22:00

Manchester United are out of the Champions League on a disastrous night for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side. The late comeback gave them hope of an unlikely and frankly undeserved draw that would have saved them in this competition, but Leipzig were the better team on the night and deservedly progress to the knockout stages. United will drop into the Europa League.

  • End of 2nd Half
94'

The whistle goes! Manchester United are out of the Champions League.

90'

There will be four minutes of added time. Four minutes for United to find a goal to save their Champions League campaign.

89'

The clock is ticking down and Leipzing are taking as much time out of this as they possibly can. United need one more goal...

GOOOAAALLL!!! Fernandes converts from the spot with his trademark stop-start finish and it's 3-1. Surely United can't do it from here!?

79'

PENALTY! Greenwood goes down in the box and the referee points to the spot. That looks extremely soft, but it's a lifeline for United...

74'

You have to tip your hat to the way Leipzig have played tonight. Nagelsmann has set them up in a way that has made United look a bit silly at times, with Leipzig overloading midfield for much of the first half and repeatedly finding additional numbers in the attacking third. The stats at the end of the match will likely show United with more possession and more attempts on goal, but in truth Leipzig are fully deserving of their lead, and it could be even bigger had they taken a few more of the golden chances in the first half.

73'

Fernandes spears in a shot that the keeper tips over the bar. It's a smart save, but one that he should be making.

72'

Greenwood stings the palms of the keeper as United throw bodies forward, but they're going to need something special to rescue this campaign now.

70'

That was a disaster of a goal from a United point of view. A cross into the box took a deflection and nobody responded in the United defence, leaving Kluivert completely unmarked to drift onto the end of it. The finish was deft, clipped over the onrushing De Gea, but United's players won't enjoy watching that back in the post-mortem.

GOOOAAALLL!!! Justin Kluivert clips a finish over David de Gea to put Leipzig 3-0 up and that could be all she wrote.

66'

OFF THE BAR! Fernandes curls an absolute peach of a free-kick over the wall, but it cannons back off the bar. What an effort!

64'

Pogba and Fernandes link up nicely in midfield and you sense that this game could be a bit of a siege now. United will be wary of Leipzig on the break, but there's so much attacking firepower on the pitch for the visitors that you have to think they'll create enough chances for a comeback. Whether they can take them is another matter.

United make a double change, with Paul Pogba and Brandon Williams coming on.

60'

The delay in Paris means that we won't be completely sure about the make-up of this group for a long while after full-time. But United know that they need a draw to go through, it's simple from United's point of view.

58'

I promised a fashion update earlier, but the cold weather means that Nagelsmann has put his snazzy suit collection away for the winter it seems. The Leipzig manager is instead in a fetching green jacket with a black hoody underneath - stylish but understated (maybe a little young for most his age, but he can just about pull it off).

54'

Big chance! A teasing cross arcs across the face of the Leipzig goal, but it's too high for McTominay and Maguire can't quite reach it at the back post. The centre-back was unmarked, but seemed to be a little slow to react, almost like it took him by surprise that the ball reached him.

53'

United have had a string of corners in the opening stages of the second half, but a Leipzig head has met every single one.

49'

It's already looking livelier from United since the change, with more options around the ball. Fernandes seems to have been found more in four minutes than he was in the entire opening 45, and there might just be a glimmer of hope of a comeback... something that didn't feel like it was coming in the first half.

  • Donny van de Beek
OffAlex TellesManchester UnitedVan de Beek is on for Alex Telles, meaning a return to a four at the back and an extra player in central midfield for United. That feels like a very sensible tactical switch given the first-half problems.

  • 2nd Half
46'

We're back underway at the Red Bull Arena and United have made a significant change.

Over in Paris there has been an unprecedented incident in football's fight against racism, with both teams leaving the pitch over a report of racist language from the fourth official towards Istanbul assistant Pierre Webo. The match is set to resume at 21:00 after a lengthy delay, but there will be a lot more fall-out from this. Keep an eye on the Eurosport website for the full story.

  • End of 1st Half
45'

That's the end of a nightmare half for United, who likely need two goals to avoid crashing out of the Champions League.

45'

Sabitzer volleys over the bar from distance as the fourth official raises the board to show two added minutes.

44'

Solskjaer gets a stern talking to from the ref after his protests about that booking. It's the most animated we've seen Ole in this match, but he's got his work cut out if he wants to rescue this campaign.

  • Luke Shaw
Yellow cardLuke ShawManchester United"I got the ball" bawls an incredulous Luke Shaw as a Leipzig counter-attack comes to an abrupt halt, but the referee says otherwise. Replays suggest that Shaw had a bit of a point there.

