You'd like to think that when Lionel Messi watched Cristiano Ronaldo hit a hat-trick against Atletico Madrid last night he thought to himself, 'pfft... I guess I'll just have to put on an even more spectacular show tomorrow'.
The five-time Ballon d'Or winner rocked up to the Camp Nou on Wednesday looking to book Barcelona's place in the Champions League quarter-finals following a drab 0-0 draw in the first leg in Lyon.
It didn't take long for Messi to make an impact.
The 31-year-old put his side ahead with a perfect Panenka penalty within the first 20 minutes of the match.
Lyon tried to force their way back into the tie with a second half goal which made it 2-1, but Messi wasn't having any of it.
In the 78th minute he flew forward and finished off a simply magical solo effort to put the tie beyond Lyon's grasp.
Messi topped off his performance with two late assists to take him to four goal involvements on the night (which pips Cristiano Ronaldo's tally of three last night).
Fans on Twitter were in awe with the all-round performance of the Argentine international.
You don't have to pick one, but as long as Messi and Ronaldo keep trying to battle for top spot, we're going to see some sensational performances for years to come.
