Phew! What a game. Liverpool gave it everything, but City ran out deserved winners. Superb from Caballero in the shootout, who repaid the faith shown in him by boss Manuel Pellegrini. Is this the first of many trophies for City in Pellegrini's last hurrah?

LIVERPOOL IN PENALTY SHOOTOUTS: Played: 17 Won: 14 Lost: 3 In Cup finals: Played: 5 Won: 5.
What will be going through the players' minds now? Who will be the hero here? Sterling? Mignolet? So many possibilities!
Could well be...
FT: Liverpool 1-1 Manchester City. That's it! Penalties! Liverpool's last three major trophies have been won on penalties, City not quite so experienced.
One added minute here...
Lucas again gets his head to a free-kick to get the ball clear for Liverpool. So close to penalties!
Yaya Toure whips a free-kick into the middle, but once again Liverpool get it clear. They are hanging on at the moment.
Lallana reacts badly to a tackle from Yaya Toure, and all hell breaks loose! Brave man to take on the City midfielder. Both players are cautioned for their troubles.
Kolo > Yaya
Five minutes to go. Navas tries to get around Milner, but Lucas is there to make the challenge. Liverpool counter.
RELIEF! Milner can breathe again, after his poor header back to Mignolet is read by Aguero, who can only volley over the bar, with the Reds stopper stranded.
Milner drifts another teasing cross in and Origi is inches away from making contact. Liverpool very much the better team at the moment!
Final change for City, and no it is not Joe Hart. Silva makes way, with Wilfried Bony coming on.
Otamendi hacks down Sturridge, and earns himself a yellow card. All happening again!
SAVE! Caballero is next to produce a brilliant stop, this time keeping Origi's header out after Milner picked him out in the centre. Quite the scramble to clear for City.
No brotherly favours there. Kolo dispossesses Yaya as the City midfielder breaks.
Liverpool trying to slow the game down. With no fresh legs to bring on, they know they'll tire.
Here we go again! Are we going to see a winner?
That would be something!
ET HT: Liverpool 1-1 Manchester City. Mignolet keeps Liverpool in it. 15 minutes to go!
MAGNIFICENT STOP! What a save from Mignolet. Aguero darts through the middle, Lucas can't get there, Aguero flicks the ball goalwards, but Mignolet sticks out a hand to keep it out.
Both sides have been extremely cagey in this extra time period - after a thrilling second half, we're back to a similar pattern of play to the first 45 minutes.
That's what it meant...
Origi has a go at goal from distance, but gets far too much loft on it, and the ball flies over the top. Caballero still a mere spectator.
Silva whips a corner into the middle, Origi fails to clear with a flick, it comes to Yaya Toure at the back post, but Mignolet claims his cross well.
Chances few and far between, despite the energy levels. Neither side can keep hold of the ball at the moment. Aguero well marshalled.
Liverpool force Navas right out with their incredible pressing. Surely they can't keep this up?
Zabaleta feeds Aguero, but he is dispossessed and Liverpool counter. Still high octane stuff here.
Lovely build up play from Liverpool, but they try too much again, and the move breaks down.
Milner comes across to deliver a corner and it comes to Origi at the back post. He tries to fight past Kompany but City eventually win the goal kick after good work by Sterling
Sturridge also still full of running. This is his first 90 minutes since returning from injury.
City with the early possession, but Liverpool are still pressing at every opportunity.
Two changes for City for extra time. Pablo Zabaleta and Jesus Navas come on for Fernando and Sagna. We are under way again!
City really should have won it...
What a pulsating second half! City really should be on their way up the famous steps right now, with Raheem Sterling guilty of missing several clear-cut chances. However, with their only shot on target, Liverpool levelled through Philippe Coutinho. Both sides still look full of energy, so don't expect the action to relent!
FT: Liverpool 1-1 Manchester City. We have extra time here!
Coutinho cleverly squares the ball for Sturridge but Sagna gets across to clear. All Liverpool late on here.
Pellegrini does not look happy on the City bench. His team should be out of sight.
Who'd be a 'keeper'?
Liverpool's famous anthem rings around Wembley. Fans are in fine voice after their side got themselves back into it.
Four added minutes for someone to find a winner here, or it is extra time for us!
MIGNOLET AGAIN! Would you believe it! Yaya Toure should score, gets his header wrong, it falls to him again, but Migolet is equal to it!
End-to-end stuff now as Origi deflects a long-range shot into the arms of Caballero. City go down the other end and Silva almost gets in, but his shot is half-cleared by Liverpool for a corner. Kompany has been booked in the meantime!
SAVE! Fernando really should have won it for City, but he fires straight at Mignolet from close range. Fine stop, but a yard either side and it is a goal.
Can goes into the book for a rash challenge. All happening here!
Sterling's misses have proven to be costly! After the ball bobbles around the box, Clyne fires across the face of goal, Lallana looks certain to score, but his effort from close-range comes out off the post, but straight to Coutinho, who side-foots home.
