Full Time

What an end to the game. You feel for Rennes but what a performer Giroud has been in his career coming off the bench. Frank Lampard will really not want to let him go in the January transfer window.

GOAL! Superb poachers goal from Olivier Giroud. Werner should have scored after Ziyech drew the defenders and put him through on goal but his tame effort was saved by Gomis' feet, only for the ball to fly in the air enabling the French centre forward to power the rebound home.

Ziyech put in fine free kick from the right flank which finds Chilwell on the back post but he can only meet it with a weak header which is easily gathered.

GOAL FOR RENNES! Guirassy fires a header home from Bourigeard's corner.

Camavinga is replaced by Grenier. Not his best game tonight but his time will come.

Ziyech and Havertz come on Hudson-Odoi and Kovacic.

Mendy with a superb stop after Nyamsi met a corner with a firm header and just as impressively scooped the rebound with a foot into his arms.

Chelsea lost the ball in their own half and Rennes broke quickly, with Castillo firing a ball across the penalty area which Guirassy got under control and looked to fire cleverly into the near post with the outside of his boot but Mendy pushed wide.

Kante replaces Mount and Giroud comes on for Abraham. Two French internationals getting a run out on home soil.

Abraham goes down under a challenge from Nyamsi in the box but a foul is given against him. The England striker had a bit of a hold of the defenders shirt which seems to be the reason.

Rea Siliki comes off for Del Castillo.

Krasnadar have equalised against Sevilla, so Chelsea will have to hold on to secure qualification tonight.

Abraham really does put a shift in, on two occasions making crucial blocks in his own box as Rennes have consecutive corners.

Traore isn't far away there, a good left-footed effort aimed inside the near post but Thiago Silva with his hands behind his back puts his torso in the way and averts danger.

Five hours since Rennes have scored a goal. For all their good play they could really do with a finisher.

DISALLOWED GOAL! Azpilicueta puts in a cross to the back post that Werner heads home but he was just offside.

Rennes get the second half underway...

Half Time

Chelsea dominated early but Rennes showed a lot of quality in the closing stages and can consider themselves unlucky to be behind.

Bourigeaud takes the free kick but Azpilicueta jumps in the wall and deflects it wide of the goal.

Guirassy is brought down on the edge of the D by Thiago Silva. A last chance before the break to get a deserved equaliser.

Rennes will be disappointed if they do not get a goal before half time out of this fine period of pressure.

Fine header from skipper Da Silva from a Rennes corner but it is straight at Mendy who parries away.

A poor error passing inside from Chilwell puts Guirassy free in the penalty area but he opts to pass square and Thiago Silva clears.

Doku is giving Chilwell a real test down the right wing. He gets his side deep into Chelsea territory and eventually it falls to Guirassy who shoots low to Mendy's left but he gets down quickly to make a comfortable save.

Rennes certainly looking worthy opponents. Camavinga, the youngest French international for 106 years, made space for himself 20 yards from goal but his effort didn't trouble the Chelsea keeper.

A great chance for Lea Siliki but he blazes over. Bourigead has a shot blocked by Zouma and it falls to the Rennes left winger but he send his effort well over the bar.

Mount is denied by a fine save from Gomis. Chilwell was on the by-line and looked to hit the ball across the six-yard box but as the goalkeeper dived to gather, the ball was blocked back to Chilwell leaving the keeper out of position. But after the ball was pulled back to Mount he dived back to claw the ball away from his near post.

Some good play from Rennes and Truffert gets to the by-line but Hudson-Odoi gets back to put the ball out for a corner.

GOAL! A superb fifty-yard ball from Mason Mount which perfectly puts the ball in front of Hudson-Odoi and he races on and calmy places it past the Rennes keeper.

Just a reminder, if Sevilla hold on to their victory Chelsea will be through to the next round with a draw here.

What a bold call this was from Joe Cole in the pre-match. Don't like to throw the genius tag about this loosely. No sign of Einstein-level play from the Chelsea number 19 so far.

A corner eventually reaches Lea Siliki but he loses control and the ball gets comfortably back to former Rennes stopper Edouard Mendy.

Having survived the initial onslaught, Rennes have now grown into the game and are enjoying possession in the Chelsea half.

Sevilla already one-up in Russia, with Ivan Rakitic on the scoresheet.

Some respite for Rennes as Lea Siliki is fouled by Kovacic - his yelp answered by the referee who is sporting very fetching pink socks.

Rennes struggling to get out of their half. It really looks a matter of time until they concede.

What a miss! A perfect low cross from the right flank from Hudson-Odoi but Werner from the six-yard box spoons the ball over the bar.

Werner played a superb ball over the defence for Chilwell who almost was able to squeeze a cross over to Abraham.

Chelsea get us underway...

The bookmakers expect Chelsea to do the job tonight, putting them at 4/5 to win which still looks backable to be honest.

Sevilla in Krasnadar at the same time tonight, in the reverse fixture they pulled back a two-goal deficit to win in perhaps the most dramatic Champions League match so far this season.

Lampard paid tribute to the influence Thiago Silva has had in a short space of time in his pre-game press conference. The Braziian returns to the starting eleven along with Callum Hudson-Odoi, Jorginho and Reece James, none of whom started in the 2-0 win over Newcastle

Last time out at the Bridge it was a comfortable 3-0 win for Chelsea, with Tammy Abraham on the scoresheet and Timo Werner netting two penalties - the second as Chelsea fan Jeremy Vine suggests, was a wee bit harsh.

Chelsea come into the game top of Group E and a win against the basement dwellers will, barring a Krasnodar win over Sevilla, give them the luxury of qualifying for the second round after four games.

The French side is also out. And lining up in an unusual 6-5 formation by the looks...

This is how the Blues will line-up....
