Five minutes added.

Wijnaldum and Minamino both have chances to slot past Onana, but the Ajax keeper does well to block both attempts. Liverpool should have finished it on the break there.

Tagliafico sends two deliveries into the box, but Fabinho is there on both occasions. Immense.

Ajax are throwing some high balls into the Liverpool box. Traore goes up for one, but it hits his shoulder and rolls through to Adrian. The Merseysiders still aren't certain of the victory here.

Jota leads a counter with a brilliant solo run from the edge of his own area. The ball is worked wide and when the resulting cross comes in, he almost provides the finish, but sees his shot well blocked.

Tagliafico motors down the left and fizzes in a dangerous, bouncing cross that Gomez does well to guide to safety.

Jota charges down Onana in the middle of the Ajax keeper's own half. The ball breaks to the left with an empty goal gaping, but it doesn't fall kindly for the visitors and Ajax are able to mop up.

Schuurs hammers a 35-yard shot wide of target. Adrian happy to see that sort of thing.

Onana gets two firm hands on Minamino's 25-yard drive and parries it to safety.

Sadio Mane of FC Liverpool celebrates after scoring his team's first goal

Henderson takes a seat in front of the referee and applies tape to a white part of his sock that the official says was confusing him with Ajax. Bizarre - but not as bizarre as the own goal that still separates the sides.

STAT: Ajax have only won one of their previous six games against English opponents in European competition (D2 L3).

Mane having ice applied to his right leg. Hopefully that's nothing but a precaution given Liverpool's recent injury woes.

Surely the sight of Liverpool's lauded triumvirate will give Ajax a major lift for the final half an hour?

Firmino somehow fails to make firm contact with his header after a wonderful left-wing cross from Robertson.

CLOSE! Onana comes flying off his line to try and block a left-wing corner. Fabinho meets it, but the keeper's presence does just enough to put him off.

Liverpool are readying Minamino.

Adrian has had a couple of nervy moments, but on the whole he's done some important work so far tonight. Liverpool will hope he can see it through the rest of the match. Many detractors are ready to jump on him for errors and a good display here would give him much-needed confidence.

Elsewhere in this group, Atalanta lead 3-0.

Firmino outfoxes Schuurs with a nutmeg near the left byline. He falls under some contact from the Ajax defender, but the referee feels there wasn't enough in it.

Davy Klaassen lets fly with a thunderous effort from the edge of the box, but sees it crash back off the inside of the post and fly to safety. So unlucky!

Promes drifts a testing cross into the box from the left, but Adrian comes off his line and punches to safety amidst a cluster of bodies in front of him.

WHAT A SAVE! Adrian stays big to deny Promes with a strong boot from close range after Ajax had opened the visitors up far too easily.

Magnificent defending by Blind as he just about gets a toe to Firmino's flick and deny Salah a clear run at goal inside the area.

DID YOU KNOW? Firmino is making his 50th European appearance for Liverpool. The Brazilian has been directly involved in 26 goals in 33 CL matches for Liverpool (15 goals and 11 assists).

Robertson gets to the left byline and drills in a low cross that Onana anticipates and gathers very efficiently.

Gravenberch drags a first-time drive well wide from the edge of the box after a neat move down the Ajax left.

Liverpool's defence creaks after a Gomez clearance lands straight at the feet of Tagliafico. Neres almost sneaks in-behind, but Adrian does enough to force him wide and the eventual cross is hacked away by Gomez.

Liverpool FC goalkeeper Adrian

Martínez arrives late at the far post to meet Tadic's deep cross from the right, but his header is well gathered by Adrian.

STAT: Liverpool have lost their last two games in the Champions League (both against Atletico Madrid last season). The Reds have not suffered three straight defeats in the competition since October-November 2014, under Brendan Rodgers.

Liverpool break at speed, but Mane sees his attempt well blocked.

Promes and Tadic threaten the heart of the Liverpool defence, but Fabinho steps in and deals with the situation. Superb from the Brazilian.

Play resumes with Liverpool on the attack against 10 men - for the moment.

Kudus is down for Ajax. The physio is repeatedly stretching out his right leg. He gets to his feet and gingerly walks to the sideline.

Liverpool with lots of early pressing. Ajax are finding it difficult to develop anything beyond their own half. No opportunities for either side as of yet.

KICK OFF! Liverpool get this Group D opener underway.

Can Salah move up above Ian Rush on Liverpool’s list of leading Euro scorers? The Egyptian is tied with the Welsh legend in third place on 20 goals and has his eyes on Michael Owen in second spot with 22. He’s still got some way to go to catch Steven Gerrard at the top on 41 though.

Mohamed Salah of Liverpool celebrates after scoring the opening goal during the UEFA Champions League Final between Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool at Estadio Wanda Metropolitano on June 01, 2019 in Madrid, Spain.

Lassina Traore drops to the bench for Ajax tonight. That’s the one change from the 5-1 weekend success over Herenveen. Lisandro Martinez comes in to the defence with Daley Blind shuffling forward into the midfield.

TALISMANIC TADIC: The Ajax captain has had a direct hand in 13 goals in 18 outings in the Champions League (six goals and seven assists). That’s the most of any player for the Dutch outfit since the start of the 2018-19 season.

Dusan Tadic lors du match de Ligue des champions entre l'Ajax et Lille, le 17 septembre 2019 à Amsterdam.

Dusan Tadic on the 2019 CL final and how he feels Ajax would have given Liverpool a better game had they not lost in stoppage time to Spurs in the last four: "It would have been nice to play against [Liverpool] in the final," Tadic said. "It is difficult to play against them (but) a larger chance than Tottenham for sure. I played against Liverpool too often, it was always difficult. They put on a lot of pressure with fast football, they are a big team but it will be a great game to play."

Dusan Tadic of Ajax shoots during the UEFA Champions League Semi Final second leg match between Ajax and Tottenham Hotspur at the Johan Cruyff Arena on May 08, 2019 in Amsterdam, Netherlands

Gini Wijnaldum on Liverpool’s Group D opponents: “It's a difficult one, in my opinion. I know [Ajax] very well; it’s a good team, a good football-playing team – and it’s the same for the other two teams. In the Champions League everything can happen, I think we’ve shown in the years before that the away games have been quite tough for us but we’ve still managed to go to the other rounds. We are experienced with that and we know what we can expect."

Mason Mount of Chelsea is challenged by Georginio Wijnaldum

Erik ten Hag, Ajax coach: “Are we relieved that Virgil van Dijk is out? At the end of the day, it is about who is still playing. A different Liverpool? No, their principles are hammered in and they can easily switch with like for like: quality Man A can come in for Man B. The whole team won't change because of Van Dijk.”

Erik ten Hag und Ajax Amsterdam starteten gut in die Saison 2019/20. Doch zuletzt lief es nicht mehr so rund

Liverpool make four changes from the 2-2 draw at Everton. Van Dijk and Joel Matip are out injured, so Joe Gomez returns and will be partnered by Fabinho in the centre of defence. Curtis Jones makes a first CL start, with skipper, Jordan Henderson on the bench. James Milner and Gini Wijnaldum also come in.

Liverpool's Curtis Jones scores the fourth goal
