Defender O'Connell has joined Latics until January from Scottish champions Celtic.
Another recent signing, former Tottenham winger Mark Yeates, is pushing for his first league start but new striker Simonas Stankevicius is on international duty with Lithuania Under-21s.
Defender Jonathan Burn could return after a knock but midfielder Carl Winchester faces a fortnight out after suffering an injury in training. Captain Liam Kelly (knee) and striker Jake Cassidy (ankle and leg) are long-term absentees.
Striker Devante Cole could be pushing for a place in the Bradford starting line-up, and his full debut, after his winning goal from the bench against Port Vale last weekend.
Reece Burke is available to feature before the on-loan West Ham centre-half links up with the England Under-20 squad.
Chris Routis and Tony McMahon both resumed training this week and the French defender comes back into the reckoning after recovering from a hamstring injury.
However, McMahon has lost a fair amount of weight after his recent virus and it is unlikely he will be ready to return at the weekend.
