FT: Manchester United 3-0 St Etienne. Job done by United. It wasn't easy in the first half, as The Greens pressed, but a hat-trick from Ibrahimovic puts the Premier League side in command in this tie. Paul won the battle of the Pogba brothers tonight, with the United man putting in a stellar showing. Thanks for joining is. Full report and reaction to follow on site. Goodbye.

Roux is just offside as he goes up for a header. Bailly had flung a foot high in his direction.

Lingard is played in down the left, but his cross is cut out. Lingard had plenty of options to his right.

Game is petering out now, with St Etienne very much beaten. United want more. Four minutes of added time...

GOAL! Manchester United 3-0 St Etienne. Game over. Ibrahimovic gets up to take it himself, and fires into the bottom corner to complete his hat-trick. The penalty award was soft to say the least.

PENALTY TO UNITED! Ibrahimovic takes a tumble under challenge from Kevin Theophile-Catherine.

Nothing becomes of it. Martial leaves the pitch to rapturous applause, to be replaced by Ashley Young.

Martial is punished for handball in the wall. Free-kick, right on the edge of the box.

Clumsy from Bailly on Veretout, conceding a free-kick in a dangerous position.

Ibrahimovic shows great feet to work space for the low cross, but it is cleared.

That is the end of the game for one Pogba brother, as Florentin is replaced by Robert Beric.

CHANCE! Nearly a third for United! Rashford sets up Lingard, running onto the ball from the edge of the box, but his low finish flashes past the post.

All about the run from Rashford, as he dashed to the byline, past several markers, pulls it back, Ruffier gets a touch onto a defender, the ball lands at the feet of the Swede, who has the simple task of slotting the ball into an empty net.

GOAL Manchester United 2-0 St Etienne. Him again! Ibrahimovic is on hand to tap home United's second.

CLOSE! As close as the visitors have come. Great pass by Selnaes into the path of fellow substitute Roux, who tries to chip Romero but finds the roof of the net.

Selnaes replaces Pajot as St Etienne shuffle their pack once more.

Pogba (Paul) joins the plethora of names in the referee's notebook, after using his forearm to fend off Veretout.

Change for United now as Marcus Rashford makes his way onto the pitch, taking the place of Mata.

WOODWORK! Pogba (Paul) should score. Blind flights a perfect free-kick into the middle, right onto the head of Pogba, but the record signing heads onto the crossbar from point-blank range.

Martial with a superb run again, drawing the foul. Some of his dynamism tonight has been fantastic.

Perrin again in the wars, this time as Lingard clatters into him. Another yellow card is brandish for the United forward.

Change for the visitors as Nolan Roux replaces Jorginho.

Pajot flies into a challenge on Herrera, gets nowhere near the ball, and is rightly cautioned.

CLOSE! Magnificent from Pogba, as he spins past Vertout, curls at goal, but the ball just flies wide. Really was a superb piece of skill to make space for the shot.

We've not seen much from St Etienne in the second half. Their supporters are still making plenty of noise though...

Lingard and Mata try to link up down the right flank, but the move breaks down once more. United will want a second here.

Has been the standout player this evening...

Herrera slides in, goes well too early, flings a hand back to tap the ball away, and earns himself a yellow card. That means he misses the return leg through suspension.

Valencia, who hasn't scored for almost three years, fires at goal, but it is deflected wide. Good pressure from United at the moment.

SAVE! Superb from Martial as he glides past his man like he isn't there, gets the shot away, but Ruffier does really well to block. A yard either side and that's a goal. Great play from the France International.

Perrin comes back on, as does Smalling. Pogba volleys at goal from distance, but that is always going over.

Both players are on their feet, but look groggy to say the least. Both clubs will have to be very careful here.

Huge collision leaves Smalling and Loic Perrin in a heap on the floor. Both physios rush on to attend their stricken players.

NO GOAL! Great cross from Mata, Ibrahimovic heads home, but the offside flag denies United a second. Correct decision.

