Barcelona get three points to keep the wheels moving at the top of La Liga, but they made hard work of that. The defending Spanish champions didn't play well and Messi doesn't look fully fit. The difference between the two sides was a penalty kick towards the end of the first half.

- End of 2nd Half
FULL TIME: Barcelona 1-0 Real Valladolid
Masip stops Suarez AGAIN! That's three one-on-ones that the Real Valladolid goalkeeper has prevented from becoming a Barcelona goal. He has been the Man of the Match.
There's a certain tension around Camp Nou as we enter stoppage time. Barcelona's fans know just how devastating an equaliser in the final few minutes of this game would be.
Four minutes of stoppage time to be played at the end of the match.
Curler from Messi! That had to be very, very close. It was a trademark effort from Messi, buthe curls his left-footed effort from 20 yards out just wide of the far post. Masip was beaten.
Barcelona have coasted through the majority of this match, but there are just a few minutes left and Real Valladolid are still in the game. One chance is all it will take for an equaliser.
PENALTY SAVED! We've seen the Barcelona number 10 miss from the spot before, and he has missed here. Well, technically Masip saved it. The keeper guessed the right way, to his left side.
It was a lovely move from Barcelona that led to the penalty kick. There were some flicks and tricks between Coutinho and Suarez before the former was fouled by a sweeping challenge.
PENALTY KICK TO BARCELONA! It's a second spot kick for the Catalans. This time it's Coutinho brought down in the box.
Is punching down a good look?
- OffEnes ÜnalReal Valladolid
- OnKekoReal Valladolid
Real Valladolid make their final change and it's Keko who comes on. They're still in a game, here.
Inches wide from Roberto! Messi and the midfielder-turned-right back exchange passes 20 yards out from goal, with the latter getting the shot away. It beat Masip, but flashed past the post.
- OffToni VillaReal Valladolid
- OnStiven PlazaReal Valladolid
Villa has only been on the pitch a few minutes, but he has picked up an injury and has to be replaced.
This is not the sort of situation that Valverde would have wanted. Barcelona have a busy schedule coming up, but they are having to use their best players right until the end here.
- OffCarles AleñaFC Barcelona
- OnIvan RakiticFC Barcelona
Alena comes off and he will be replaced by Rakitic for the final 13 minutes of the match.
PICTURE: The Real Valladolid players unhappy after the award of the Barcelona penalty.
Big opportunity for two! Suarez misses another chance. Messi played a deep pass for Suarez, but from about six yards out the striker, for some reason, tries to pass it across goal.
- OffOusmane DembéléFC Barcelona
- OnPhilippe CoutinhoFC Barcelona
Valverde makes the change and it's Coutinho who comes on for the final 15 minutes. Dembele comes off.
- Yellow cardMíchelReal Valladolid
The yellow cards are racking up now, with Michel the latest to enter the book.
- OffDaniele VerdeReal Valladolid
- OnToni VillaReal Valladolid
Real Valladolid make a change. They still have a chance here and on comes Villa.
- Yellow cardLionel MessiFC Barcelona
Messi is shown a yellow card for dissent. He should have had a freekick, in fairness.
If Real Valladolid are going to find a way back into the game, you get the feeling it will come through Guardiola. He has been lively and has tested Ter Stegen with a couple of efforts.
Barcelona are now looking for the goal that would kill this game as a contest. As long as the scoreline stays 1-0, though, Real Valladolid have a chance. They have had opportunities.
Suarez should score! Barcelona win the ball high up the pitch, with Dembele playing through Suarez. However, Masip comes off his line to save and then saves from Messi as well.
PICTURE: Messi breaks the deadlock from the spot.
Real Valladolid are having some success in pushing the wing backs forward. Antonito and Nacho are being afforded freedom to get crosses into the Barcelona penalty area.
This hasn't been the best performance from Barcelona so far, but if they pick up three points and manage to rest some of their key players then that will be a job well done for them.
The addition of Boateng in January was meant to ease Barcelona's dependence on Suarez. However, the first hour of this match showed that they still need Suarez up front.
- OffKevin-Prince BoatengFC Barcelona
- OnLuis SuárezFC Barcelona
Indeed, there's the expected change and Suarez comes on for Boateng.
It looks like Suarez might be about to come on for Barcelona. Might that mean that Boateng's night is up? The Ghanaian has looked pretty shaky. Not the best performance.
Boateng was through! Messi played the pass through for his teammate, he tried to round Masip, but eventually ran out of pitch and then stumbled over his own feet. That wasn't great.
Alena is starting to have a real influence on this game. The young midfielder has forced his way into the first team fold at Barcelona in the past few weeks. He looks the real deal.
Barcelona have certainly upped the tempo and intensity of their play in this second half. They are creating more in front of goal. Real Valladolid need to find a way to counter this.
Big chance for Messi! That's not normally how that story ends. Dembele sets up Messi for the shot, he waits for the right moment... but then curls his shot wide of the goal. Close. He should have scored.
That was wild from Boateng. He is trying way too hard. He had options to his left and his right, but Boateng, from the best part of 30 yards, puts his shot well over the Valladolid bar.
What a save! Masip keeps the scoreline at just 1-0. Alba found Messi, the Argentinean directed a volley on target, but the Real Valladolid keeper tips the ball over his crossbar. Wow.
Shot wide! That was a half chance for Guardiola. He controlled the pass on the edge of the box and got the shot away quickly, but the ball bounced wide of the far post. Ter Stegen wasn't troubled.
Barcelona were well below par in the first half and only headed into the break with a 1-0 lead thanks to a dodgy penalty decision right at the end of the 45 minutes. They must improve.

