FULL TIME: Tottenham Hotspur 0 Atletico Madrid 1
It looks like being a second successive loss for Spurs now as Atleti run the ball out of their own half and time is up…
Dangerous cross from Chadli into Miller but he’s surrounded by three striped shirts and Atleti clear.
THREE ADDED MINUTES go onto the clock.
There won’t be too much injury time and it’s Atleti with possession deep in the Spurs half. The Londoners break but it’s nipped in the bud.
Edwards looking lively, going at the Atleti defence but a foul by Son on Moreno concedes possession.
A strong challenge on Miller by Moreno wins Spurs a free kick but they’re running out of time to get this one upfield and create a chance.
Mason unable to prevent another Atleti corner. In it comes and cleared back to Gabi, who crosses again to Godin but it’s headed wide.
FIVE MINUTES REMAINING: Remember, there will be a penalty shootout if Spurs can find something and level up this match.
Spurs win a free kick as Pochettino paces the touchline. For the most part, it’s been an encouraging performance.
Mason hurls himself at Diedhiou’s effort and it deflects over the bar for a corner. Ball clears.
Edwards runs at Atleti and passes to Mason, who’s touch just gets away from him before he’s able to pull the trigger.
TEN MINUTES REMAINING: still plenty of time for Spurs but with Lamela, Janssen and Eriksen off, it will be tough.
Attendance 42,107. More in tonight than in for the Juventus game.
Great work by Torres and he is then brought down by Mason after beating a couple of players. Skill appreciated by the crowd.
Dom Ball also on as Harry Wink comes off.
Spurs subs: McGee on for Vorm and Edwards on for Janssen.
Atleti sub: Diedhou comes on to replace Partey.
Atleti win another dangerous free kick on the edge of the box and Saul bends it over the top corner. Wasted.
Enrique’s cross is met by Saul but his header cannons off a Spurs defender. Was goalbound.
Spurs still well in this. Another goal and we could see a penalty shoot out. I’m sure the crowd would love that.
Yet another foul from Partey. He’s really putting himself about tonight. Surely up to double figures in terms of free kicks conceded!
A bad slip from Oblak gifts the ball straight to Carroll but his touch lets him down and Atleti recover to spare the keeper’s blushes.
Partey clatters into Carroll. Would have been a yellow had it not been a friendly.
A really good spell from Spurs. They deserve to be level at the very least.
Some more subs to tell you about while all that was going on.
SAVE! Another great block from Oblak from Janssen’s direct effort. Was destined for the far corner.
Now Gabi takes down Mason right on the edge of the box and this is another excellent chance…
SAVE! Great reaction from Oblak as Mason arrives in the box to lash an effort on goal.
Atleti subs: Tiago off for Henrique. Hector off for Hernandez.
A subdued start to this second half. Almost deathly quiet inside the cavernous MCG. Dangerous ball well cleared by Godin with Janssen working.
Trippier feeds Mason but it’s too congested. Easily closed down and blocked.
In it comes from Son but blasted straight into the wall. Disappointing.
Mason blocked off on the edge of the box and now Spurs have the chance to work something with a dangerous free kick of their own.
Not sure whether that was a cross or a shot from Tiago but that was a neat training ground set play, reminiscent of the Argentina play that undid England in France 1998. Simeone, of course, was playing. Instrumental in getting Beckham sent off.
Atleti win a dangerous free kick. Played short by Gabi and Tiago chips to the far post but it’s just too long. Clever idea.
Back underway here at the famous MCG. More used to Warne than Wanyama but enjoying it nonetheless. Son, Mason and Carroll introduced for Spurs at the start of this second half.
HALF TIME: Tottenham Hotspur 0 Atletico Madrid 1
There will be one minute of added time.
Won’t be too much stoppage time, if any. Spurs will go into the break trailing.
He's done well so far.
Another corner for Atleti. In it comes and cleared as far as Partey who lashes it well over the bar.
Slightly against the run of play but that’s what Atleti are capable of. You can’t afford to switch off.
- GoalDiego Godín
GOAL ATLETI! A foul from Winks on Partey gives Atleti a dangerous free kick. And it’s Godin who flicks the ball past Vorm after Walkes touches it into his path.
