It took Villarreal a long time to get going, but they deserved a point in the end. Real Madrid were well on top in the first half, but they failed to make the most of their dominance and grew weary after half time. This isn't a terrible result for Los Blancos, but a missed opportunity, certainly.

- End of 2nd Half
FULL TIME: Villarreal 1-1 Real Madrid
- Yellow cardToni KroosReal Madrid
Kroos is shown a late yellow card and that might be that.
Big chance for Kubo! What a story that would have been! The angle was a tight one for Kubo, but the opportunity was a good one! Courtois came off his line to smother the shot from the Japanese forward!
There will be three minutes of stoppage time played at the end of the match.
Kubo comes on for the final few minutes. Can he make a good impression against his parent club?
Another change for Real Madrid and Asensio comes on for Mariano.
While Real Madrid have looked very tired in this second half, Modric is still going. He is still making things happen for Los Blancos. What an engine the Croatian has on him.
In the end, Chukwueze takes on too many opposition defenders and is crowded out on the edge of the penalty box. He looks dangerous every time he gets on the ball.
The introduction of Chukwueze has changed this game for Villarreal. He is giving Real Madrid all sorts of problems. If Villarreal are going to score a second, you suspect it'll be through him.
Varane gets back! Just for a moment, it seemed Moreno had all the time in the world to pick his spot, but Varane used his pace to great effect to get back and make the intervention.
This match is now finely poised as a contest. It could go either way. Real Madrid are starting to press forward a bit more now, but they have been lacklustre in this second half.
Villarreal have been much better in this second half, but Real Madrid have allowed them to come back into the game. In hindsight, they needed to score more than once in the first half.
- Goal by penaltyGerardVillarreal CF
GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAL! Villarreal 1 (76 mins - Gerard Moreno) Real Madrid 1. Moreno steps up to the 12-yard mark and finds the bottom corner of the Real Madrid net! Courtois went the right way, but there was no way the Belgian goalkeeper was going to get there. Villarreal deserved that goal! They are back on level terms!
PENALTY KICK TO VILLARREAL! Courtois brings down Chukwueze and the referee has an easy decision! He points to the spot!
The dynamic of this match has changed in the last 20 minutes or so. Villarreal are well on top now as Celtic start to look weary. The changes off the bench haven't really helped.
PAREJO... wide! That should have been an equaliser for Villarreal. Estupinan got down the left wing, to the byline, squared the pass back into the middle, but Parejo sends his shot wide of the target!
- Yellow cardNachoReal Madrid
Nacho is shown a yellow card. Real Madrid finally look to be under some pressure. Tiring.
- OffMartin ØdegaardReal Madrid
- OnIscoReal Madrid
A second Real Madrid substitution and it's Isco on for the away side.

... now it's Real Madrid's turn to make a change. Vinicius comes on.

