Well, what an astonishing result at the Santiago Bernabeu. Villarreal defended for much of the match, but they have come away with all three points! This is the second time Real Madrid have lost at home in La Liga this season. The pressure will now mount significantly on Zidane.

- End of 2nd Half
FULL TIME: Real Madrid 0-1 Villarreal
Is there an equaliser left in this game for the home side? They are pressing hard, like they have done for the past 20 minutes, but the away side are still holding firm. Impressive.
This would be a massive result for Zidane, and not in a good way. The pressure was already mounting on the Frenchman, but if Real Madrid lose this it will be unbearable.
Three minutes of stoppage time to be played at the end of the match.
Wow! Villarreal are just minutes away from claiming their first ever league win at the Santiago Bernabeu. Real Madrid were pressing hard for the winner and they were caught out themselves!
- GoalPablo FornalsVillarreal CF
GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAL! Real Madrid 0 Villarreal 1 (87 mins - Pablo Fornals). Real Madrid have been caught out on the counter attack! Villarreal came flying forward on the counter, with Navas making the save from Unal, but Fornals chips the keeper on he rebound. Incredible!
It's not just happening for Real Madrid at the moment. They are getting into attacking positions, but they are showing a lack of imagination in the final third. They can't break down Villarreal.
- OffSamu CastillejoVillarreal CF
- OnAntonio RukavinaVillarreal CF
Castillejo comes off for the home side. Villareal trying to shore things up on the right side.
Real Madrid are now playing in something of a 4-3-3 formation, but their attacking players seem to be playing wherever they feel like it. There's not much shape at the moment.
OVER THE BAR! Vazquez waits and waits to play the ball back to Modric just inside the box, but the Croatian midfielder fires over the bar when he should have hit the target and tested Asenjo, at least.
It's relentless pressure from Real Madrid, but they are still suffering from the same old pressure - no cutting edge. They have plenty of the ball, but are doing very little with it.
This is an opportunity for Asensio to show that he can still be a match winner for Real Madrid. He has fallen out of favour in recent weeks and months, but there's no doubting his quality.
Villarreal have shown in this second half that they are capable of making the breakthrough. They have the ball and are probing this Real Madrid defensive line.
- OffCarlos BaccaVillarreal CF
- OnEnes ÜnalVillarreal CF
That's a striker-for-striker change for the visitors. No change of system.
One of the things Zidane has been criticised for in recent weeks has been his perceived inability to change the flow of games with his changes. This is a big test, in that regard.
Vazquez has come in for criticism from his own supporters this season, but he has justified his place in recent weeks. He has added a real goal threat to his play of late.
Slightly surprising that Zidane has decided to take off Bale. Maybe he's just trying to prevent the Welsh winger from running himself into the ground so soon after recovering from injury.
- OffGareth BaleReal Madrid
- OnMarco AsensioReal Madrid
And the second change sees Asensio come on for Isco.
- OffIscoReal Madrid
- OnLucas VázquezReal Madrid
Real Madrid are making a double change here. First, it's Vazquez who comes on for Bale.
This has been a quiet performance from Isco. The playmaker has actually seen plenty of the ball, but he's done very little with it. Much of that is down to the defending of Villarreal.
Surely Zidane will make a change to his team shortly? They need something different. Vazquez and Asensio have been sent to warm up. Are they about to come on for the hosts?
One of the players that Real Madrid miss in this sort of situation is Ramos. The Spanish international has a tendency for coming up with big goals when his side needs him most.
This is better from Real Madrid. Marcelo is pretty much playing as an out and out winger, peppering the Villarreal penalty area with cross after cross after cross. Relentless.
MODRIC DRIVE AT GOAL! Ronaldo steps over the ball on the edge of the opposition penalty area and lays it off to the Croatian midfielder, who draws the save from Asenjo.
SIDE NETTING FROM BACCA! The Colombian striker brings down a pass inside the Real Madrid penalty area and strikes a shot into the side netting. That was a lowe percentage shot.
