That was more of a grind than Simeone surely would have wanted, but Atletico Madrid get over the line and they start their league campaign with a win for the first time since 2015. Felix and Trippier were both impressive, although Atleti should have finished off the job long before they did.

- End of 2nd Half
FULL TIME: Atletico Madrid 1-0 Getafe
Just one minute left to play at the Metropolitano. Is there one last opportunity left in this match? Getafe certainly haven't given up hope, but the clock is now against them.
Savic goes down after taking a shot to the middle of the head, but the Atletico Madrid defender is back on his feet. The hosts are edging that little bit closer to an opening weekend win.
Four minutes of stoppage time will be played at the end of the match.
Vitolo was through! An Atletico Madrid counter attack sees Morata send Vitolo through on goal, but his second touch let him down and that allowed Soria to make the save! That was the chance to end this.
These are some nervy moments for Atletico Madrid. They have been in control for the majority of the match, but this 1-0 lead is a precarious one and Getafe are still in this!
Off the crossbar! Inches away from an equaliser for Getafe! That's easily the closest they have come to finding the back of the net. Angel unleashes a strike from 20 yards out and the ball crashes off the woodwork.
We were told that Atletico Madrid had changed their identity over the summer, and they have played an open game. But they are four minutes away from a 1-0 win at home. Familiar.
Into the wall! That was an opportunity for Getafe to test Oblak for the first time in the match, but Fajr sends his freekick effort into the wall. It was tough for him to get it up and down from that distance.
- Yellow cardSaúlAtlético Madrid
That's a high foot from Saul on the edge of his own box and he is shown a yellow card.
Is there one last twist left in this match? Given the way they have played large spells of this game, Simeone will surely be disappointed that Atletico Madrid only have a one-goal advantage.
- OffJaime MataGetafe CF
- OnEnric GallegoGetafe CF
Gallego will have 10 minutes to make the difference for Getafe.
There has been so much drama already on the opening weekend of the 2019/20 La Liga season. Barcelona lost to Athletic Club, Real Madrid beat Celta Vigo... is there one last twist here?
- Yellow cardAllan NyomGetafe CF
Nyom picks up a yellow card for a cynical foul on Vitolo. No complaints about that one.
PICTURE: A lot will be expected of Felix this season.
Indeed, there is definitely a nervousness around the Metropolitano now. Atletico Madrid have certainly been the better of the two teams, but they have only managed to score once.
Lemar was Atletico Madrid's big summer signing last term and he didn't really deliver in his first season at the club. More will be expected of him this season. He wasn't that great this evening.
- OffThomas LemarAtlético Madrid
- OnVitoloAtlético Madrid
A third and final change from Simeone and it's Vitolo who comes on for Lemar.
Simeone is out in his technical area is gesturing to the Atletico Madrid supporters inside the Metropolitano to get behind their team. It's all gone a little bit quiet in the last 10 minutes or so.
Lemar miscontrols a simple pass when Atletico Madrid were looking to build an attack and there are a few sighs around the Metropolitano. He still has a lot to prove to win his doubters over.
It's a mark of how much business Atletico Madrid did over the summer that very little has been made of their signing of Llorente from Real Madrid. He is such a talented, young midfielder.
PICTURE: Still the only goal of the game...
- OffJoão FélixAtlético Madrid
- OnMarcos LlorenteAtlético Madrid
Indeed, Felix's impressive La Liga debut is over and on comes Llorente in his place.
Felix down! This could be an issue for the Portuguese teenager. Felix appeared to pick up an ankle knock and while this doesn't look too serious, Simeone isn't taking any chances.
- OffDamián SuárezGetafe CF
- OnÁngelGetafe CF
Getafe make another change and it's Angel who comes on for Suarez.
That changes means that Saul will move back into the centre of midfield with Hermoso taking over at left back. Saul will be happy about that. We all know he doesn't like being played at full back...
- OffThomas ParteyAtlético Madrid
- OnMario HermosoAtlético Madrid
Simeone makes his first change of the match and Hermoso comes on for Thomas.
We should all be wary of hyping up a teenager too much, but there's a real sense that Felix could be the next best player in world football. He has so much talent it's a bit unfair.
We didn't see all that much from Felix in the first half, but we have seen real signs of his brilliance since the restart. That run was astonishing and really deserved to be marked with a goal.