GOAL! Liverpool 1-1 Manchester City. Salvation for Liverpool as Coutinho equalises!
Attacking change from Klopp, with Divock Origi coming on to replace the very ineffective Firmino.
MISS! Sterling again! Absolutely brilliant from Aguero to carve out an opportunity out of nothing, pulls it back for Sterling, who scuffs his shot wide.
Better pressure from Liverpool. They are forcing City right back now, but still no shots on target!
Great defensive line from City to keep playing Liverpool offside. Might well be down to a certain captain's organisation...
Fernando needlessly drags Lallana down in the middle of the pitch, and it's a yellow card for the City midfielder.
Two shots on target all game, both for City. Both sides have much more in their lockers than that...
Liverpool have to show much, much more. They still have not tested Cabellero.
Seems Milner has been switched to left-back to accommodate Lallana.
Moreno's game is over, with Lallana coming on. He has started in every round up to the final. Is he the man for the big occasion?
It looks like Adam Lallana is about to come on for Liverpool...
SAVE! Better from Mignolet. Sterling feeds Aguero, who takes a wonderful first touch to make space for the shot, fires at goal, but Mignolet is down quickly to smother.
City still on the attack. Aguero's movement is excellent, but Yaya Toure has been the best player on the pitch.
City could exploit those gaps with the talent they have.
Silva curls the resulting free-kick over the top. Mignolet was scrambling across, but was happy to leave it be.
Moreno is penalised this time for a foul on Fernandinho, and earns himself a caution. Can be so careless at times.
Next goal wins here. City could kill Liverpool's spirit with a second.
NO PENALTY! Huge cries from the City end as Aguero goes down under challenge from Moreno, who left his leg hanging. Referee Oliver says no! Seen them given...
Incredible opportunity. Such a fine City move. Liverpool committing more bodies forward, and struggling to cope at the back.
WHAT A MISS! Had to be him. The script was set for Sterling to net against his former club, but after great work from Yaya Toure and Silva to pick him out, the England forward somehow side-foots wide!
Clyne gets forward well down the right, and Sterling tracks him, giving away a corner. Milner delivers deep and Coutinho keeps it alive, but Otamendi clears from Can's corner.
Liverpool have responded well to going a goal behind, but they have to test Cabellero.
CHANCE! That was the moment! Sturridge plays a one-two with Henderson before playing in Milner, but the Liverpool midfielder slices his shot well over the bar from eight yards. Liverpool's best chance of the game, but they're still waiting for a shot on target.
Liverpool need a response. City fans in full voice, with their side looking very much in control
He got lucky!
Clyne is the first man to go into referee Michael Oliver's book for a late challenge on Sterling. He was on a last warning.
All is not lost. Of the last 10 teams to score the first goal in the League Cup final, only four have gone on to lift the trophy.
Silva again pivotal to the move. His long ball picks out Aguero, who is much more sensible this time, holds it up, waits for the overlap from Fernandinho, who fires at goal from the angle, but Mignolet has to do much better, allowing the ball to roll underneath him and into the net.
GOAL! Liverpool 0-1 Manchester City. Gift for City as Mignolet mistake allows Fernandinho to break deadlock!
Ageuro takes the wrong option, lashing the ball way over from a tight angle. Had runners arriving in the box. Fine pass from Silva to pick him out.
Liverpool with the early possession. Sturridge wins a free-kick after holding the ball up well.
One Wembley members still tucking into their half time snack. So many seats still empty!
We go again at Wembley! Which way will it go? So hard to predict at the moment!
STAT: That was the first time in 87 games in all competitions that Liverpool have not registered an attempt on target in the first half.
Solid, if unspectacular...
Cagey, tactical and nervous - everything you'd expect from a final! Neither side have really been able to find their rhythm, with defences very much on top. Sergio Aguero came closest to breaking the deadlock, but saw his goalbound effort brilliantly tipped onto the post by the much-maligned Simon Mignolet. Liverpool have produced some good play in and around the box, but that killer pass has eluded them so far. Finely poised!
HT: Liverpool 0-0 Manchester City.
Overlooking the fact that both Liverpool defenders have played well...
Two added minutes at the end of the half, mainly as a result of that earlier clash of heads.
Liverpool with over 60% possession, but only City have created any real openings.
Strange corner from Sterling evades everyone. Ironic cheers from the City end. Still neither side able to find a way through.
Lucas somewhat fortunate to escape the game's first booking for a wild lunge on Aguero. Referee Oliver just gives him a talking to.
Jordan Henderson works the ball down the left well, but again Kompany is the man to break up the Liverpool move.
Still very cagey. City seeing more of the ball now, but Liverpool still a threat. Only the Aguero opening to date.
City get lucky in winning a corner after Silva's poor delivery. Second corner comes in, but again Silva cannot find his target.
Danger seems to be on as Sturridge brings the ball down in the box, but his touch deserts him at the last and the move breaks down.
