FT

Peep! The last touch is from Gregoritsch, another misguided header that flies wide although from a harder chance, and England have just about held on to win!

90+2'

OFF THE LINE! Pickford clatters into Godfrey as he punches a shot clear. The ball breaks to Schopf, who drills in a low shot from the left and Ben White blocks it on the line!

90'

We'll have three more minutes.

89'

CHANCE! What a miss! With England all over the place Austria whip a cross into the box, where the unmarked Gregoritsch puts a simple header wide from ten yards out. Alexander-Arnold has gone off, with no substitutions left England will play out with ten.

88'

Alexander-Arnold has now been booked - for not leaving the pitch or coming back on without permission? Answers on a postcard please.

87'

Hinteregger is booked for Austria. Alexander-Arnold looks in bother here; he might have tweaked a muscle here as he looks uncomfortable.

86'

This game has lost it's rhythm a little now; infinity substitutions will do that.

82'

Yet more changes, as Trimmel and Baumgartlinger enter the fray for Lainer and Schlager. Pickford then comes perilously close to sliding out of the area as he dives out to the left to gather the ball.

81'

Austria could still have a say in this. A long, diagonal ball finds Friedl on the left of the area, but he shins his attempted cross into the area and it's cleared. Sabitzer then has another lash from distance, which Pickford spills awkwardly before Godfrey scrambles clear.

77'

Calvert-Lewin breaks forward through the inside right channel after a through pass by Saka. He makes it into the area, but neither crosses nor shoots as he drills the ball across and it evades Watkins at the far post.

74'

CLOSE! After a Friedl shot is deflected over, Schaub bullets in a corner from the right and it whips right across goal, missing everyone and skidding a yard wide of the far post.

71'

That's your lot form Grealish, as he's replaced by Ben White.

For Austria, Alaba and Kalajdzic also depart, Gregoritsch and Schopf taking their place.

69'

Delightful feet again from Grealish, who jinks into space on the left of the area but his Calvert-Lewin doesn't read his low cross and the ball drifts out of play.

66'

Calvert-Lewin is booked for dangerous play, catching Dragovic in the face with a stray boot as he jumped.

64'

OFF THE BAR! Sabitzer has another go from the edge, this time curling it over Pickford but off the crossbar.

63'

Blimey, what a let off for Godfrey! A loose back pass from him almost trickles past Pickford and into the goal.

62'

Changes, and loads of them. James Ward-Prowse, Olly Watkins, Ben Godfrey, Dominic Calvert Lewin are on while Mings, Kane, Rice and Lingard are off for England. There are two changes for Austria too, in a revolving door of players. Baumgartner and Laimer depart, while Grillitsch and Schaub enter stage left.

59'

Sabitzer has a pop from 25 yards out, which deflects wide for a corner.

58'

That was swift, slick play from England, with the two interjections from Grealish key to the whole thing.

  • Bukayo Saka
GoalBukayo SakaEnglandGOAL! England 1 (Saka 57) Austria 0 Saka scores his first for England! Grealish gets the ball in the centre circle and finds Kane on the left. Neat interplay between Kane and Lingard finds Grealish bursting through to the penalty spot; he's dispossessed as he opens up to shoot, but it falls to Saka who guides the loose ball into an empty net from the left!

GOAL! England 1 (Saka 57) Austria 0

Saka scores his first for England!

55'

Two free kicks in a row from the left yield nothing for England. Set pieces, such a feature of their run at the 2018 World Cup, have been poor so far tonight.

52'

Lainer hacks down Saka twice in one run down the left. The second, a despairing lunge, draws a yellow card.

51'

Grealish is dumped over on the edge of the Austrian area. It looked a free kick, but Wisser isn't having it.

47'

A lovely, gliding run by Grealish, past a couple and gracefully through midfield, is curtailed when he stumbles into his attempted pass and it's intercepted.

2ND HALF

We're underway again, no changes for either side as far as I can tell. That won't last long, you'd imagine.

  • End of 1st Half
HT

That's half time.

45+1'

Kane hooks a nice ball into the area for Grealish, who can't find anyone with his cut back and Austria clear.

45'

We'll have one additional minute.

44'

Bachmann, who is enjoying his Austria debut, just about pulls off a Cruyff turn on Kane as he was being closed down.

41'

CHANCE! England's defence just evaporated here with one long ball over the top. Neither Coady or Mings take charge of it and Baumgartner picks it up, gliding unopposed at goal as Mings and Coady retreat. Mings eventually gets a block in as Baumgartner opens up to shoot from 12 yards out, and it deflects behind for a corner.

39'

Sabitzer tries to unload one at goal from 25 yards out, but Bellingham dives across to get the block in.

36'

A cross is cleared to Sabitzer, who deftly back heels it to Kaldjzic 20 yards out. Kaladjzic has a yahoo with his left, but it's a daisy-cutter straight at Pickford.

35'

Baumgartner takes Mings on a run down the right wing, and wins a corner.

33'

A lull here, but it's been reasonably entertaining fare so far. Saka, Bellingham, Alexander-Arnold and Grealish in particular are playing like men who want more than a view from the bench in the coming weeks.

