The 55-year-old took over from Luis Enrique as manager of Barcelona, initially signing a two-year contract with an option for a further year.
In his first season they won the league and cup double but were defeated in the quarter-finals of the Champions League by eventual runners-up Roma, and they lost just once in La Liga.
His renewal was not necessarily expected by the Catalan media but Barca have elected to bring him back for the 2019-20 season with an option to extend further for the 2020-21 campaign.
The club confirmed the news in a press release and said there would be a signing at the Camp Nou on Friday morning.
This season Barcelona are top of La Liga, leading rivals Real Madrid by six points.
They are also into the last 16 of the Champions League where they will face Ligue 1 side Lyon.
