Manchester City take a huge step towards the Carabao Cup final with an emphatic victory at Old Trafford. The match – and the tie – was all but over at half-time, with City 3-0 up after a devastating performance. United improved in the second half, when City’s intensity dropped, but they will need to win by two at the Etihad in the second leg just to take the semi-final to penalties.

Manchester United 1-3 Manchester City
Gundogan passes the ball out of play. City have been sloppy in this second half. In the first, they were glorious.
Important save from Bravo! Rashford hits a surprise, swirling shot from 20 yards that is fumbled round the post by Bravo.
Phil Foden gets a run-out, coming on to replace Riyad Mahrez. Fred, who has been in a foul mood all night, tries to shove Mahrez off the field.
Phil Jones is hobbling around with cramp, to the great amusement of the City fans. United have used all their substitutes.
City are passing the clock down. Although United have had an even share of the second half, they haven't threatened to score a second.
- Yellow cardKyle WalkerManchester City
Kyle Walker is booked for timewasting, as perceived by Mike Dean, referee.
- OffMason GreenwoodManchester United
- OnAnthony MartialManchester United
United's final substitution: Anthony Martial replaces Mason Greenwood.
- OffKevin De BruyneManchester City
- OnGabriel JesusManchester City
De Bruyne seems okay, but he has been replaced by Gabriel Jesus as a precaution, or because Pep is bored.
De Bruyne is face down after a collision with Lindelof. There was a bit of concern that he might be unconscious, but he seems to be okay.
The daft thing is that, for all City's dominance, United will still be in the tie if they can pull off a 3-2 defeat tonight.
- Yellow cardBrandon WilliamsManchester United
Williams is booked for clattering Mahrez.
De Gea makes another save, this time more comfortable, from Mahrez.
- GoalMarcus RashfordManchester United
GOAL! Man Utd 1-3 Man City (Rashford 70) It could have been 4-0; instead it's 3-1. City gave the ball away near the halfway line and United pounced. Greenwood played a nice pass to put Rashford through on Bravo, and he finished emphatically into the bottom corner.
De Gea makes a fine save from Mahrez! That could easily have been 4-0. Mahrez teased Williams on the edge of the box, beat him with a stepover and smacked a low right-footed shot that was kicked away by the stretching De Gea.
City's intensity has dropped in the last 10-15 minutes, which will be a relief to United. In fact the second half has been a fairly even contest.
- OffDaniel JamesManchester United
- OnAngel GomesManchester United
Another United substitution, with Angel Gomes replacing Daniel James.
- Yellow cardRodriManchester City
Rodri is booked for a foul on Pereira.
City counter-attack dangerously through Bernardo Silva. He finds De Bruyne, whose fierce shot from 20 yards is blocked by Jones.
United have an extended spell of possession, which in the context of the match counts as a small triumph.
There is no sign of City easing off. They look in the mood to completely humiliate United, primarily as payback for that league defeat last month.
Harry Maguire and Scott McTominay are having superb games for United.
Mahrez hits the outside of the post! When a City corner was half cleared, Mendy cushioned a clever pass over the top of the outrushing defence. It found Mahrez, who beat Williams and slammed a shot from a very tight angle that hit the outside of the post. De Gea had it covered.
- Yellow cardFredManchester United
Fred is booked for a hack at Bernardo Silva.
Sterling, who strangely has never scored against United, has a shot well blocked by Williams.
Fred, Rashford and Williams combine nicely on the edge of the City box before Williams hits a tame shot that is easily saved by Bravo.
- OffJesse LingardManchester United
- OnNemanja MaticManchester United
Manchester United begin the second half. They have made a half-time change, with Nemanja Matic replacing the desperate Jesse Lingard.
- End of 1st Half
Man Utd 0-3 Man City Well that escalated quickly. After an even start to the game, City - who are playing without a centre forward - blew United away with some devastating passing and movement. The scoreline is extremely grim for United. I suspect it is going to get worse.
Sterling misses an absolute sitter, missing his kick eight yards from goal. United have fallen apart in the last 10 minutes.
This is getting embarrassing. De Bruyne's curling cross is stabbed wide from six yards by the stretching Sterling. It was close to offside, so might have been disallowed by VAR had he scored, but even so.
Bernardo Silva almost makes it 4-0! De Gea denied him with a brilliant close-range save. The flag had gone up against Sterling in the build-up, but it looked very close and could easily have been overturned had Bernardo Silva scored.
There was a VAR check for a foul on Williams by Mahrez, just before the ball reached De Bruyne, but the goal was rightly given.
- Own-goalAndreas PereiraManchester United
GOAL! Man Utd 0-3 Man City (Pereira og 39) This is brutal. City break to devastating effect and take a three-goal lead. Eventually De Bruyne twists Jones inside out on the left of the area and whacks a shot that is saved by de Gea - but the ball rebounds off Pereira and into the net.
