VALVERDE... wide! Mendy's cross from the left causes mayhem in the area, the ball bounces around a bit and falls to Valverde six yards out, but he prods his finish wide of the post.

Simon saves from Vinicius! That was the closest Real Madrid have come to opening the scoring, with the Athletic Club goalkeeper making the save to prevent Vinicius from finding the net.

Over the top! Yeray gets on the end of a corner kick delivery into the area, but he could only head over the Real Madrid crossbar and the Athletic defender gets back to his position.

Vazquez kept his place in the lineup for this evening. He has earned himself a reputation as one of Zidane’s favourites over the years, but the winger delivers for his manager when he needs him.

Vinicius over the bar! The Brazilian winger cuts inside off the left side to get the shot away, but that was never going to test Simon. Miles over the bar. Needs to be much better.

Casemiro is suspended for this evening’s match after picking up a booking in the derby win at the weekend and so it’s Valverde who is playing instead of the Brazilian. Not a bad replacement.

It’s not just Modric who has been in excellent form in the centre of the pitch for Real Madrid. Casemiro and Kroos have also upped their game in recent weeks. Casemiro was brilliant against Atleti.