A better ball from Felipe this time to the back post but again well cleared from under the nose of Torres.
Filipe’s ball cross from the left has far too much on it and is easily dealt with. A bit of a lull in the game at the moment.
Carter-Vickers again to the rescue, sticking out a left boot to clear a dangerous cross from the right flank.
A sparse crowd in tonight, at least it looks that way at this grand 100,000 stadium. Always filed out for AFL and cricket. It's also a chilly night in Melbourne with some scarves and wooly hats on show.
Vrsaljko penalised for a foul on Carter-Vickers and he loooks totally non plussed. Was a high arm though.
Filipe looks for Torres but well read by Walkes and he shepherds the ball out. He’s impressed so far, as has Carter-Vickers.
Still deadlocked approaching the half hour. Spurs have come closest but Torres should have done better with a header direct from the corner.
Lovely turn from Torres. He looks for Partey but really well read by Carter-Vickers, seeing off the danger.
Very ambitious effort from Vrsaljko and it flies well wide of Vorm’s post.
Late challenge from Carter-Vickers on Torres and the former Liverpool and Chelsea striker is not in the least bit impressed. Goes unpunished.
So Spurs have now rattled the bar and the post and really should be ahead. Playing some nice stuff.
POST! Lamela seizes onto Janssen’s flick and he smashes his volley back off the inside of the post.
A nice touch form Janssen but asks a little too much of Eriksen. Spurs still probing and Pochettino will be delighted with this intent.
Eriksen sprints clear but his reverse ball to Lamela is easily read. Atleti break and Torres tests Walkes for pace but lobs well over the bar.
Dangerous cross from Vrsaljko but well dealt with from Wanyama under pressure from Torres.
A very encouraging start from Spurs, certainly in comparison to against Juve. Seeing plenty of the ball.
The bar still rattling after that one. Awful defense from Atleti, letting that ball drop in the box.
BAR! A strong run from Yedlin down the left and he wins Spurs a first corner. Atleti fail to clear and Onomah rattles the bar with a fierce volley!
So a lively start with chances at either end. Torres really ought to have planted his header beyond Vorm.
Eriksen has a pop from distance and it almost deceives Oblak, who awkwardly shovels it behind as it bounces in front of him.
Atleti win the first corner of the evening. In it comes and Godin gets the flick on before Spurs hack clear. It’s another corner and Torres heads over!
Nice work from Lamela and he almost plays in Janssen. A foul by Saul and Spurs win the free kick.
A strong challenge on Trippier from Partey and he immediately looks in some discomfort but he’s thankfully up.
KICK-OFF! Spurs setting up 4-2-3-1 with Janssen on his own up front. No Harry Kane today. Atleti 4-4-2 with Torres and Hector the danger men up front in a dangerous line-up. Both teams in their traditional home strips. 90 minutes then straight to penalties if neccessary.
FIVE MINUTES TO KICK-OFF: The players are in the tunnel and making their way out onto the pitch. Kick-off almost upon us.
TEN MINUTES TO KICK-OFF: The players have headed back in after the warm-up. The atmosphere building in the colossal MCG.
Tottenham are aiming to bounce back from their 2-1 defeat against Juventus in the International Champions Cup on Tuesday whilst Atletico beat Numancia 2-0 in their first pre-season clash.
Diego Simeone (via goal): "I think we have a strong team. We are enthusiastic and have big hopes. We have improved the work we are doing as a club and as a team. We are strong and want to work hard to reach our potential."
Pochettino on Simeone: "Well, if you compare Diego with me, thank you, that’s a big prize. I consider him one of the best managers in the world. He deserves all the credit because it’s always difficult to take a team like Atletico Madrid and play in Champions League finals, win the league in Spain. For me, Diego is one of the best."
Mauricio Pochettino: "Our idea is to play in the same way as we did against Juventus, to be brave and to deliver our ideas. We are preparing for our season and it’s always important to deliver the plan. We are in a process and a period where we need to improve and learn."
And here’s the side that Diego Simeone has selected.
