Imp-ossible! Lincoln City stun Burnley to become first non-league side in last eight since 1914

Non-league Lincoln City produced another stunning FA Cup upset to beat Burnley 1-0 at Turf Moor and book their place in the quarter-finals.

The National League leaders, conquerors of Ipswich and Brighton and Hove Albion in earlier rounds, stunned a side with one of the best home records in the Premier League to progress to the last eight of the FA Cup for the first time in their history.

The Clarets, who had lost just three of their last 29 competitive home matches before today, failed to kill off Danny Cowley's side when they finally began to exert pressure in the final 15 minutes, with Andre Gray particularly wasteful in front of goal.

And they were made to pay for their profligacy, as defender Sean Raggett headed home from close range after an 89th-minute corner, with goalline technology proving the ball crossed the line before Burnley goalkeeper Tom Heaton pushed the ball clear.

Lincoln are the first non-league side to reach the last eight since 1914.

The standout battle at Turf Moor was the tussle between Burnley midfielder Joey Barton and Lincoln's 6'4” striker Matt Rhead.

Rhead battered Barton all afternoon, using a combination of brute strength and the odd sneaky elbow to exert his dominance. Barton, so often and so easily reduced to white-hot anger when targeted, was lucky to avoid a red card from referee Graham Scott for an elbow on Alan Power in the second half, as the frustration got too much. And he was centre of attention again following a clash in the box with Rhead, where he stepped on the Lincoln player's toes and then slumped to the floor as if poleaxed by an elbow.

Ironically, Barton's yellow card came for something he didn't even do, as referee Graham Scott failed to notice that it was actually Jon Flanagan who pushed Terry Hawkridge to the floor midway through the second half.

Arnold, who netted the winner in the Imps' third-round replay victory over Ipswich, doubles up as the team hairdresser at Sincil Bank, and the 29-year-old arguably scalped former England defender Jon Flanagan down the Burnley left all afternoon with his pace and movement. He was the out ball for every Lincoln attack, and looks a player who could play at far higher level than the National League.

39' – SAVE! Farman blocks Barton's volley from the edge of the area, after Waterfall can only half clear Darikwa's cross from the right.

51' – CHANCE! Gray steers the chance wide at the near post from Barton's free-kick from the left flank.

80' – SAVE! - Farman blocks from Westwood after Gray mishits hs shot on the run from Darikwa's cross.

89' – GOAL! Burnley 0-1 Lincoln City. Raggett heads home Luke Waterfall's header across goal at the far post, but Burnley are furiously arguing that the ball did not cross the line. But the goal has been given, Heaton was behind the line when he clawed clear. Lincoln are on the verge of the quarter-finals!

Lincoln City are the first non-league side in the last 8 of the FA Cup since QPR in 1913/14.

The last non-league side to reach the semi-finals were Swindon in 1911-12.

Lincoln were the fourth team to beat Burnley at home in 17 matches this season. The other three were Swansea, Arsenal and Manchester City.
