Caretaker boss Symons boosted his chances of securing the top job at Craven Cottage as his side beat Doncaster 2-1 in the Capital Cup for only their second win of the season.
Chairman Shahid Khan has vowed to take his time to find the right man to replace Felix Magath following his sacking last week, with Chris Hughton, Steve Clarke and Tim Sherwood among the names being touted.
But Symons is also a contender and club director Mark Lamping was in the stands to watch goals from Bryan Ruiz and Dan Burn sink League One Rovers.
"I had a really good chat with the owners and Mark Lamping is here, and it was really positive and very upbeat. It was beneficial for both parties," said Symons.
"It's still the same situation. There will be a proper and thorough search for the right manager and I think that's the right thing to do.
"I want the right person to take this club forward - and my challenge now is to make sure that person is me.
"There's no time frame at the moment and I know from speaking to Mark that they're not going to rush and they're going to take their time."
