Saul is shown a yellow card. Atletico Madrid are now doing all they can to wind down the clock. Alaves come forward in search of a late, late equaliser. Doesn't look to be coming.
Atletico Madrid are just two minutes of stoppage time away from a huge win in the context of their season. This hasn't been convincing, but the home team won't care!
There will be four minutes of stoppage time played at the end of the match.
That could be a defining moment in Atletico Madrid's season. Barcelona and Real Madrid would have been breathing down their necks had Alaves snatched something here!
OBLAK SAVES! What a moment in Atletico Madrid's season! Joselu struck the penalty kick well, but Oblak went the right way and had a strong enough arm to palm it around the post!
PENALTY KICK TO ALAVES! The referee has pointed to the spot after a VAR check. There was an elbow from Savic into the face of Rioja!
VAR check! This could be a worry for Atletico Madrid. Savic looked to put his arm into the face of Rioja inside the penalty area! The referee has gone over to the monitor to take a look!
The benefit of being knocked out of the Champions League for Atletico Madrid is that they will have more time to rest and recuperate between league fixtures. That could be a factor in the title race.
Of course, after this it’s the international break and Atletico Madrid will have to wait two weeks to play their next fixture which is a tricky test away to Sevilla on April 4.

- OnBorja SainzDeportivo Alavés
Another change for the away side and Borja Sainz is on for the final 10 minutes.
Carrasco is shown a yellow card and that means he will now miss the trip to Sevilla next time out!
PICTURE: Suarez broke the deadlock
Suarez has been impressive for Atletico Madrid this season and is on course to score 20 goals in La Liga. He scored his 19th of the campaign here and it could be one of his most important.
In Oblak, Atletico Madrid boast one of the best goalkeepers in the European game, but the Slovenian might have done better with Ziyech’s goal in the Champions League loss to Chelsea.

And Saul is also on off the bench for Atletico Madrid as they try to see this out.

