Alexis Sanchez equals Chile goalscoring record in Confederations Cup draw with Germany

Alexis Sanchez struck a record-breaking goal as Chile were held to a 1-1 draw by Germany in an entertaining Group B clash at the Kazan Arena.

The Arsenal forward stabbed in the opener on six minutes to notch for the 38th time for La Roja and pass Marcelo Salas as his country's all-time leading scorer.

It was no more than Chile deserved for a vibrant start to the proceedings but they were punished for not making the most of their initial dominance when Lars Stindl finished off a flowing Germany move four minutes before the break.

Juan Antonio Pizzi selected a much more experience side than his counterpart Joachim Low, and he will feel disappointed La Roja couldn't recapture the same attacking verve in the second period.

Germany improved to make it a much more even contest and will be pleased to earn a share of the spoils that means both teams remain in the top two positions on four points apiece, needing just a draw from their final matches to progress to the semi-finals.

Germany meet Cameroon in Sochi on Sunday while Chile face Australia in Moscow with goal difference potentially key to who finishes top of Group B.

Should Mustafi have been sent off? When Sanchez scored the opener, Shkodran Mustafi went through the back of Vidal with a terrible challenge. The Chile players wanted a red card but the referee failed to punish the Arsenal defender who had a shaky game for much of the night. It was a potential leg breaker and would have left Germany playing with 10-men for much of the game.

Arturo Vidal (Chile). A class act wherever he is deployed. Claimed an assist and did some tidy work inside his own area while remaining a threat at the other end of the pitch.
