Kroos lines up a free kick on the right, and it's headed out to Asensio. He catches the volley well, but it swerves into the 'keeper rather than away from him.
Stindl is through into the box and he whistles a shot across goal and just an inch or side wide of the far post.
Plea through on goal, holding off his marker, slides a shot at the corner but Courtois stands up to block his effort and away from goal.

Kroos' cross is chested down and swiftly booted away.

Plea boshes into Ramos and Ramos' ribs as the two challenge for a high ball, conceding a free kick.
Asensio the latest player to have a pop from distance, this time it flies miles over.
Sommer leaps to his left to palm away Kroos' well-struck curling effort from distance. From the corner, Benzema gets a head to the cross but it's saved by the 'keeper again.
Real Madrid have had two-thirds of possession so far.

Asensio beats three men with pace and control, finds Benzema, who lays it forward to Vinicius, and his shot is put wide for a corner.
Thuram's cut back for Plea almost bobbles through to the forward, but it is swiftly hoofed clear.
Benzema tees up Casemiro outside the box, and his low shot is deflected wide for a corner on the left.
Mendy is under pressure, tries to trick his way out of trouble but is quickly tripped and wins a foul.
Vazquez dinks a ball over the top for Benzema. He chests the ball down carefully, and swings his boot to send a shot flying wide of the near top corner.
Kroos is the latest Real player to concede a foul to break up Gladbach's rhythm.
Vazquez is penalised for a foul in midfield as he looked to press.
Hofmann scoops a cross into the path of Thuram in the box, but Courtois runs out to claim.
Varane slides back to divert a cross out for a throw after almost knocking it behind for a corner with his thigh.
A fairly even start to the game so far, though Real slightly brighter so far.
Casmiro has an effort from outside the box, but has no luck.
Some smart 'keeping by Courtois on the edge of the box sets up a quick passing move from the away side, but nothing comes of it yet.

The big news for Real Madrid tonight is that Eden Hazard is fit - but only fit enough to get on the bench. Luka Modric joins him, but otherwise this is pretty much their strongest XI. Gareth Bale is completely out of the squad, but that's probably because he now plays for Spurs.
