Mark Duffy scored both goals for Burton, who move to 71 points - six clear of Wigan, who were held to a 3-3 draw at Colchester.
It could have been worse for the Latics: while they led 1-0 and 2-1, they needed a 90th-minute equaliser from Will Grigg to earn a share of the points.
Gillingham and Walsall shared third place on 62 points, the former beating Crewe 3-0 and the latter enjoying a thumping 4-1 win away at Chesterfield.
