Unsurprisingly there has been plenty of lively reaction to this redraw on Twitter...

13:05 - The full story

UEFA have declared the draw for the Champions League last-16 'null and void' and there will be a redraw at 2PM UK time following an error which meant Manchester United were left out of part of the process.
There was initial confusion with the original draw when United were pulled out to face Villarreal - however, this was not possible given the two teams had faced each other in the group stage.
United's rivals City were then drawn out to face the Spaniards, however, the ball with United's name was not included as a potential opponent for Atletico Madrid, who instead drew Bayern Munich.
Liverpool will also put in the same pot to potentially face Atletico despite them playing each other in the group stages.

12:55 - Why the redraw?

Earlier on today UEFA's Champions League final ambassador Andrey Arshavin drew Manchester United out of the pot to face Villarreal.
The two sides could not face each other as they were in the same group, meaning Arshavin had to have a second go at it. The second time around Arshavin pulled out Manchester City and the draw continued.
However, amid the confusion United were not put in the bowl to draw Atletico Madrid despite there being no permutations preventing them.
Atletico, who were initially drawn Bayern Munich, have now complained to UEFA about this error and the draw will be done all over again.
Here is what Atletico tweeted before UEFA's confirmation of a redraw...

11:45 - Nagelsmann reacts to Bayern drawing Atletico

Every round of 16 tie is a good one but Atletico Madrid vs Bayern Munich should certainly be one of the standout matches. Bayern boss Julian Nagelsmann has had his say.

11:35 - Arshavin's gaffe won't be forgotten

Because of a software issue, the former Arsenal and Zenit forward drew Villarreal to face Manchester United who were in the same group.
Arshavin had a second go and drew Villarreal against Manchester City.

11:32 - Man City's record against Villarreal

Pep Guardiola will likely be pleased with getting the Europa League champions at the round of 16 stage.

11:27 - A blockbuster tie

It's the tie of the round.
Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo will meet in the Champions League knockout stages for the first time since the 2010/11 semi-final when Barcelona beat Real Madrid 3-1 on aggregate and it could be the last time the two greats face each other.
It will also be fascinating to see Mauricio Pochettino come up against the club he has been linked to take charge of from the beginning of next season.

11:23 - The last 16 draw

  • Benfica v Real Madrid
  • Villarreal v Manchester City
  • Atletico Madrid v Bayern Munich
  • Salzburg v Liverpool
  • Inter Milan v Ajax
  • Sporting Lisbon v Juventus
  • Chelsea v Lille
  • PSG v Manchester United

11:22 - When will the last-16 matches take place?

  • First legs: February 15-16 and February 22-23
  • Second legs: March 8-9 and March 15-16

11:21 - PSG v Manchester United

What a game this will be! Manchester United will play PSG! It's Messi v Ronaldo!

11:20 - Chelsea v Lille

It's a great game if you are Joe Cole in particular. The Champions League holders Chelsea will play Ligue 1 side Lille.

11:19 - Sporting Lisbon v Juventus

The Portuguese champions Sporting Lisbon will play Juventus with the first leg in Lisbon.

11:19 - Inter Milan v Ajax

Inter Milan will face Ajax who were the first Dutch club to win all matches in the group stage.

11:18 - Salzburg v Liverpool

Salzburg will take on Liverpool. Liverpool won all of their group stage matches.

11:17 - Atletico Madrid v Bayern Munich

This should be tasty. Atletico Madrid take on six-time Champions League winners Bayern Munich who are unbeaten in their 28 last group stage matches.

11:15 - Villarreal v Manchester City

After Arshavin accidentally draws Villarreal against Manchester United who were in the same group, they will actually play last season's finalist Manchester City.

11:14 - Benfica v Real Madrid

Benfica, who had four clean sheets in the group stages, will take on Carlo Ancelotti's Real Madrid.

11:13 - Off we go!

With the technicalities out of the way, we are underway!

11:10 - Here is Arshavin

The man responsible for pulling the balls out today is former Arsenal and Zenit Saint Petersburg forward Andrei Arshavin who is UEFA's ambassador for the 2022 final.
He has been impressed most by Ajax in the Champions League this season and his greatest personal memory of the tournament was scoring against Barcelona at the Emirates.

11:05 - Away goals change

There is a change to the rules this season. The away goals rule has gone. If ties are level after 180 minutes it's going to go to extra-time and penalties regardless of away goals.

‘Our goal is to win Champions League not reach last 16’ - Ancelotti

No Barcelona?

Barcelona exited the Champions League group stage for the first time in 21 years with a 3-0 defeat at Bayern Munich.
It is the first time since the 2003-04 season, when Barcelona only qualified for the UEFA Cup, that the club will not compete in the knockout rounds of the Champions League.
Xavi replaced Ronald Koeman in November but has thus far struggled to arrest Barcelona's struggles, and the former midfielder conceded that he will have to "change a lot" after a "hammer blow" of a defeat.

'Today a new phase must begin' - Xavi after Barcelona's Champions League exit

"Bayern dominated us," Xavi said. "We always want to dominate but it was the opposite here. We must demand more. We're Barca. This must be a point of inflection to change the dynamic and many more things.
"This is the Champions League, but this is also our reality. It's the situation we're in.
"I'm angry. This is the reality and it p***** me off. We have to tackle it face on. There's nothing else for it."