This is starting to get rather concerning for Zidane and Real Madrid. Villarreal have probably been the better team in this second half. An away win would really heap on the pressure.
This is an increasingly open match. Real Madrid saw the majority of the possession in the first half, but they struggled to create scoring opportunities. Now, it's very even.
- Yellow cardDani CarvajalReal Madrid
Bacca is brought down by Carvajal and the Real Madrid full back is booked.
It's very easy to see why Asenjo was considered one of the brightest young goalkeepers during his time at Atletico Madrid. Injuries have cost him so much. He is exceptional.
ANOTHER ASENJO SAVE! Ronaldo is fed into the Villarreal penalty area and takes aim from a tight angle, but th Villarreal goalkeeper makes the stop at his near post. Decent save.
There is a feeling that Real Madrid are getting a little desperate here, taking aim from long range, and Villarreal are showing more composure when they attack on the counter.
Great passing move from Villarreal gives them a good shooting opportunity in the Real Madrid penalty area, but nobody gets the effort away and Varane can make the intervention.
KROOS VOLLEY ON GOAL! The cross was played to the opposite side of the penalty area, where the German midfielder was waiting, but his effort was straight down the throat of Asenjo.
That whole epsiode around Cheryshev was a contributing factor in the downfall of Benitez as Real Madrid manager. And then the subsquent rise of Zidane in his place.
Of course, Cheryshev was the player who was fielded illegally in a Copa del Rey match a couple seasons ago, resulting in Real Madrid's expulsion from the competition.
Ronaldo was lively in the first half, but he failed to take any of the chances that came his way. The Portuguese forward is cutting an increasingly frustrated figure this afternoon.
WIDE OF THE TARGET! That was the chance for the former Real Madrid man to grab the opener. Cheryshev turns inside and takes aim from 20 yards out, but he fires just wide.
- OffDaniel RabaVillarreal CF
- OnDenis CheryshevVillarreal CF
Villarreal have made a change at the break, with Raba coming off. He was quiet in the opening 45 minutes.
The pressure is on Real Madrid in this second half. Zidane is under fire and despite the fact that the title race is already over, the champions need to win this game to ease the pressure.
- 2nd Half
The second half is under way at the Santiago Bernabeu! It's still 0-0 between Real Madrid and Villarreal.
What did you make of the first half? Should Real Madrid have had a penalty kick right at the end of the half? Should Zidane be worried about a lack of cutting edge? Tweet me!
- End of 1st Half
HALF TIME: Real Madrid 0-0 Villarreal. A controversial end to the first half at the Santiago Bernabeu. The home side have been the better team, but they haven't found the breakthrough.
WHAT A SAVE! How did that not end up in the back of the net?! Ronaldo should score from a few yards out, but Asenjo smothered the shot. Ronaldo wants a penalty for a trip. He might have a case.
Will Zidane be pleased with how his Real Madrid team have played in the first half? Or will he be frustrated with how they haven't been able to find the breakthrough?
- Yellow cardCarlos BaccaVillarreal CF
There's the first yellow card of the match and it's shown to Bacca.
The thing about Real Madrid's performance so far this afternoon is that it has, for the most part, been much better. But they are still struggling in the final third of the pitch.
Villarreal are now taking it upon themselves to keep possession and see out these final minutes of the first half. It would a big deal if they manage to survive until the break.
Of course, the last time Real Madrid played at home in La Liga was against Barcelona before Christmas, when they were hammered. The Bernabeu is a nervous place now.
There's an intensity to this match that was lacking in the first 15 minutes or so. Real Madrid are pressing hard for an opener, but Villarreal are making the most of the space in behind.
WAS THAT A PENALTY? Bale glances a header towards goal, but the effort appears to be blocked by the arm of a Villarreal defender. The officials shake their heads collectively, though.
