Watford's Darius Henderson has decided against joining Preston after the clubs agreed a fee for the striker.
Henderson, 25, was also a target for a third Championship club, Sheffield Wednesday - but it seems that he will now stay at Vicarage Road.
"We're disappointed, but I hope to use the money in other areas," North End manager Paul Simpson said of the rejection.
"The chairman has been fantastic in backing us financially, and what we need to do is make sure we spend that money wisely."
Henderson signed for the Hornets from Gillingham two years ago and is a consistent goal-scorer in the lower leagues, but managed only three goals in 35 appearances in the Premiership last season.
