FULL TIME: Dinamo Zagreb 0-2 West Ham

It's a victorious return to European football for West Ham, who comfortably beat Dinamo Zagreb - the biggest test in the group according to UEFA's coefficients. Zagreb offered some promise in spurts but failed to string together a lengthy spell of dominance.

90+1'

Benrahma's been enjoying his cameo. This time he whips in a cross to the far post for Bowen, who can only manage a weak header into the hands of Livakovic.

88'

As you can expect, that plethora of changes has ruined the flow of the game and it seems like the Hammers are just going to see this one out now.

CLOSE!! Ivanusec nearly pulls one back for Zagreb again! He makes his into the box and shoots for the bottom-right corner but it's just wide.

54'

CLOSE!! Ivanusec shoots from range and it takes a wild deflection off Diop that almost helps it find the back of the net! Fabianski's feet are set though and all he can do is nervously watch the ball go wide.

West Ham fans should apply caution to their optimism.

HALF-TIME: Dinamo Zagreb 0-1 West Ham

Not the most exciting half of football in all fairness. Zagreb struggled to get into the game and retain possession, often aiming to get men behind the ball and attack on the counter. Meanwhile, West Ham controlled the game but haven't had too many clear-cut chances, although Fredericks definitely should've put them 2-0 up.

Zagreb grew into the game though and enjoyed a promising last few minutes of that half, so maybe the tide will change after the break!

Petkovic hooks the ball to Ademi, who tries to tee himself up for the spectacular before the ball's cleared as far as Theophile-Catherine, who blasts it miles over.

43'

CLOSE!! It's Vlasic again. He's growing in confidence! The Croatian receives the ball on the edge of the box with his back to goal, swivels past the defender and lashes a shot that's only inches left of the goal.

41'

BLOCKED! Vlasic strikes a rebounded effort with plenty of venom, but it's blocked by the Zagreb defence.

39'

Theophile-Catherine sends a dangerous ball into the box and Ademi's chasing it, but Fabianski and his defenders manage to shepherd it out of play for a goal-kick.

36'

Fornals and Fredericks combine well in the box to tee up a shot for the former, but there's way too many bodies in the box and his effort is blocked.

34'

Fredericks does well to get back and cut out a Zagreb counter-attack with a bold tackle.

  • Manuel Lanzini
Yellow cardManuel LanziniWest Ham UnitedLanzini is deemed to have fouled Petkovic and gets the first card of the game for it, although replays suggest he got the ball fair and square.

30'

Vlasic makes a good run to the byline to latch onto Fornals' pass but he's unable to find Antonio, who's in a more central position in the box.

26'

Couple more corners for West Ham as they search for a second goal, during which Soucek is harshly called for a foul while jumping for a header in the box.

24'

SAVED!! Fredericks receives the ball on the overlap from Antonio and is through on goal, but Livakovic does well to come off his line and narrow the angle, helping him to keep out the low shot.

  • Michail Antonio
GoalMichail AntonioWest Ham UnitedGOAL!!! Theophile-Catherine plays a weak backpass to Livakovic, but Antonio gets there before him, rounds the keeper and finishes into an empty net for his first ever European goal! It was never going to be anyone else, was it?

15'

Dinamo Zagreb have struggled to get hold of possession and West Ham are controlling the game, but the away side could perhaps try to be a bit more dynamic with their passing and movement.

13'

Cresswell threads through Fornals inside the box, but the Spaniard's attempted pass into the middle is cut out.

9'

West Ham have yet another corner. This one's whipped in by Cresswell from the right and headed down by Soucek, but a defender gets to it before Antonio and now West Ham have a fourth corner.

3'

The corner's headed out to Lanzini, who advances towards goal and takes aim. His shot's deflected but much to his bemusement, the referee doesn't notice.

2'

West Ham showing lots of early intent, as Theophile-Catherine clears the ball for the Hammers' second corner of the game.

KICK-OFF: West Ham commence their first ever Europa League group stage game!

West Ham's last Europa League starting line-up is a throwback to say the least!

OLD RIVALS

Interestingly, West Ham fans have been advised by some to not wear shirts bearing the names of either new boy Nikola Vlasic or former striker Davor Suker.

Both players started their careers at Dinamo Zagreb's fierce rivals Hajduk Split.

Wonder if the home fans will be booing the debutant...

ARE THERE FANS AT THE GAME?

As Croatia is on the UK government's travel green list, the presence of away fans was always going to be dependent on UEFA.

Fortunately they've allowed away fans to be at games, albeit at very short notice, but the lack of notice along with covid testing requirements and a strict no drinking policy has made it difficult for West Ham to sell the entirety of their 1,243-strong ticket allocation.

ROAD TO THE GROUP STAGE

After winning Croatia's top division last season, Dinamo Zagreb entered the Champions League in the first qualifying round in which they beat Icelandic side Valur 5-2 on aggregate before subsequent aggregate wins over Omonia Nicosia 3-0 and Legia Warsaw 2-1. They then fell at the final hurdle to Sheriff Tiraspol, meaning they trickled down to UEFA's second-tier competition.

West Ham, on the other hand, make their first European appearance in 5 years thanks to a storming conclusion to the Premier League season that saw them finish 6th. They'll be glad that gave them a direct route to the group stage because in the 16/17 season they were knocked out in qualifying by Romania's Astria Giurgiu for the second year running.

DINAMO ZAGREB TEAM NEWS

Last year's quarter-finalists field a 3-4-1-2 for this opening group game:

Livakovic, Sutalo, Lauritsen, Theophile-Catherine, Ristovski, Ademi, Misic, Franjic, Ivanusec, Petkovic, Orsic

Captain, Arijan Ademi, who has intriguingly featured internationally for both Croatia and North Macedonia, will marshal the midfield.

However, it's the strike duo of Bruno Petkovic and Mislav Orsic who will most likely trouble West Ham. The latter of whom scored and assisted against Spain in the Euro 2020 round of 16 to send the game into extra time.

Meanwhile, starting goalkeeper Dominik Livakovic is currently Croatia's number one too and made UEFA's 20/21 Europa League Squad of the Season alongside Orsic.

Michail Antonio leads the line as per, Pablo Fornals is moved out to the left, Declan Rice and Tomas Soucek occupy their regular spots, as does Aaron Cresswell and Lukas Fabianski.