- End of 1st Half
HALF TIME: Barcelona 1-0 Real Valladolid. Messi's penalty kick has given the Catalans the lead at the break, but they haven't been all that impressive. Valverde doesn't look too happy.
It was a hectic period of play that led to the penalty award to Barcelona. Real Valladolid were caught up the pitch and that created the space for the hosts on the rapid counter attack.
- Goal by penaltyLionel MessiFC Barcelona
GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAL! Barcelona 1 (43 mins - Lionel Messi pen) Real Valladolid 0. Just two minutes before half time, Barcelona have made the breakthrough. The penalty was a soft one, but Messi makes no mistake from the spot. Masip went the right way, but the shot was right into the corner of the net.
PENALTY KICK TO BARCELONA! The referee points to the spot after Pique is brought down in the box by Michel. The away players aren't happy at all.
Messi... just wide! The Barcelona number 10 creates the space for the shot on the edge of the box, but his curling effort takes a deflection and flashes just wide of the far post.
There have been questions over Messi's fitness of late and on this showing, and on his performance against Athletic Club last week, it's not looking great. He's still not fully fit.
Fernandez clatters into the back of Boateng and Barcelona have a chance to swing a freekick into the box. The delivery from Messi isn't a good one, though. Something is off.
- Yellow cardAnuarReal Valladolid
Something happened! Anuar becomes the second Real Valladolid player to enter the book, shown yellow for a late tackle on Busquets.
Still nothing happening.
Still nothing happening.
Let's be entirely truthful - this has been a dreadful game so far. Very little of any note has happened. Barcelona are seeing the majority of the ball, but Valladolid look comfortable.
It almost feels like Boateng is trying just a bit too much. This time he attempted to take on one too many players when he should have looked for a Barcelona teammate with a pass.
This system from Real Valladolid is working well. They are playing a back five, but it's a narrow back five. They are keeping it tight in the middle and allowing Barca space out wide.
It's just not happening for Boateng at the moment. He is attempting to drop off his marker in order to create space for Dembele and Messi, but his touch hasn't been very good.
Valverde doesn't look very happy on the touchline. Barcelona have been quite slow and sluggish in the opening half hour of this match. They need to up the tempo and intensity of things.
This has been a strange display by Barcelona so far. It's not that they are playing poorly. It's just that they are struggling to open up spaces whenever they get into the final third.
There have been a few openings, but we're still waiting for our real chance of the match to break the deadlock. Real Valladolid will be pleased with how things have gone so far.
Good move! Nice football from Real Valladolid on the edge of the Barcelona box, with Guardiola receiving the one-two. But he runs into Pique before he can get the shot away.
It says a lot that Coutinho has been left on the bench for this game by Valverde. The Brazilian is really struggling to find form. He is becoming a real issue for the Spanish champions.
Dembele shot blocked! Messi dribbles around the edge of the box and tees up the French winger for the shot from about 10 yards out, but his effort is charged down by Fernandez.
PICTURE: Ronaldo at Camp Nou for tonight's game.
That's unlike Alba. The Barcelona left back was played to the byline down the left side, but he over hit his cross and the ball drifts behind for a goal kick to the away side. Wasteful.
That was an opportunity for Dembele to create something on the edge of the Valladolid box down the left side, but he was crowded out by opponents. Just a little sluggish.
It just feels like Barcelona are feeling their way into this match at the moment. They have been the better of the two teams, but they aren't really creating much in the way of chances.
- Yellow cardEnes ÜnalReal Valladolid
There's the first yellow card of the match and it has been shown to Unal.
The gap between Barcelona at the top of La Liga and Real Madrid in second place stands at just six points after recent results, so Barca need to keep their pace going.
That was encouraging moment for Boateng. Yes, the shot from him was tame in the end, but the movement was good and he showed a decent understanding with Messi. Positive.
First shot on target! Messi plays the through ball for Boateng, who gets the effort away from a fairly tight angle. It was straight at Masip and the Valladolid goalkeeper makes the save.
Alena has been given a start by Valverde this evening. The young midfielder has forced his way into the first team reckoning in recent weeks. He's very highly rated at Barcelona.
There have been some injury concerns over Messi of late, but the Argentinean has had a week to rest up since that draw away to Athletic Club. He looks quite lively early on.
Many have drawn comparisons between Boateng and Paulinho. Different positions, but Paulinho's signing was also derided and yet he proved to be a valuable figure for Barcelona.
This has been a strong start to the match by the away side. Real Valladolid create some problems in the Barcelona penalty area with a couple of corner kicks. Some pressure on the hosts.
This is a big opportunity for Boateng to show what he can offer Barcelona. His other start came away to Sevilla, when Messi was rested. This is a better chance for him to make a mark.
Barcelona have dropped points in their last two Liga games. Last week away to Athletic Club, they looked weary. That was an issue for Barca last season. Is history repeating itself?

Okay, here we go. About to get started at Camp Nou. Kick off is just seconds away.
Barcelona have Lyon in the last 16 of the Champions League during the week and so that could explain some of the changes made by Valverde.
Real Valladolid are struggling so far this season. They were only promoted last season, so that is understandable.

No Suarez! Valverde has rotated his Barcelona squad a little for this match. Suarez has been left on the bench, but Boateng, signed in January, has been given just his second start.
