Simeone says 'best in world' Ronaldo was trying to 'show character' in mock celebration
Diego Simeone says Cristiano Ronaldo was "trying to show his character" through his celebration for Juventus in their 3-0 victory over Atletico Madrid that sent them into the Champions League quarter-finals.
The Atletico manager refused to criticise the former Real Madrid forward after his hat-trick overturned a 2-0 first-leg deficit, which led to the Portuguese grabbing his crotch area to mimic Simeone’s celebration after the opening game.
"He will have seen how I did it at the Wanda Metropolitano and, like me, was trying to show his character," said Simeone.
"Cristiano Ronaldo is the best in the world, he can put in these performances on big nights."
Simeone was fined £17,000 and charged by UEFA for his outburst following the first leg. It remains to be seen if Ronaldo will be punished.