Another Soria save! Savic got on the end of the corner kick delivery into the penalty area, but Soria made the stop just moments after he saved a spot kick from Morata. Big moments.
MORATA MISSES! The Atletico Madrid striker, who already has a goal to his name this evening, but sees his penalty kick saved by Soria! Morata went for power, it wasn't a bad effort, but what a diving save!
PENALTY KICK TO ATLETICO MADRID! The hosts will have a chance to double their advantage after Felix goes past three, runs 30 yards and is felled inside the penalty box! What a run!
Thomas has played a decent game so far. The midfielder has been dropping deep to pick up the ball and he has been the one driving things forward for Atletico Madrid. Influential.
The match has closed up a little bit since the two red card. Of course, that goes against the grain of what you might expect, but both teams are being slightly more conservative.
Here's a statistic for you - Simeone's record over eight seasons as Atletico Madrid manager against Getafe, in terms of goals is... 30-0. Rather impressive. And one-sided.
Saul complained a number of times last season about being played at left back. On the first day of the new season, he has ended up there again after the dismissal of Lodi. Cruel.
- Yellow cardFaycal FajrGetafe CF
The referee has his yellow card out again and this time it's shown to Fajr.
PICTURE: Morata's header is the difference between the two teams.
Just a reminder that both teams are down to 10 men. Molina was sent off after a VAR review and then moments later Lodi was shown back-to-back yellows within about 60 seconds.
- OffLeandro CabreraGetafe CF
- OnRaúl GarcíaGetafe CF
Getafe have made a change. Cabrera was a yellow card and so Garcia, a summer signing from Girona, comes on in his place.
- 2nd Half
The second half is under way! Atletico Madrid have a 1-0 lead over Getafe in this La Liga fixture.
What did you make of the first half at the Metropolitano? Was the referee right to show a red card to both teams? Has Trippier been the best player on the pitch for the home side? Tweet me!
- End of 1st Half
HALF TIME: Atletico Madrid 1-0 Getafe. Morata's goal from Trippier's cross is the difference between the two teams after 45 minutes, but that just scratches the surface of what happened in the first half.
Just one minute of stoppage time to be played at the end of the first half.
So that was a crazy couple of minutes. The end result is that both teams have been reduced to 10 men. Atletico Madrid had a man advantage for roughly two minutes before they too had a man dismissed.
- Red cardRenan LodiAtlético Madrid
SENT OFF! Lodi has been shown two yellow cards in the space of about a minute! This game has gone bananas! It was an aerial challenge between Lodi and Suarez. That also looks harsh! Wow.
- Yellow cardRenan LodiAtlético Madrid
Now Lodi has been booked for a foul. That also looked to be harsh on the Atletico Madrid left back.
There's a comparison to be drawn between the red card shown to Modric yesterday and this one. Both seem harsh to me, but at the very least you can argue that the referees are being consistent.
- Red cardJorge MolinaGetafe CF
SENT OFF! The referee has changed his mind and has withdrawn the yellow card shown to Molina for the foul on Thomas, instead flashing the red card to the veteran Getafe striker!
VAR REVIEW! This is interesting. The referee is looking at the VAR monitor. Might he change his mind and show a red card to Molina for the foul on Thomas? This is a big moment for Getafe.
Molina becomes the second Getafe player to enter the referee's book.
PICTURE: There's a new assists king in the Spanish capital.
This is slightly better from Getafe. Saul fouls Molina to give away a freekick in a dangerous position, but the delivery from Fajr fails to beat the first man. Morata makes the clearance.
Molina goes down! The Getafe striker was looking for a penalty kick as he turned back inside, but the replays show that there was no contact between Molina and Felix. No penalty.
Getafe have struggled to create much in the attacking third so far. That was an opportunity for them to whip a freekick into the box, but it bounced beyond everyone and out for a goal kick.
The TV cameras show Costa on the Atletico Madrid bench. He was looking very trim in pre-season before he picked up an injury. There is a new hunger from a lot of these Atleti players.
Cucurella surely should have been shown a yellow card there? He pulled back Lodi cynically as the Atletico Madrid left back looked to launch a counter attack for the home side.
Trippier has been arguably the best player on the pitch for Atletico Madrid in the opening 30 minutes of this match, but Lodi on the other side has also made a solid start to his Liga career.
Morata is off the mark for the 2019/20 season. He will be fighting with Costa to be Atletico Madrid's first choice centre forward and as things stand the former Juventus man has the edge.
