AEK are now clear in second place, three points ahead of
Panathinaikos who face OFI Crete on Sunday.
Vlasis Kazakis scored the only goal of Xanthi's win in the 56th minute, putting the northern club back into fourth place ahead of Iraklis and boosting their chances of a UEFA Cup spot for next season.
It was the first league defeat for Olympiakos since Oct. 23, 2005.
Vladimir Ivic put AEK ahead in the 11th minute of their game and defender Georgos Alexopoulos gave them a comfortable lead going into halftime with the second just before the break.
Brazilian midfielder Emerson added a third in the 77th minute and although Kallithea got on the scoresheet through Thanasis Tsigas seven minutes from time, AEK's recent signing from Iraklis, Pantelis Kapetanos, scored the visitors' fourth goal two minutes into injury time.
