Diego Souza scored after only 11 seconds in Brazil’s routine 4-0 victory over Australia at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.
The 31-year-old - who took the place of the injured Gabriel Jesus in attack - slid the ball past goalkeeper Mitchell Langerak from Giuliano’s pass after Bailey Wright conceded possession straight from kick-off. It was the perfect start for Tite’s side whose nine-game winning streak was ended by arch-rivals Argentina last week.
Selecao were without the likes of Neymar, Roberto Firmino, Marcelo and Casemiro, but still the South Americans proved far too strong for an Australian side preparing for the Confederations Cup.
Douglas Costa and Giuliano spurned opportunities to extend Brazil’s lead in the first half but the visitors proved much more proficient after the restart with Thiago Silva and Taison adding to the score-line before Souza completed the rout in injury-time.
Australia will need to improve and fast before Ange Postecoglou takes his team to Russia where they will kick off their Confederations Cup campaign against Germany on Monday.

TALKING POINT

Brazil light years ahead of disappointing Socceroos. Even without some of their star players, the South Americans were far superior. Tite’s side were the first team to qualify for the World Cup next summer and on this evidence, they’re in good shape ahead of the tournament.

MAN OF THE MATCH

Diego Souza (Brazil): Probably won’t feature much at the World Cup, but gave himself a decent opportunity of earning a place on the bench in Russia with a solid performance.

KEY MOMENTS

1’ - GOAL AFTER 11 SECONDS! Australia 0-1 Brazil. Australia concede possession straight from kick-off as Bailey Wright passes straight to Giuliano. The playmaker drives at the home defence before sliding through Souza who pokes the ball into the back of the net, despite goalkeeper Langerak getting a hand to the shot.
23’ - CHANCE! Brazil ought to double their lead but a glorious opportunity is spurned! Giuliano is picked out in acres of space on the right. He cuts it back for Costa who somehow misses contact with the ball.
28’ - GOAL DISALLOWED! Souza latches onto a delightful pass from Luiz and coolly lifts the ball over Langerak... but the linesman's flag is raised and it won't count.
34’ - CHANCE! Coutinho releases Sandro on the wing, and the full-back crosses for Souza. The Brazilian forward dummies the ball, providing a gilt edged chance for Giuliano who blazes the ball over the bar.
62’ - GOAL! Australia 0-2 Brazil. Silva heads home from close range to double Brazil's advantage! Luis had hammered a header against the crossbar from a corner, but the danger wasn't over. Caio sent the ball back into the danger area and the PSG defender bundled it over the line.
75’ - GOAL! Australia 0-3 Brazil. Taison, the Brazilian substitute, fires in the visitors' third after a well worked team move. Paulinho provides the assist. A productive day for Tite's side.
90+3' - GOAL! Australia 0-4 Brazil. Souza grabs his second of the match with the last kick of the game with a clean header from a corner, giving Langerak no chance. Brazil worthy winners here.