Trippier has started this match well and now he has his first assist as an Atletico Madrid player. His delivery will be a real asset for Atleti this season. What a crosser of the ball.
The Metropolitano erupted with the scoring of that opening goal. They were waiting for the breakthrough for the party begin. What an atmosphere in the Spanish capital this evening.
- GoalÁlvaro MorataAtlético Madrid
GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAL! Atletico Madrid 1 (25 mins - Alvaro Morata) Getafe 0. It's an opener for Atletico Madrid and it has come from a Trippier cross into the box! We know he has that in his locker. The former Spurs man whipped a delivery into the penalty area and Morata was on hand to guide the ball into the back of the net with a header.
That was a sensational pass from Saul with the outside of his right boot. It split the Getafe defence wide open. What vision that was from the Atletico Madrid central midfielder.
Trippier down the right! A Saul pass found the Atletico Madrid full back down the wing, Morata and Felix were waiting for the delivery in the middle, but the low cross is gathered by Soria.
PICTURE: All eyes on one man (kid).
Felix has had the one goalscoring opportunity so far, but it must be said that he has so far struggled to get himself involved in the general play. Getafe giving him a lot of attention.
- Yellow cardLeandro CabreraGetafe CF
Cabrera picks up the first yellow card of the night for going through the back of Felix.
The quicker pace that Atletico Madrid are attempting to play at is noticeable. Simeone wants more, certainly something different, from his team this season and that is showing.
Of course, it should be noted that while Atletico Madrid spent big they also lost Griezmann and Rodri in the summer. Two players that will prove difficult to replace this season.
Felix denied by Soria! That was the first sight of goal for the Portuguese teenager. Morata played him in behind the opposition defence, but the goalkeeper came off his line to save Felix's effort on the stretch.
The home supporters are chanting for Luis Aragones. The Atletico Madrid supporters are fundraising for a statue of the legendary manager to be built outside the Metropolitano.
It's been a positive start from Atletico Madrid. They are the ones controlling the game early on here. However, the hosts have yet to create a clear-cut goalscoring opportunity.
Trippier was an interesting signing for Atleti. Simeone is a defensive-minded coach, but he likes the width to come from his full backs and so this might be a very good fit for the Englishman.
Felix isn't the only summer signing making his Atleti debut tonight...
Great Trippier pass! That was a lovely idea from the former Spurs right back. He attempted to play a quick pass in behind the Getafe defence, but Cucurella was back to sweep up.
Of course, it's all eyes on Felix this evening. He was made the most expensive teenager in football history over the summer, with Atletico Madrid paying a whopping £113m for him. Ooft!
Getafe enjoyed a hugely successful season last term, finishing fifth and only just missing out on fourth. The Europa League games will really test their squad this season, though.
It should be noted that Simeone attempted to do something similar last season, but reverted back to his default after a poor start to the campaign. Will he stick with it this time?
While in the past Atletico Madrid have been renowned for their defensive organisation and never say die attitude, Simeone now wants to turn them into a more progressive, proactive outfit.
Atleti made a number of big name signings over the summer, but a few of the old guard left the club too. Most notably, Godin and Filipe were moved on as Simeone built this new team.
This feels like the start of a new era at Atletico Madrid. Simeone might still be in the dugout, as he has been for the past eight seasons, but he is trying to build something different.
- 1st Half
The match is under way! It's Atletico Madrid against Getafe on the opening weekend of La Liga.
Okay, here we are. We are about to get started at the Metropolitano. Kick off is just moments away.
It's the usual AC/DC-themed light show at the Metropolitano before kick off. This is either terrible or fantastic. I can't make my mind up.
The two teams are in the tunnel ready to walk out at the stadium that hosted last season's Champions League final.
Not long until kick off at the Metropolitano. There is a lot of anticipation ahead of this one. A lot is expected of Atletico Madrid this season, but this won't be an easy way to open their campaign.
Can lightning strike twice? Getafe enjoyed a wonderful season last term, only just missing out on qualifying for the Champions League. Can they keep up those sorts of levels this season?
I'm Graham Ruthven and you can catch me on Twitter ahead of the match to let me know your thoughts. What sort of season will Atletico Madrid have? How big an impact will Felix make? Tweet me!
The start of something? Simeone has spent much of the summer giving his Atletico Madrid team a new identity. He wants them to play in a different way this season. Has he succeeded?
