In the end, Barcelona were made to sweat a little for the win, but they got the three points to edge them closer to the Liga title. It's been a difficult week for the Catalans, but they responded reasonably well today, even if Valencia let them off the hook a little by not taking their chances. Coutinho and Iniesta were most impressive.

- End of 2nd Half
FULL TIME: Barcelona 2-1 Valencia
DENIS SHOT IS SAVED! Barcelona burst down the pitch at pace on the counter attack, with Denis played in behind. But Neto comes off his line to make the smothering save.
Valencia aren't lumping balls forward, as you might expect from a team at this stage of the game against Barcelona. They are still looking to build from the back as they have done all game.
Three minutes of stoppage time to be played at the end of the match.
Valencia have just a few minutes to find an equaliser. However, Barcelona have the ball and they don't look ready to give it up too easily. The away side need to win it back... somehow.
- Goal by penaltyDaniel ParejoValencia CF
GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAL! Barcelona 2 Valencia 1 (87 mins - Dani Parejo). Valencia have a late lifeline in this match! Parejo squeezes the penalty kick underneath the body at Ter Stegen. The German goalkeeper should have done better there. He guessed the right way. Valencia are back in this!
PENALTY KICK TO VALENCIA! Dembele was adjudged to have fouled Gaya inside the area and the referee points to the spot.
- OffAndrés IniestaFC Barcelona
- OnDenis SuárezFC Barcelona
Indeed, Barcelona make another change and it's Denis who comes on for Iniesta.
Barcelona are now looking to pass out this game. This has been a decent response to the midweek defeat to Roma in the Champions League. This will edge them closer to the league title.
It looks like Valverde is about to make another chance. But why did he wait so long? That has been one of the biggest criticisms of the Barca boss this season - he takes his time to make changes.
Dembele was given a good reception by the home fans as he came off the bench. The Barcelona support want the Frenchman to succeed, but he looks very low on confidence right now.
- OffPhilippe CoutinhoFC Barcelona
- OnOusmane DembéléFC Barcelona
Coutinho has been excellent today and he comes off to be replaced by Dembele.
GREAT MESSI RUN! That would have been a sensational goal from the Barcelona number 10. He embarked on one of his trademark runs, beating three players, but shooting wide.
- Yellow cardGabriel PaulistaValencia CF
There's a booking for the Valencia player. That was a rough tackle on Coutinho.
If Valencia are to mount some sort of comeback, they must score soon. Barcelona are doing their best to suffocate this game. They want to slow it down to stifle their opponents.
Notable that Dembele still hasn't been brought off the bench. The Frenchman's future at the Camp Nou is up in the air. There's a lot of speculation that he could leave in the summer.
INIESTA COMES CLOSE! Messi played a wonderful clipped pass into the box for Iniesta to get on the end of. He sends a volley towards goal, but Neto makes the save to deny him.
- OffGonçalo GuedesValencia CF
- OnAndreas PereiraValencia CF
Marcelino makes his first change of the match. Guedes looks to have tired.
It's in the interests of Valencia to open this game up at this stage. They have 20 minutes to score twice to salvage something from this game. They have the capacity to create chances.
You'll be pleased to hear that you didn't miss much. Messi volleyed over from outside the box and that was just about it, although there is a sense that the game is opening up.
Apologies for the break in bringing you updates from this game. Some technical issues on our end. Yes, we switched it off and on again. That seems to have done the trick.
Today, the Camp Nou is half empty and on days like this it does feel a little lifeless. The renovation will surely help in that regard. They want to put a roof on it to keep the noise inside.
It should be noted that Barcelona this week received the green light to redevelop the Camp Nou. The new stadium will see the capacity expanded to over 100,000 - the biggest football stadium on the planet.
COUTINHO WIDE! The Brazilian playmaker controls the ball about 20 yards out, beats one man and takes aim, but his shot flashes just past the far post. Not far away from Coutinho.
This match seems to have lost some of its tempo and pace over the past 10 minutes or so. Valencia look to have lost their urgency after losing that second goal. You can't blame them.
Will Valencia hit back again? They will feel hard done by at the moment. They don't deserve to be losing 2-0. They have created a number of chances. They could have been level!
Umtiti has come in for some criticism in recent weeks. He has been pressing for a new contract at Barcelona, but his form has been poor of late. That goal will boost his confidence.
It's fair to say that goal came against the run of play. Valencia were pressing for an equaliser at the start of the secon half, but they were undone at the back by a set piece.
- GoalSamuel UmtitiFC Barcelona
GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAL! Barcelona 2 (51 mins - Samuel Umtiti) Valencia 0. Out of nothing, Barcelona have doubled their advantage! Umtiti got up from the back and headed home, getting in between two Valencia players from a corner kick. The hosts now have a commanding 2-0 lead!
Umtiti was at fault for that last Valencia chance. He lost the ball and left his team short at the back. Barcelona had Pique to thank for getting back to make the clearance off the line.
PIQUE OFF THE LINE! Yet another big chance for Valencia! The visitors broke on the counter, with Mina feeding Rodrigo. He got the shot away, but Pique got back on the line to clear.
Messi has been exceptionally quiet by his standards so far this afternoon. Coutinho has instead been the main man for Barcelona. The Brazilian is their creator-in-chief today.
While Barcelona have been rather sluggish so far this afternoon, they will pleased with the scoreline at the moment. They have had a tough week and this is a tough test for them.
No changes made by either side at the break. The first half was an entertaining affair, but Valencia must do more to take their chances when they come in the final third.
- 2nd Half
The second half is under way at Camp Nou! Barcelona have a 1-0 lead over Valencia.
