Stoke City midfielder James McClean has revealed the sectarian abuse he received in a birthday card.
McClean, who turned 30 on April 22, received a card containing abuse regarding his nationality on all four pages.
He has been targeted for abuse in the past for his pro-Irish republican views and for refusing to wear a Remembrance Day poppy on his shirt.
The midfielder, who has previously pleaded with the Football Association to do more to prevent such abuse, posted images of the card on Twitter with the caption “No words”.
The sender edited the front of the card so that, under "Happy Birthday", it read "and die on April 22". Also on the front is an insult, calling him a “fenian sub-human b*****d”.
The card also contains references to Hitler and Bloody Sunday.
"What this country needs is somebody called Hitler, he would have sorted the IRA in a month," it says on the inside.