First caution of the game. Martial flings an arm back to fend off Jeremy Malcuit, the United man catches him in the face, and is yellow carded for his troubles.

We are back under way here. One change for United, with Jesse Lingard replacing Fellaini.

The scoreline is not a true reflection of the events here in Manchester, it has to be said. The visitors have caused United all sorts of problems, but a mixture of poor finishing and bad luck means they are still behind. Ibrahimovic's fortunate opener still separates these two, but if United's midfield continues to be so flimsy, The Greens could easily find a way back into this.

HT: Manchester United 1-0 St Etienne. No stoppage time here as the referee brings an end to the first half.

Bailly gets a clearance all wrong once more, but he gets away with it as Pajot fires well over the top.

St Etienne are finding it so easy to play through United's midfield of Pogba, Herrera and Fellaini. If it carries on like this, it's only a matter of time before the French side equalise.

Bailly cannot catch Hamouma again as he races clear, but forced slightly wide he blazes his shot over the top.

CHANCE! Another chance for the visitors, who will feel their pressure deserves a goal. Smalling this time throws himself in the way of a shot from Pajot, the ball ricochets back off Pajot and into Romero's grateful grasp.

BLOCK! Bailly again gives the ball away, but he recovers well to block Hamouma's goalbound effort

Pajot tries his luck with a speculative strike from 30 yards but Romero watches it past his near post.

The Frenchman really is causing problems...

With Pogba keen to venture forward, Ander Herrera is a little exposed in midfield.

More sustained pressure from The Greens, but United hold firm. Hamouma remains the dangerman. Bailly does well to marshal his run this time around.

CLOSE! St Etienne are again causing problems. Hamouma is causing Bailly all kinds of problems. He finds a pocket of space and his header falls perfectly into the path of Saivet but the forward's first-time strike from the edge of the area is wide

SAVE! Brilliant from Martial as he carries the ball forwarsd at pace, drives past two men, but is denied by the feet of Ruffier, the ball breaking to Ibrahimovic six yards out, but the Swede can't sort himself out and his finish loops onto the roof of the net.

CHANCE! United go to sleep and Hamouma is in but the forward can't bring the high ball out of the sky and it's out for a goal kick.

Ibrahimovic leaves his foot on Jorginho but escapes a booking. Was more contact than on him for the free-kick that led to the goal...

Better defending from Bailly as he breaks up another St Etienne attack on the byline, before winning a free-kick.

SAVE! That's more like it from Pogba, as he threads a perfect pass through to Mata, who volleys at goal from just inside the box, but Ruffier is equal to it, blocking well before bravely getting up to smother the rebound.

Since the goal, United have struggled to find any rhythm. Pogba is very quiet so deep.

Fellaini tries to bulldoze his way through, but is eventually tackled at the last.

NO PENALTY! St Etienne want a spot-kick as Jorginho hits the deck with Blind tangled up but the referee is not interested. Initially the Czech official did raise his whistle to his lips.

Thought he'd struggle?

70 per cent possession for United so far. They have looked comfortable, but The Greens do look a threat on the counter.

21 for the season, but that is now 15 goals against Les Verts for the Swede. Ibrahimovic waited for the wall to jump, the low drive clipped the heel of Vincent Pajot and trickled over the line, with Ruffier having gone the other way.

GOAL! Manchester United 1-0 St Etienne. It is him again, but it isn't pretty as Ibrahimovic's effort is deflected home.

Ibrahimovic wins a free-kick right on the edge of the box. Some debate as to who is going to take it...

More possession at the back for United, with Chris Smalling and Bailly seeing plenty of the ball. Still no real United threat posed yet.

SAVE! Anthony Martial does well to shift the ball out of his feet, unleashes a fierce strike at goal, but Stephane Ruffier does well to get across and get two strong hands to the ball to palm it wide and away from danger.