"I got the ball" bawls an incredulous Luke Shaw as a Leipzig counter-attack comes to an abrupt halt, but the referee says otherwise. Replays suggest that Shaw had a bit of a point there.

40'

Angelino finds himself in acres of space again on the left, but his cross can't quite find a team-mate and McTominay mops up. Wan-Bissaka desperately needs some help out on the right, where Leipzig are doubling up on him time and again.

38'

It's a first glimmer of a chance for Rashford, but the ball gets stuck underneath his feet a little as he looks to burst in behind, and there were three defenders on him in any case so it would have taken something special.

37'

Maguire is convinced there's a handball as his thumping header from a corner is blocked, but the referee had already blown for a foul (what that foul was is less clear...).

35'

Sabitzer halts a United move with a cynical foul in midfield. He earns himself a place in the referee's book.

34'

What now from Solskjaer? The United boss surely has to switch things up tactically as his team are getting ripped apart at the back and have offered very little of note going forward. Will he wait until halftime... or will the damage already be done by then?

31'

United are seeing plenty of the ball now, but that's two huge chances in the last 10 minutes for Leipzig to stretch their advantage and you feel like there are more opportunities coming.

28'

VAR saves United as a goal is chalked off for offside. A looping header comes back off the post and across the face of the goal to be tapped home by Orban, but he was offside when the initial header came in.

28'

Another huge chance goes begging for Leipzig. Forsberg just fractionally overhits his final pass on the counter-attack, but that should have been three.

25'

United are starting to get a foothold in the game at least, but you sense that may be because Leipzig are happy for them to have the ball in central areas. At 2-0 up this early it suits the hosts to sit a bit deeper and play on the break a bit more... especially if Angelino keeps finding acres of space down that left flank.

22'

A United free-kick hammers into the wall and Leipzig immediately look to spring a counter, unsuccessfully on this occasion. As it stands United are dropping out of the Champions League unless they get a grip on things.

Here's a look at the opening goal... which gets even messier with every watch from a United perspective.

17'

United are being overrun in midfield, with the back three left with nobody to pick up and Forsberg dropping into midfield to add an extra number to that area. It's chaotic from the visitors and they need to work out how to fix it and sharpish!

14'

It should be 3-0, the ball drops to Forsberg on the penalty spot but he can't pick out the finish that the chance merited. This is shambolic from United.

  • Amadou Haidara
GoalAmadou HaidaraRB LeipzigGOOOAAALLL!!! Things go from bad to worse for United as they concede another early on in this match. Again it’s Angelino who finds the space, but this time he whips in a deep cross and it’s finished beautifully on the volley by Haidara.

8'

The first bright spark on the night comes from Mason Greenwood, who stings the palms of the keeper with a quickly-taken shot from the edge of the box. That’s some encouragement at least after an extremely shaky start.

7'

Angelino almost gets in again down the Leipzig left, just as he did for the goal. This time his shot across the body of the keeper is a comfortable save for De Gea, but it’s worrying how easily the Leipzig man is finding space.

GOOOAAALLL!!! It's a nightmare start for United as Angelino puts the hosts ahead with just two minutes on the clock.

The hosts are of course without their star centre-back Upamecano, a defender who has been attracting plenty of interest in the transfer market of late.

  • 1st Half
1'

Leipzig get the game underway in an empty Red Bull Arena. The hosts are in their usual white with red shorts, United are in their dark blue and black away strip.

19:59

Here we go… 90 minutes stand between United and the knockout stages of the Champions League.

19:55

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer says the decision to leave Paul Pogba on the bench has nothing whatsoever to do with the comments made by the player’s agent this week about Pogba having no future at the club. Solskjaer says it was always his intention to switch to Matic and McTominay as the midfield two for this match.

19:40

PSG, the other team on nine points in this group, are at home this evening against Basaksehir.

19:35

The equation for United is pretty simple tonight. If they win the group they will likely top the group barring a ridiculous scoreline in PSG’s game. They only have to draw to progress to the knockout stages. Defeat will see them eliminated.

19:25

Team News: Nagelsmann picks what he describes as his strongest available line-up… but the big question-mark of the pre-game build-up is what the Leipzig manager will wearing. His outfits have caused quite the stir in this tournament in 2020. More on that later…

19:20

Team News: United leave Paul Pogba on the bench and switch to a back three, with Luke Shaw returning to the side after injury.

19:15

Good evening and welcome to coverage of this evening’s crunch game at the Red Bull Arena. It all comes down to tonight in Group H, with Manchester United, tonight’s opponents RB Leipizg, and Paris Saint-Germain all level on nine points with 90 minutes left to play.
