Nico Schulz scored a late winner on his Germany debut as Joachim Low’s side edged past Peru with an entertaining 2-1 victory.
The Hoffenheim left back was handed a first start for the national team on the ground of his club side and ultimately made the difference as Germany fought back from 1-0 down to claim a win in this international friendly.
The match was played at a good tempo throughout, with Peru looking to hit out on the counter. They got their rewards after 22 minutes when Luis Advincula surged into the Germany box and beat Marc Andre Ter Stegen at the near post with a powerful drive.
Julian Brandt equalised just a few minutes, though, clipping a finish over Pedro Gallese after being played through on the Peru goal. Gallese made a number of good saves, but gave Germany the win late on, allowing a tame Schulz shot to squirm through his hands.
TALKING POINT - Did Marc-Andre Ter Stegen grab his chance?
Many believed that Ter Stegen should have been Germany’s first-choice goalkeeper at the World Cup. He has become one of the world’s best at Barcelona and with Manuel Neuer injured for much of last season, the 26-year-old might have started in Russia. Low is loyal to Neuer, though, and so this was a big chance for Ter Stegen to stake his claim.
Did he do enough? The Barca keeper will likely think he could have done better with Peru’s goal. Other than that, impressive enough.

MAN OF THE MATCH - Toni Kroos (Germany)
Germany’s attackers didn’t cover themselves in glory with this performance, with Timo Werner, Marco Reus and Brandt all spurning golden opportunities. But Toni Kroos was the man who created many of those opportunities. With Mesut Ozil no longer part of the Germany set up, Kroos has complete creative control. He’s long been an important figure for them, but now their entire team revolves around the Real Madrid midfielder.

KEY MOMENTS
- 3’ REUS WAS THROUGH! That probably should have been the opening goal for Germany. Reus was played through, but Gallese came off his line to make the save at the attacker's feet.
- 18’ WERNER WIDE! That's another golden opportunity for Germany to take the lead. Peru conceded possession cheaply, with Reus rolling the ball into Werner. But he scuffs his shot wide.
- 21’ GOAL! Germany 0-1 Peru: What a fantastic goal and Peru have the lead! Advincula picked up the ball and surged into the Germany box, lashing home a finish at the near post! What a moment for the South Americans!
- 25’ GOAL! Germany 1-1 Peru: Germany weren't behind for long! Peru conceded possession near the corner flag, with Brandt played through. His chip beat Gallese, who rushed off his line, and the Peru defenders couldn't clear off the line in time.
- 33’ GOOOOOOOOO... NO! The flag was up. Werner rounds Gallese in the Peruvian goal and slots into the empty net. But the RB Leipzig striker was in an offside position when the ball was played.
- 54’ SCOOPED OVER! Germany come flying forward on the counter attack, with Werner played through. But while he lifted his shot over Gallese, he also lifted it over the crossbar.
- 57’ FARFAN... HE'S MISSED! That looked for all the world like a second Peruvian goal. Advincula played a wonderful ball to Farfan, who was clean through. But he shoots over!
- 85’ GOAL! Germany 2-1 Peru: It's a goal for the debutant, but it came as a result of a mistake by Gallese! He allowed the rather weak shot from Schulz to squirm through his hands. The Peruvian goalkeeper really should have dealt with that.