What did you make of the first half at the Camp Nou? Are Barcelona doing enough? Should Pique and Messi be given a rest? Can Valencia hit back? Tweet me your thoughts!
- End of 1st Half
HALF TIME: Barcelona 1-0 Valencia. Suarez's goal is the difference between the two teams at the interval, but Valencia are unfortunate to be behind. They may have been the better side.
Pique has some stern words with Mina. The Valencia forward went down rather easily. Pique feels that Mina was trying to get him sent off. Keep in mind that he is on a yellow card.
Barcelona have a lot to thank Ter Stegen for after this first half. Were it not for the German goalkeeper, Valencia would likely be level by this point. Ter Stegen has been busy.
RODRIGO EFFORT! Valencia come close once again to an equaliser. Pique dithers on the ball in his own box, with Guedes winning it. Rodrigo takes the shot, but Ter Stegen makes the save.
Well, it's not often you see that. That was a waste from Messi. He had the chance to swing a freekick into the Valencia box, but there was too much weight on it and it drifts long.
Marcelino will surely be quite pleased with how his team has played in this first half, but he will stress to them at the half time interval that they have to be more clinical in front of goal.
Coutinho is played down the channel into the box, but the playmaker gets caught in two minds and sends a pass-shot to the back post. Neto has the simple task of watching it dribble wide.
MESSI HEADER WIDE! That was close to being a second goal for Barcelona. Messi got on the end of the cross from the right wing, but could only send his effort wide of the post.
Coutinho has been the main man for Barcelona so far. He's the one pulling the strings around the edge of the opposition penalty box. He has really found his feet at Camp Nou recently.
Messi has been very quiet in this first half. He got on the end of a cross from Alba just there, but could only glance a header across the face of goal. That's the most he has done so far.
This has been a really sluggish performance from Barcelona so far. Some of that might be deliberate. They are trying to slow down the play to gain control of the contest.
There's an argument to be made that Valencia have actually been the better team over the opening 30 minutes at the Camp Nou. And yet they find themselves behind. Unfortunate.
Replays show just how good that save from Ter Stegen was. The German had no right o get his hand to such a powerful strike from such close range, but somehow he managed it.
BIG VALENCIA CHANCE! That probably should have been the equaliser for the visitors. A poor pass is seized upon, with Rodrigo firing off a shot inside the box, but Ter Stegen makes the save.
GUEDES OVER! That was a half chance for the Valencia attacker. Guedes takes the shot on the turn, but it flashes over the bar. That was worth a shot. Barcelona don't look so solid.
Both Pique and Umtiti have been in really poor form recently. The two Barcelona centre backs look tired and weary. It's very surprising that Valverde has started both of them today.
Guedes looks like the most dangerous player in white at the moment. He has had a couple of early chances for Valencia. Will he rue those opportunities or is this a sign of more to come?
This has been an entertaining start to the match. Valencia are having a lot of joy down their left side. Barcelona are struggling to track their movement when they get into the final third.
JUST WIDE! That wasn't far away from an equaliser for Valencia. The ball fell to Guedes, but his shot flashes wide of the near post following a deflection off Alba. That was close!
How will Valencia react to losing that goal? The away side had started well at the Camp Nou before Suarez opened the scoring. The early signs are that they will continue to attack.
That goal was all about the pass from Coutinho. Barcelona struggled to break down Roma on Tuesday night. One wonders if that would have been different with Coutinho on the pitch.
I'm not sure if Barcelona deserved that goal on the balance of play over the opening 15 minutes or so, but that illustrates the quality that they have in the final third. They can create something out of nothing.
- GoalLuis SuárezFC Barcelona
GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAL! Barcelona 1 (15 mins - Luis Suarez) Valencia 0. There's the opening goal of the game and it has been scored by Suarez for the hosts! Coutinho played a wonderful ball to the Barcelona striker who made no mistake in finishing past Neto! 1-0 to the Catalans.
Of course, Valencia are still chasing a place in the top three of the Liga table. They are vying with Real Madrid for that position in the table. A result here would give them a big boost.
- Yellow cardGeoffrey KondogbiaValencia CF
Now Kondogbia has entered the book for a late challenge on Paulinho. Probably the right decision.
It's incredible that Pique is even playing this afternoon. He has looked tired for a long time, yet Valverde has still picked him for this game. Is that realy necessary for the Catalans?
Of course, it should be noted that Barcelona are still on course to claim the Liga title with time to spare. They have found it all too easy in the league this season. No real competition.
Suarez has scored 22 times in La Liga this season, but he has missed so many more chances in front of goal. This hasn't been a vintage season for the former Liverpool striker.
- Yellow cardGerard PiquéFC Barcelona
Pique becomes the first player to enter the book. The centre back feels that was a little harsh.
SUAREZ AIR SHOT! That was a golden opportunity for the Barcelona striker. Iniesta beat his man at the byline and squared the pass to Suarez, but he swung and missed his shot.
There's a real subdued feel to the atmosphere at the Camp Nou. The stadium is half empty for this match and the vast majority of the fans present seem to be tourists!
Coutinho is back in the Barcelona team for this game. Of course, the Brazilian playmaker had to watch from the sidelines as his new team crashed out of the Champions League.
TER STEGEN SAVE! Valencia have made a good start to the game and Mina gets a shot away on the Barcelona goal. Ter Stegen is alert early on, though, and makes the diving save.
So, how will Barcelona bounce back after the mid-week defeat to Roma in the Champions League? That was quite the shock for the Catalans. What sort of reaction will we see?