- OffCarlos BaccaVillarreal CF
- OnSamuel ChukwuezeVillarreal CF
Time for some changes from the home side. On comes Chukwueze...
Moreno shoots wide! Kroos gets away with one! His pass out from the back was blocked, the pass was played in behind for Moreno, but the Villarreal striker flashes wide of the far post.
While Real Madrid were very bright in their first half performance, they are starting to show signs of weariness. Zidane will have to make some changes here, I suspect.
PICTURE: Hazard has been quiet
Mariano has given Real Madrid some real goal threat. The Spanish striker has barely featured for Los Blancos over the last two seasons, but he is staking a claim for more game time this afternoon.
Shot over the bar! Vazquez is set up on the edge of the Villarreal penalty area, but the Real Madrid winger sends his effort over the crossbar with a left-footed strike. Should have done better.
This was the goal...
What will the second half hold? Surely Villarreal will be a lot better in this period? They were dreadful in the opening 45 minutes and were fortunate not to concede more than just one.
- 2nd Half
The second half is under way! Real Madrid have a 1-0 lead over Villrreal in this La Liga fixture.
What did you make of the first half at the Estadio de la Ceramica? Does Emery need to make changes to his team? Has Mariano proven a point to Zidane? Tweet me your thoughts!
HALF TIME: Villarreal 0-1 Real Madrid. Mariano's goal after three minutes is the difference between the two sides. Villarreal can't be any worse in the second period. Really poor.
There will be one minute of stoppage time played at the end of the first half.
Will Zidane come to regret his side not making the most of their dominance in the first half of this match? Surely Villarreal won't be as lethargic as this after the half time interval.
The midfield unit of Kroos, Modric and Odegaard has controlled this match for Real Madrid so far. We felt they might miss Casemiro, but no sign of that so far in the contest.
Emery will surely have a lot to say to his players at the half time interval. Villarreal have been very lethargic. They have struggled to move the ball up the pitch, into the opposition half.
Varane has struggled at times this season, and in the Champions League last season, without Ramos alongside him, but the Frenchman has looked assured so far this afternoon.
For all that Real Madrid have seen the majority of the ball in this first half, Hazard has really struggled to get himself involved. Much of the play going down the right flank instead.
Villarreal need to try and test Courtois. The Real Madrid goalkeeper hasn't had to make a single save in this first half. The home team have been toothless in the attacking third.
Mariano has been the best player on the pitch in this first half. The striker, who has barely featured for Real Madrid over the last two seasons, is making a good impression.
Off the post! Vazquez's shot from outside the box was charged down, the ball then spun through to Mariano. He strikes the post with a low shot, but the flag was up against the striker.
That last pass from Odegaard will have encouraged Zidane. It showed the Norwegian is starting to understand how he has to play deeper for Real Madrid than he did for Real Sociedad.
Into the side netting! Odegaard finds the run of Carvajal with an incredible ball in behind, but the Real Madrid right back could only find the side netting with his shot on the stretch.
Modric is controlling this game from deep for Real Madrid. The Croatian is so important to what Los Blancos do as a team. They will miss him when he's gone. What a player.
Vazquez wins a freekick on the right side. The winger is still one of Zidane's favourites. His versatility is clearly valued. Vazquez has been playing at right wing back recently!
Zidane will have been pleased with how his side started this match, but he surely wants them to push on from that. Real Madrid have allowed Villarreal back into the contest.
Hazard has been quiet early on here. The Belgian has struggled for fitness this season, but he should be well rested having played no part for Belgium over the international break.
Villarreal don't look so open at the back. They were fortunate to only concede once in the opening 10 minutes such was the extent of Real Madrid's dominance. Still in this.
First chance for Villarreal! The cross was teased into the Real Madrid box from the right side, Parejo got on the end of it, but the former Valencia playmaker heads his effort over the crossbar.
He might have found the back of the net after three minutes, but Mariano has struggled for service since scoring. Real Madrid playing the majority of their game in the midfield.
Villarreal are now working a bit harder than they were in the opening 10 minutes. It was almost as if they they were caught cold early on, with Real Madrid overwhelming them.
Good defending from Varane. The ball was played down the channel for Bacca, but the Real Madrid centre back came across to close the angle and make the block for a corner kick.
Of course, Real Madrid come into this game on the back of a damaging defeat to Valencia at Mestalla before the international break. They were so defensively vulnerable in that match.
Real Madrid have really missed Carvajal in recent weeks. The right back is back in the team this afternoon and it only took him three minutes to show why he's so important. Good assist.
This is a little better from Villarreal. They have struggled in the opening 10 minutes of this match, but Emery's side are finally enjoying some possession in and around the midfield.
PICTURE: An early goal for Mariano
Hazard is back in the Real Madrid side this afternoon. Therer had been some signs a few weeks ago that he was starting to find some form and fitness after a staggered start to the season.
This has been a good start for Real Madrid. They look the fresher of the two teams. They are the ones controlling the ball. Villarreal are having to do a lot of chasing right now.
You have to admire how Mariano makes the most of the very few opportunities he is handed by Zidane. There's an argument to make that he should receive more game time.
The Villarreal players are unhappy, and they have some justification to be so. The flag went up very quickly from the linesman and so a number of defenders stopped the game.
GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAL! Villarreal 0 Real Madrid 1 (3 mins - Mariano Diaz). Controversy! The flag was raised when Carvajal played the pass in behind. However, the ball was blocked, it came back to the Real Madrid full back who found Mariano with a cross into the middle. The striker then glanced home a header and the goal stands!
Real Madrid are without Casemiro and Valverde in the centre of the pitch this afternoon. Odegaard comes into the team. The Norwegian has a point to prove after a tough start to the campaign.
The match is under way! It's Villarreal against Real Madrid in this La Liga fixture!
Okay, here we go. We are about to get started at the Estadio de la Ceramica. Kick off is just moments away.
Kubo is on the bench for Villarreal this afternoon. The youngster is on loan from Real Madrid this season. There is a lot of excitement around him.
Zidane was once renowned for being excellent at getting results after the international break. He's won just one of his last four games after internationals, though.
Not long until kick off at the Estadio de la Ceramica. Real Madrid are without Benzema, Casemiro AND Ramos this afternoon. That is a lot of experience to be without for one match.
Hazard is in the Real Madrid starting lineup. This feels like a third fresh start for the Belgian since he joined from Chelsea last year. Injuries have been a real issue for him in Spain.
I'm Graham Ruthven and you can catch me on Twitter ahead of the match to let me know your thoughts. What do you think of the changes by Zidane to his team today? Tweet me!
Changes! Zidane has rotated his Real Madrid team for this tricky away day against Villarreal. Mariano is leading the line for Los Blancos with Odegaard back in the starting lineup.