Greenwood misses a half-chance for United, dragging a snapshot well wide from 17 yards.
- Yellow cardJesse LingardManchester United
Lingard is booked for a late tackle on Fernandinho, having miscontrolled the ball originally. He's having a shocker.
This could get very messy for United.
- GoalRiyad MahrezManchester City
GOAL! Man Utd 0-2 Man City (Mahrez 33) Riyad Mahrez makes it two! Bernardo Silva picked up a loose ball just past the halfway line and played a delicious through pass to Mahrez, who danced round the outrushing de Gea to score. City have been majestic.
When a United corner is half cleared, Pereira curls in a wicked ball from the right that bounces across the six-yard line. Lindelof hooks it back into the middle and City clear.
City are making United pay for having the nerve to win at the Etihad. The last 20 minutes have been painfully one-sided.
Greenwood and Rashford have swapped positions, with Rashford now up front.
Greenwood moves to the left and plays a good pass infield to find Lingard. He gives it away. After a decent start, United are struggling.
Sterling almost makes it 2-0! Walker played a one-two with De Bruyne and picked out Sterling in the area. His first shot was blocked by Wan-Bissaka, and Jones threw himself in the way of Sterling's follow-up.
It's all City now. Mahrez goes on a dangerous slalom and hits a low shot that is blocked by a United defender.
Feel the enthusiasm.
Although it was a spectacular goal, United's defending was pretty poor. They allowed Bernardo Silva to move onto his left foot, completely unchallenged, and then to shoot from 20 yards.
- GoalBernardo SilvaManchester City
GOAL! Man Utd 0-1 Man City (B Silva) Bernardo Silva gives City the lead with a stunning goal! He moved infield from the right, away from Fred, and drove a spectacular shot across goal that beat de Gea and flew in off the underside of the bar. Great goal!
City have had 57 per cent of the possession so far. It feels like more, to be honest.
The game has started as expected, with lots of City possession and United looking dangerous on the break. It's been good to watch.
A neat header from Greenwood finds Rashford, who wins a corner off Fernandinho. Nothing comes of it.
Now a half chance for City. Mahrez plays a good pass to find Sterling on the left side of the box. He comes inside Wan-Bissaka, looking for the shot, but is crowded out.
A superb counter-attack from United. Fred and Greenwood combine to find Rashford, who dances round Otamendi on the right of the area and slides a cross towards James in the six-yard box. Fernandinho, superbly positioned, gets there first and clears the danger.
Bernardo Silva wins the first corner of the match. It's headed away by Brandon Williams at the near post.
A low cross from James causes a bit of panic in the City area, with Fernandinho eventually lumping the ball clear.
A confident start from City, as you'd expect. They're basically playing a 4-4-2 formation with De Bruyne and Bernardo Silva up front. I've seen it all now.
City have started with Sterling on the left, Mahrez and the right and Bernardo Silva and De Bruyne as a false front two.
- 1st Half
Peep peep! City kick off from right to left.
Some very sad news to report: VAR will be used tonight for the first time in the competition.
Not long now until kick-off, and it's a beautiful night in Manchester.
It's an extremely young United side, with no outfield players over the age of 27. The teenagers Brandon Williams and Mason Greenwood make their Manchester derby debuts. Williams, in particular, will have a job on against the mischievous Riyad Mahrez.
It looks like City will again play a back three of Fernandinho, Otamendi and Rodri, having used that system in their last two games. We'll soon find out.
There’s no away goals rule in Carabao Cup semi-finals, and no extra-time either. If the scores are level on aggregate after 90 minutes of the second leg, the tie goes straight to penalties.
A busy schedule – FA Cup replays next week, Premier League fixtures the week after – mean the second leg will be played in the distant future. To be precise, Wednesday 29 January.
While you wait for kick-off, catch up with the latest transfer speculation from the continent - including a possible move to Manchester for Edinson Cavani.
There's no Harry Maguire for United, presumably because of the injury he suffered at Wolves in the FA Cup. City have left both Sergio Aguero and Gabriel Jesus on the bench, which suggests either Kevin De Bruyne or more likely Raheem Sterling will play as a false nine.
MANCHESTER UNITED De Gea; Wan-Bissaka, Jones, Lindelof, Williams; Fred, Pereira; James, Lingard, Rashford; Greenwood… Subs: Romero, Dalot, Matic, Chong, Gomes, Mata, Martial. /// MANCHESTER CITY Bravo; Rodri, Otamendi, Fernandinho, Walker, De Bruyne, Gundogan, Mendy; Mahrez, B Silva; Sterling… Subs: Ederson, Jesus, Aguero, D Silva, Cancelo, Foden, E Garcia.
Some interesting team news on both sides...
