Gareth Southgate’s England followed their win against Italy on Thursday with a 2-0 win against Ukraine to make it two wins from two in Group C in Euro 2024 qualifying. Bukayo Saka had a hand in both goals – setting up the first for Harry Kane, before scoring the second just minutes later. Both goals came before the interval and the Three Lions’ lead was rarely threatened in the second-half.

Casemiro praise for Ancelotti, plays down Brazil coach rumours

Goals from Harry Kane and Bukayo Saka gave England a 2-0 victory over Ukraine which puts them in command of their qualification group for Euro 2024.
A humdrum game was brought to life on 37 minutes when Saka was allowed time to pick a cross and duly found Kane at the back post for the England skipper to score his 55th international goal.
Kane, who became England's outright leading goalscorer last time out against Italy, had been recognised with a golden boot before kick-off.
The provider turned scorer within three minutes as Saka outmanoeuvred his marker, then, still outside the penalty area, unleashed a sumptuous curling shot which nestled in the top corner.
England were improved in the second-half but could not find a third goal, with Jude Bellingham and James Maddison, who was making a first Three Lions start, both squandering opportunities.
Ivan Toney was introduced as a late substitute for his England debut.
England are top of Group C with six points from two games, while Ukraine are pointless having played just one.

TALKING POINT - Maddison looks the part on first England start

Given the clamour for Maddison to be in England's World Cup squad, his first senior international start felt a little anticlimactic. Yet here we were, with Phil Foden in hospital and Maddison lining up on the left wing with licence to come inside. The Leicester City man produced an unspectacular but positive performance, offering good intent when on the ball and showing his undoubted quality in a few fleeting moments - albeit his shooting radar was slightly off. Maddison has plenty of competition for a place in the side, but he can hope this has reduced any fears Gareth Southgate may have about depending on him in the future. Maddison did not look out of place.

PLAYER OF THE MATCH - Bukayo Saka (England)

Saka made the first goal before scoring the excellent second. The Arsenal youngster carried himself with aplomb on the England right, where Ukrainian defenders were afraid to get tight for fear of being turned and as a result gave the winger too much time to do as he chose. A brilliant player in brilliant form, and one that Ukraine could not handle.

MATCH HIGHLIGHTS

KANE GIVES ENGLAND LEAD 37' - Saka is given time on the ball, looks up and crosses for Kane who finishes at the back post.
SAKA STUNNER 40' - Saka turns his marker 25 yards from goal and curls a lovely strike into the top corner.
BLUSHES FOR BELLINGHAM 58' - Walker and Saka combine, with the latter crossing low for Bellingham - six yards out - but the otherwise-brilliant Bellingham fails to make proper contact.
TONEY ON FOR ENGLAND DEBUT 81' - Toney comes on in place of Kane, England's all-time leading scroer. Not a bad player to replace.
GALLAGHER DENIED 87' - Grealish and Chilwell combine on in the left and Chilwell prods a cross in the direction of Gallagher, whose shot is beaten away by Trubin.
