"The only thing you want to do is train for the match against Athletic Bilbao. The minute you go on holiday you can think about the transfer, you can read the papers," the Spain international told reporters on Friday.
Ivan Helguera has spoken out on the final weekend of action in La Liga. Stating his desire to win the title after a hard season and the fact that the Beckham transfer means little to him after all the big names that have arrived at the club in the past couple of years.
With the final game looming and Real Sociedad hot on the heels of Real Madrid in the chase for the title, Helguera believes that after all the effort put into the season by the club, Madrid cannot afford to make a mistake now:
"We don't want any surprises now, we have worked hard all season in an effort to win the La Liga title. We have suffered a lot this season and hope that we don't make a mistake, so that we can go on and win the title".
The Beckham transfer news has taken all the headlines recently, but Helguera does not see what all the fuss is about:
"It doesn't disturb me much because were used to it. For all time that I have played for Real Madrid, transfers have always happened like this."
It seems to be common place now for Real Madrid to spend heavily on a new signing, having done so since 1999 with Anelka, Figo in 2000, Zidane in 2001 and Ronaldo in 2002, making the Beckham saga an unwanted distraction for the players as they close in on the title.
