Mexico have narrowed down their search for a new coach to two candidates. The Mexican Football Federation have not elaborated on names, although media speculation is centering on legendary striker Hugo Sanchez and former Argentina midfielder Americo Galle
"We are not mentioning any names, but we can say there are two candidates," said FMF general secretary Decio de Maria.
The job has been vacant since Argentine Ricardo La Volpe's contract ended following Mexico's second-round exit at the World Cup finals in Germany.
Sanchez won two Mexican championships during a three-year stint with UNAM, but he left the club last year when he resigned after a dismal run of results.
Gallego played as a tough-tackling midfielder in Argentina's 1978 World Cup winning team and has an outstanding record as a club coach.
He has won the Argentine championship with three different clubs - River Plate, Independiente and Newell's Old Boys - and the Mexican championship with Toluca, his current club.