29'

GOOD SAVE! Saka wins a loose ball, and finds Grealish in space. He saunters forwards and slides in Kane on the left of the area, and Bachmann is out well to smother the shot. Kane was offside it turns out, but that was sharp play from Bachmann.

28'

Grealish, who was kicked all over the Premier League last season, is fouled twice in quick succession here. The second, from Dragovic, is 25 yards from goal to the left and it's a free kick to England. Alexander-Arnold takes it, the ball breaks to Kane and his hooked cross is punched away by Bachmann.

26'

It's the first glimmer of activity from Austria, as Alaba whips in a low cross that's a yard too far ahead of Kaladjzic and runs out for a goal kick.

22'

Grealish, playing in the hole tonight, shimmies into space and almost slide rules a pass through to Kane. He's coming into it more now.

20'

England get he ball in the area and a half chance falls to Saka from a narrow angle, but he slashes his volley awkwardly high and wide.

20'

Schlager dumps over Saka with a poor tackle in midfield. There's been a few late ones now, and out comes the yellow card.

17'

Laimer absolutely clatters Grealish just outside the area on the left, a challenge that would be a nailed on yellow at Euro 2020. The free kick is cleared to Bellingham, who tries a shot but it's blocked and runs through to Bachmann.

14'

Saka's gone down for England, but after a brief bit of treatment he's back up on his feet.

11'

Bellingham has scrambled the ball in from the corner! Mings gets pulled up for an earlier foul though, and it won't count.

10'

England break quickly down the left, and Saka easily skips by Laimer and Hinteregger to the byline, where his cross is put behind for a corner.

8'

Austria, who are playing in a snazzy black and turquoise kit, break forward. They work it to Baumgartner 30 yards out, who wallops a shot a yard over the bar. Pickford had it covered, but it was a sweet hit.

5'

Kane picks out Alexander-Arnold with a brilliant diagonal pass. Alexander-Arnold takes the ball on the corner of the area, and lashes a shot that deflects behind for a corner. From it, Bellingham rises but can only plant a tame header at Bachmann.

3'

Alexander-Arnold tries to find Kane with a long, diagonal ball, but it's cut out and cleared.

1'

Peep! We're off.

20:00

Both sets of players take the knee, because there is no room for racism in life. Some idiots boo the gesture, and are eventually drowned out by applause.

19:55

The players are striding out onto the pitch, and we're ready to go with the anthems. Our referee tonight is Lawrence Wisser of Belgium.

19:51

In his pre-match interview Southgate is effusive about Bellingham. Could he force his way into the starting XI for the tournament at just 17-years old? There's a space to be claimed in that midfield, and anything close to the for he showed for Dortmund in the Champions League will be a persuasive argument.

19:46

A little history: these two first played in 1908, with England winning the first three encounters between the two by a combined score of 25-3. Austria then frightened the life out of England in a narrow 4-3 defeat in 1932, before turning them over 2-1 in Vienna in 1936 for their first victory. In between in 1934, Austria's Wunderteam reached the semi-finals of one of those new fangled World Cup things that England felt was beneath them.

19:40

And what of Austria at the Euros? They're in Group C and will face North Macedonia, the Netherlands and the Ukraine. They've only contested a major tournament twice this century, and went out in the group stages of the Euro 2008 they co-hosted and then Euro 2016 in France. With potentially three teams going through from their group, surely they'll fancy their chances of a longer run this time.

19:35

So, can England and their rank of right backs kick on and win Euro 2020? As asks go, it’s big; it might be a de facto home tournament for Southgate’s team, but an awful lot hinges on the state of Harry Maguire’s ankle. England don’t have the depth there that the do to the right of him, or anything close to it. There’s also the state of the draw; if England did win their group – in itself far from a given – they’ll face the runner-up from Group F in the round of 16. That means one of Germany, France, Portugal or Hungary.

19:30

Austria are captained tonight by David Alaba, who has just agreed to leave Bayern Munich after 13 years and sign for Real Madrid on a free transfer after Euro 2020. Between the sticks is Daniel Bachmann of Watford, while RB Leipzig’s Marcel Sabitzer leads the line in attack.

19:24

Jesse Lingard has been instructed to ‘prove me wrong,’ by Gareth Southgate, which if he does will be a futile victory as unless there’s an injury in midfield or up front between now and next Friday Lingard can’t get in the squad. There are no places for any of the Manchester United, Manchester City or Chelsea players after their European final exertions, but it’s a great chance for others; Jude Bellingham starts for the first time, Jack Grealish returns and there’s an opportunity for Arsenal’s Bukayo Saka.

19:19

And your Austria:

19:15

Your England for the evening:

19:09

Good evening! You’ve obviously heard that there’s a pre-Euros warm up game on tonight. England take on Austria at the Riverside in Middlesbrough tonight, with both teams looking to fine-tune ahead of the big one.

It’s one of two friendlies for England this week, and they will return to the Riverside to face Romania on Sunday. The Austrians are looking to rebuild their confidence after their last outing, where they were thrashed 4-0 at home by Denmark in a World Cup Qualifier in March. Ouch!

Team news and all the build-up from Middlesbrough will follow shortly.
