble ever since. He is a doubt for Sunday's game against Corinthians with again his ankle being the problem.
The striker is best known for his spell at Bayern Munich where he scored 92 goals over a six year period with the club, and he also scored seven times in 15 appearances with Brazil.
Elber's contract with Cruzeiro runs out on the 31st of December.