In fact, not since January have Atletico Madrid scored more than twice in a single La Liga match. They have lost their creative spark and cutting edge in front of goal recently.
Goals have become something of a problem for Atletico Madrid over the last month or so. Last time out in La Liga they failed to find the back of the net against struggling Getafe.
Atletico Madrid are unbeaten in 36 of their last 38 La Liga games, but they have dropped points in five of their last eight fixtures. Simeone’s side need to get back to winning ways here!
Alaves have the quality to cause Atletico Madrid problems at the back. We've already seen this! Joselu, primarily, is someone who has a track record of scoring against the biggest and best teams in Spain. Can they create more?
Atletico Madrid need to rediscover the swagger that made them so difficult to beat earlier in the season They need to find a way to tighten things up at the back. Conceding too many. Been better in this second half.
Great save by Pacheco! Atletico Madrid come close to a second goal with the Alaves goalkeeper tipping a strike from Llorente on to the crossbar! Brilliant from Pacheco to keep that out!
Trippier is back on his feet and is back on the pitch. He looks fine to continue although Simeone will keep his eye on the England international. He's so important to Atleti.
Trippier injury! The one concern for Atletico Madrid after that goal is that Trippier has yet to get back to his feet after taking a sore one as he delivered the cross for Suarez's header.
GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAL! Atletico Madrid 1 (54 mins - Luis Suarez) Alaves 0. The breakthrough has been broken! Trippier delivers the cross into the box, Suarez gets in front of his marker and glances a header into the far corner of the net via the inside of the post! What a huge goal that could be for Atletico Madrid!
On the other side of the defence, Carrasco has been a success story for Atletico Madrid this season. The Belgian has been converted into a wing back having previously been a winger.
The return of Trippier from suspension has strengthened Atleti on the right side of the pitch. The England international is crucial to the way Simeone feeds the ball into his attackers.
Suspension means Felix is out of the spotlight this weekend, but this summer transfer window could see him presented with something of a career crossroads. Should he leave?
Felix was lively in the Champions League defeat to Chelsea during the week, but that only raised more questions over whether he is at the wrong club. Is Atleti an awkward fit for him?
Questions have been asked of Felix recently. The Portuguese attacker started the season well, but Simeone appears to have lost faith in him, benching him for some big matches.
Simeone needs to see more from his Atletico Madrid players in this second period. They were poor in the first half and struggled to create much in the way of scoring opportunities.
The second half is under way! It's still goalless between Atletico Madrid and Alaves in this La Liga fixture!
- End of 1st Half
HALF TIME: Atletico Madrid 0-0 Alaves. The hosts have looked shaky at the back and Alaves have created a couple opportunities. Simeone needs to get more out of his players.
This stoppage time is to compensate for the delay in checking the penalty incident through VAR. It doesn't feel like either team is going to use it to create a chance, though.
There will be two minutes of stoppage time played at the end of the first half.
Simeone will want a lot more from his players in the second half. This is a must-win match for Atletico Madrid. They need to keep moving forward in the title race at the top of La Liga.
With just two minutes left of the first half, Atletico Madrid are finally on top of things and pressing for the breakthrough. This time, Savic couldn't meat Carrasco's cross into the box.
At long last, Atletico Madrid are starting to pose an attacking threat in this match. They have been far too passive for the majority of this first half. Need to push up the pitch.
SUAREZ... inches wide! The Atletico Madrid forward drives to the edge of the box with the ball at his feet and gets the low strike away, but his effort flashes just wide of the near post!
- Yellow cardJotaDeportivo Alavés
It should be noted that Jota picked up the game's first yellow card moments ago.
Lemar starts in the centre of midfield for Atletico Madrid once again. The Frenchman has enjoyed a better season so far, but Simeone surely still wants more from the 25-year-old.
Correa shoots wide! Llorente does enough to hold up the ball for Correa, but the Atletico Madrid forward could only shoot wide of the far post. He was losing his balance in the process.
Pons takes on the shot! A long throw-in is partially cleared to the edge of the box, Pons meets it on the volley, his connection isn't clean, but Oblak still has to make the diving save!
That was a waste! Atletico Madrid win a freekick in a dangerous position on the edge of the box, but the delivery from Carrasco is poor and Alaves have no trouble clearing it.
Correa partners Suarez in attack this evening. He brings a lot of energy to the Atletico Madrid frontline, but needs to add more goals to his game. That’s his big weakness.
Tipped over the bar! Savic almost caught out Pacheco there! Was that a shot or a cross? Either way, Pacheco had to track back and tip the ball over his own crossbar for the corner kick.
Alaves have conceded at least three goals in their last three games away from home. Atletico Madrid should really be aiming to win this match convincingly to make a statement.
For Alaves, this season is about survival. They are currently slumped in 19th place near the foot of the La Liga table. Alaves need points wherever they can find them to stay up.
Everything is just bouncing off Suarez at the moment. The Uruguayan has yet to find his first touch. Atletico Madrid need him to hold on to the ball longer than he is right now.
That last chance will be concerning to Simeone. There have been two chances in this game so far and both have them have been produced by Alaves. Atleti still to get going.
Big chance for Joselu! That could and perhaps should have been the opening goal! Alaves win the ball high up the field, Pons feeds Joselu, but his shot is blocked by Savic on the stretch!
PICTURE: No early breakthrough
One thing to take into account when analysing Atletico Madrid’s poor form of late is that they have had 15 players out at one point or another after testing positive for the coronavirus.
Indeed, there is a sense that if Atletico Madrid are to win their first league title since 2014 they’re going to stumble over the line. They have made a habit of dropping points.
While Atletico Madrid once had a commanding lead at the top of the Spanish top flight, that advantage has dwindled over the last two months. Now they have Barca and Real Madrid on their tail!
That was one of those penalty calls that surely would have been given earlier in the season before they changed the law. Even still, there's a sense Alaves got away with one!
NO PENALTY KICK! Edgar had his hand above his head when challenging for an aerial ball, and the ball certainly struck his arm, but the referee has decided it didn't warrant a spot kick!
The referee is going to have a closer look at the pitch-side monitor...
Penalty claim! The Atletico Madrid players believe they should have a spot kick here. They spotted a handball by Edgar and the referee does indeed have a big decision to make.
Atletico Madrid have yet to find their flow here. They are feeling their way into the contest. A lack of tempo and intensity from both teams in the opening 10 minutes.
However, the focus quickly shifted to La Liga again after the defeat at Stamford Bridge with Koke describing this match against Alaves as “a final.” There’s a lot riding on this one.
Indeed, Atletico Madrid were poor in both legs against Chelsea. They looked like a team who weren't sure what their game plan was. Fans are entitled to feel Atleti should have done better.
Pellestri over the bar! The on-loan Manchester United winger gets on the end of a delivery into the area, but he scoops his right-footed effort over the target. That was a chance!
Atletico Madrid come into this match on the back of a disappointing exit from the last 16 of the Champions League at the hands of Chelsea. Simeone’s side were underwhelming.
Decent cross! Navarro gets down the right wing and plays a dangerous ball into the box, but Atletico Madrid have plenty of numbers back to make the clearance. A warning sign, though.
Pellestri has been handed a place in the Alaves lineup this afternoon. This is the first time the on-loan Manchester United winger has started since making the move in January.
What sort of match will we get this afternoon? You're never quite sure what kind of performance Atletico Madrid are going to produce. They have unpredictable in recent weeks.
The match is under way! It's Atletico Madrid against Alaves in this La Liga fixture!
Okay, here we go. We are about to get under way at the Wanda Metropolitano. Kick off is coming up shortly.
The players are out on the playing surface. Looks to be a pleasant afternoon in the Spanish capital.
Not long until kick off at the Wanda Metropolitano. We will learn a lot about this Atleti team this evening.
The scene at the Wanda!
At the other end of the table, Alaves need points merely to stay in La Liga. They are clear underdogs this afternoon, but Levante came away with a win from the Wanda recently!
Three points is a necessity for Atletico Madrid here. Simeone's side have allowed their lead at the top of La Liga to diminish in recent weeks. They must keep putting one foot in front of the other.
I'm Graham Ruthven and you can catch me on Twitter ahead of the match to let me know your thoughts. How important is this game for Atletico Madrid in the title race? Tweet me - @grahamruthven!
No Felix! There's no sign of Felix in the Atletico Madrid starting lineup this evening. The Portuguese forward is out through suspension and so Correa comes into the team for the home side.