Sterling uses his trademark quick feet to dart past his man and make space for the shot, but his effort hits Silva and flies wide.
NO PENALTY! Moreno goes down very easily under challenge from Fernandinho. Referee Oliver having none of it.
City doing most of their attacking on the break. Liverpool getting caught upfield.
Referee Michael Oliver gives Liverpool a free-kick right on the edge of the area. James Milner lays it off to Coutinho, who fires across goal, with the ball just evading Kolo Toure.
City have grown into the match and they're doing most of the pressing after Liverpool's fast start. The loss of Sakho could be a big one for the Reds because they're so short on central defenders.
The debate goes on...
Liverpool trying to settle again after being forced into that change. City dangerous on the counter, and will feel they should be in front.
It's Kolo Toure against Yaya Toure now - the first time brothers have played on opposing sides in a League Cup final.
Sometimes, football is not the most important thing.
CHANCE! Ball falls to Roberto Firmino, who has been quiet so far, but the Brazilian lashes well over the top after making space for the shot.
Sakho cannot carry on here. He is distraught to be coming off, but the Liverpool medical staff have taken the decision out of his hands. That clash of heads clearly affected him. Kolo Toure comes on.
SAVE! Brilliant stop from Simon Mignolet. Silva picks out the run of Aguero through the middle, the City hitman cuts inside, beats a bewildered-looking Sakho, but his goalbound effort is tipped onto the post by Mignolet.
Sterling does very well down the left to win a free-kick off Henderson. The former Liverpool player is getting plenty of stick from his old supporters, but he's started this game strongly for City.
Again Lucas heads clear. The makeshift centre-back is holding his own here. Excellent delivery from Silva from the left.
Liverpool fans in fine voice, as they like the sight of their team passing the ball around well. Still even.
Back under way. Both players seem okay. Game lacking any real intensity early on.
Break in play as Sakho and Emre Can receive treatment after a clash of heads. Looked like a nasty collision.
Aguero finally sees some of the ball, but with his back to goal, he cannot do any damage from there.
Pretty timid affair so far. Liverpool holding their line well, with City starting to grow into this.
Fernandinho is playing down the right, as he did in Kiev, and is actually causing plenty of problems.
Great header from Lucas to get up and head a Bacary Sagna cross away. Well timed jump.
Coutinho again tries to play the ball through for Daniel Sturridge, but Vincent Kompany reads it brilliantly.
First shot at goal comes from City, but Fernandinho volleys well over after a free-kick was only partially cleared.
Philippe Coutinho looks the other way, plays a superb pass through to the onrushing Nathaniel Clyne, but the full-back cannot quite get there.
Mamadou Sakho and Lucas have their first work to do, but easily get the ball clear. Still, all Liverpool.
Still all Liverpool. City can't get out of their own half at the minute.
Jeers from the Liverpool end for Raheem Sterling. Reds calmly getting into their stride.
Fast start from Liverpool. Alberto Moreno is played in by Daniel Sturridge, the full-back fizzes it across goal, but Will Cabellero gathers well. Good confidence boost for the Argentine.
The 2016 League Cup final is under way here. We will see if Lucas can hold his own in central defence. Sergio Aguero will certainly fancy his chances!
National anthem time!
BAD OMEN? Jurgen Klopp has now reached a cup final in each of his last five seasons as a manager, but he has lost the last three.
Ten minutes away!
A gamble from Manuel?
The last eight meetings in all competitions between these sides have produced 32 goals, with both teams finding the net in each match.
DID YOU KNOW? This will be the first final in any competition contested between Liverpool and City. In cup competitions, Liverpool are unbeaten in their last eight against City (W6 D2), last being defeated by them in an FA Cup fourth-round replay in 1973.
Everything you need to know about the 56th League Cup final...
VIDEO: The Liverpool boss is on a mission...
Where will the final be won or lost? Can Lucas hold his ground at the back? Silva key?
Have your say!
Liverpool's route has been rather for tumultuous. After needing penalties to dispose of League Two side Carlisle in the third round, Wembley seemed a long way off. However, the quarter-final thrashing of Southampton made fans believe, before penalties were again needed to dispose of Stoke in the semi-finals.
City's road to Wembley has been pretty much trouble free. Pellegrini's men netted 13 goals in the three rounds leading up to the semi-final clash with Everton. Defeat at Goodison Park in the first leg left City with a deficit to overturn, which they managed in somewhat controversial circumstances at the Etihad, as the tie-winning goal appeared to have been provided when the ball was out of play.
Meanwhile, further north...
Just the one change and, as predicted, Pellegrini goes with his "cup goalkeeper" Willy Cabellero. The Argentine stopper was not convincing against Chelsea in the FA Cup but he retains his place, ahead of Joe Hart. Otherwise, City are full strength.
Daniel Sturridge again leads the line for Liverpool. That's three starts in a row for the England hitman. He hasn't completed 90 minutes yet, but the sight of him in the side will please Reds fans and England followers alike. This is the same side that beat Augsburg on Thursday.