One of the differences for Real Madrid this afternoon has been the performance of Kroos. The German looks back to his best and is driving the play of the hosts forward.
In seasons gone by, this would be the point in the match at which Real Madrid would take the lead and not look back. But things have been rather different for them this season.
INTO THE SIDE NETTING! Now Ronaldo takes aim from a tight angle, going for the near post, but the Real Madrid number seven could only find the side netting. Not far away.
RONALDO WIDE OF THE POST! Modric picks a wonderful pass for Ronaldo to burst through, but Asenjo does well to close down the angle and force the Portuguese to dink a finish wide.
The pass from Fornals with the outside of the boot to Bacca was magnificent. There's an understanding between the two Villarreal attackers. That's one to watch for the rest of the game.
CHANCE FOR BACCA! That was the first real opportunity the away side have had in this first half, but Navas and Nacho did just enough to stop Bacca from finding the net.
Real Madrid's best two chances have come from strikes outside the penalty box. Zidane will surely be concerned by how they have failed to make anything work in the area.
It's notable that Real Madrid are starting to crank up the tempo and intensity of their play. They are employing a much higher press on Villarreal whenever they have the ball.
Still no breakthrough here, but Real Madrid are getting closer to an opener. They have seen most of the ball and now they are also starting to create scoring opportunities.
Asenjo also deserves huge credit for keeping his eye on the ball from that freekick. It moved all over the place, it might even have touched a defender on its way through as well.
Ronaldo has lost his touch from freekicks in recent seasons, to the point of derision, but that was an exceptional strike from the Real Madrid number seven. There was so much movement!
RONALDO HITS THE CROSSBAR! What an effort that was from Ronaldo. He struck the freekick well but Asenjo did just enough to palm the ball up on to the woodwork. Close to the opener!
Isco is told to get up by the referee. The Real Madrid playmaker went down on the edge of the box after being sandwiched, but the man in the middle decided it wasn't a foul.
ASENJO MAKES THE SAVE! Marcelo surges forward and takes aim on the Villarreal goal, but the goalkeeper makes the stop to prevent the left back from opening the scoring.
Villarreal deserve credit for the way they have held firm at the back. Real Madrid have had plenty of the ball on the edge of the penalty area, but they have been repelled so far.
There is a sense that the Santiago Bernabeu could errupt with a poor result for the home side this afternoon. There have already been a few whistles and we're only 15 minutes in.
BALE GOAL IS DISALLOWED! Ronaldo heads back across goal from a corner kick, with Bale nodding it home at the back post, but the linesman's flag is up. Bale was indeed offside.
WARNING SIGN! Villarreal come flying forward on the counter attack, but Varane does just enough to prevent the ball from reaching Bacca. That was a warning sign for Real Madrid.
Real Madrid have dominated the possession so far, but they have done very little with it in the final third of the pitch. Villarreal haven't been troubled at the back in the slightest.
The weather in Madrid this afternoon looks to be absolutely rotten. It's not often you say that. The rain is pouring down and it's apparently quite cold as well. Not great football weather.
It's worth noting how Bale seems to be playing in the centre forward role this afternoon, with Ronaldo down the wing. That's different to the way they have played together previously.
Ronaldo hasn't been in great form of late. He starts up front alongside Bale this afternoon, with the Welshman showing his importance to Real Madrid in recent weeks.
There are signs that Zidane has lost a grip of his team. The Real Madrid manager was an angry man when he faced the Spanish football press during the week. Worrying for Zidane.
Zidane has rung the changes from the side that drew at home to Numancia in the Copa del Rey during the week. It was just another poor performance in a poor season for Real.
Villarreal come into this game having sold Bakambu to China during the week, so there is a lot of pressure on the shoulders on Bacca. The Colombian is the main man for the visitors.
So Real Madrid kick off this game 16 points short of Barcelona at the top of La Liga. There's no way that they can catch the Catalans, so is this only about pride for the champions?