Still United have the ball, but they cannot make any inroads. Pogba plays it long for Antonio Valencia, who feeds Mata, in an offside position. Marouane Fellaini does smash the ball home, but the whistle had long gone.

Better from United, as they play the possession game, but very much in their own half.

Paul Pogba lofts a long ball in the direction of Zlatan Ibrahimovic, but he gets far too much on it, and it flies out for a goal-kick.

Really shaky start from United. Mourinho is on the touchline, urging his side to calm down. Great noise from the St Etienne fans.

Terrible start from Eric Bailly as he gives the ball away, the second time playing Sergio Romero into trouble, but the United stopper does well to push Romain Hamouma wide, and the pull back is cut out by Daley Blind.

KICK OFF! Referee Pavel Kravolec of the Czech Republic gets us under way here at Old Trafford. The flares are going off in the away end already!

St Etienne conceded the first goal in four of their six group stage games, but didn't lose once (W2 D2). They kept clean sheets in the other two games (W1 D1). Will they show the same fighting spirit this evening, should they fall behind? We are minutes away from finding out...

Potentially a costly win...

FAVOURITE: Zlatan Ibrahimovic has scored more goals against St Etienne than he has against any other side in his career (14).

FORMIDABLE: United have never lost at home to French opposition in European competition, winning nine and drawing four of their 13 meetings. They've conceded just six goals in these games. Also, United are unbeaten in their last 14 European home games (W11 D3), since a 1-2 defeat against Real Madrid in March 2013.

HEAD-TO-HEAD: The only previous time these sides have met in European competition was in the 1977-78 Cup Winners’ Cup first round – Man Utd won 2-0 in the home leg after a 1-1 draw in France. However, they’ve never previously met at Old Trafford, with the English leg of the tie being played in Plymouth due to crowd trouble during the first leg.

That explains that absence...

Rallying cry...

Mourinho says his side must keep all their options open to get into next season's Champions League. United have already had one Premier League game, an away trip to Manchester City, postponed after they reached the final of the League Cup and their schedule could see further disruption depending on their FA Cup and Europa League progress: "The accumulation of FA Cup and League Cup and the match postponement make it really hard for us," Mourinho said. "If we progress in the competitions we will be in trouble in May. We prefer difficult and progressing to easy and being out of the competition. The plus is it is another opportunity to qualify for the Champions League. We have two doors still open."

There is a familiar name in the St Etienne team as Florentin Pogba, brother of United's Paul, takes his place in the defence. Other English connections include Jordan Veretout, who is on loan from Aston Villa and Henri Saivet is on loan from Newcastle. Otherwise, Christophe Galtier has named the same team that beat Lorient 4-0 on Sunday.

Florentin Pogba playing for St Etienne

As expected, Mourinho has named a strong side, making just two changes from the weekend win over Watford. Marouane Fellaini comes into the midfield for Henrikh Mkhitaryan, while David de Gea is replaced by Sergio Romero in goal. Bastian Schweinsteiger is on the bench.

Marouane Fellaini's contract at Manchester United has been extended

TEAMS - MANCHESTER UNITED: Romero, Bailly, Blind, Valencia, Smalling, Herrera, Fellaini, Pogba, Martial, Mata, Ibrahimovic... Hello and welcome to our LIVE text commentary of Manchester United's Europa League last-32 first leg clash with St Etienne from Old Trafford. The fixtures are starting to pile up for the Premier League giants, with Blackburn to come this weekend in the FA Cup, the return leg of this tie in France next week, before they travel to Wembley for the EFL Cup final. Jose Mourinho will not be taking this encounter lightly, however. A positive result will put the 20-time top flight champions in a strong position to rest players ahead of that final a week on Sunday. The visitors won't be pushovers, though. The French side, who currently sit fifth in Ligue 1, went unbeaten as they qualified top of Europa League Group C. I'm Pete Hall, and I will be bringing you the action, as it happens, live!
