"I had several offers." Del Neri told Sport Italia of the move. "But the Italian teams have chosen others, and I knew Porto have had their eye on me for a while."

"For me it's the occasion to coach one of Europe's most important teams and to see if my conception of football can work at a continental level," he added.

Chievo said on their website that Del Neri's assistant Francesco Conti and fitness coach Ugo Mranza would also be moving to Porto.

"Some [Porto] players will leave, other new ones will come because we'll have to play in several competitions [next season]. Our goal will be to remain competitive in Europe."

Asked whether Del Neri would pick with him some of his Chievo players, he answered:

"For the moment nobody will come from Chievo. In the future, we'll see. Our project is to build a competitive team, capable of playing with its own style and winning anywhere."

Del Neri took Chievo up to Serie A for the first time in their history in 2000 and led them to qualification for the UEFA Cup in their debut season in the top flight

Despite the loss of several players from the 'Miracle' side, Chievo finished comfortably in mid-table for the past two seasons.
