FULL TIME: Real Madrid 0-0 Villarreal

It looks like Villarreal will now settle for a point, but Real Madrid aren't about to give up. They are camped on the edge of the opposition box. Will there be one last chance?

Torres heads over! That was a half-chance for Villarreal to snatch all three points, but Torres heads over at the near post from a corner kick. Is that the last opportunity?

There will be four minutes of stoppage time played at the end of the match.

Pena goes down! The Villarreal player was through on goal, he hits the ground under the challenge of Nacho, but the referee points to the ball. No penalty kick! Correct decision.

Isco header is blocked! Just for a second, it looked like Isco was going to head into the back of the net from eight yards out, but the block is made and then Rulli makes the save!

PICTURE: Not happening for Los Blancos

Real Madrid, Villarreal

There were doubts over whether Ancelotti would be able to make much of an impact given his recent track record in management at Napoli and Everton, but Real Madrid look strong. They have played within themselves here, though!

The way Camavinga has revitalised the Real Madrid midfield almost instantly has been very impressive. The teenager gives Ancelotti’s team a different dimension through the centre.

Indeed, Camavinga made his first La Liga start in the win over Real Mallorca during the week. The Frenchman is already considered an important member of the first team.

Camavinga has made a real impact in the Spanish capital. The young Frenchman has quickly made himself a fan favourite for his new club following the summer move from Rennes.

As already referenced, Benzema and Vinicius are in brilliant form, but it’s not just those two. It’s the likes of Asensio, Hazard and Rodrygo too. They have all started the season well!

One of the biggest successes Ancelotti has enjoyed this season can be found in the way he has revitalised Real Madrid’s attack. They look so dangerous in the final third of the pitch.

By scoring three times against Real Mallorca during the week, Asensio became the sixth player to score a La Liga hat trick for Real Madrid in the 21st century and the first since Alvaro Morata in 2017.

This has been better from Real Madrid in this second half, but Ancelotti will want more from them in the final 20 minutes. They need to do more to create some opportunities.

Courtois came to the rescue more than once for Real Madrid in their win over Valencia last weekend, and here tonight. There are those who believe the Belgian is currently the best keeper in the game.

PICTURE: Danjuma has been dangerous

Arnaut Danjuma of Villarreal CF, Casemiro of Real Madrid

While Vazquez has done a pretty decent job of deputising for Carvajal over the last 12 months or so, Real Madrid are a better team with the latter at right back. They will miss him.

Real Madrid were dealt a serious blow in the defeat to Valencia with Dani Carvajal coming off injured. That’s why the right back is missing for the home team this evening.

Rulli denies Benzema! The Real Madrid striker latches on to a pass over the top from Camavinga, but Rulli comes off his line to smother the shot at the second attempt.

Vinicius has also been in exceptional form for Real Madrid. Indeed, the Brazilian winger has five goals in his first six La Liga games this season. He is playing with real cutting edge!

Across the face! How didn't that end up in the back of the net? Foyth headed down a freekick, Alcacer directed the ball across goal, but Torres couldn't stretch far enough at the back post!

It’s not just that Benzema is Real Madrid’s top scorer, it’s that so much of their attacking play flows through him. Benzema is the conductor for Los Blancos in the final third of the pitch.

  • Francis Coquelin

Danjuma shot is saved! Real Madrid lose the ball in their own half, Foyth plays the pass to Danuma, but the Villarreal forward has his low shot saved by Courtois. That was a chance!

Big opportunity for Benzema! Another opening for Real Madrid with Casemiro finding Benzema at the back post with a cross, but he heads wide. The Frenchman might have been offside.

Benzema has had a direct hand in an incredible 14 goals (eight goals, seven assists) in his first six La Liga games this season. The French forward is currently in the form of his life!

Headed wide! Asensio plays a wonderful freekick delivery into the box, Militao got on the end of it, but somehow managed to head wide when he should have struck the target!

PICTURE: Still even in the Spanish capital.

Real Madrid have to improve in this second period. They were second best in the first half and Villarreal will fancy their chances of claiming all three points this evening!

  • 2nd Half

The second half is under way! It's still goalless between Real Madrid and Villarreal in this La Liga fixture!

  • End of 1st Half

HALF TIME: Real Madrid 0-0 Villarreal. The away side have been the better of the two teams and Ancelotti might have to make some changes at the break. Real Madrid have been poor.

Valverde with the strike! Real Madrid play a short corner with Modric setting up Valverde for the shot on the edge of the box, but he never really had control of that effort! Well over.

This is a bit better from Real Madrid. They are on the edge of the Villarreal penalty area, but the move doesn't really come to anything and the away side mop up the danger.

Real Madrid's best option at this point might be to play it long to Vinicius. The Brazilian winger has the pace to get in behind Villarreal. The hosts are struggling through midfield.

  • Vinícius Júnior

Real Madrid have been made to look slow in this first half by Villarreal. It's not just that the away side have been more energetic, they have been the better coached team so far!

Penalty claim! The Real Madrid players on the pitch and the fans in the stands believe Nacho should have had a penalty kick, but the officials don't agree and the claim is ignored.

PICTURE: Villarreal are on top!

Real Madrid, Villarreal

Emery has to be pleased with what he has seen from his Villarreal team at the moment. There are now some whistles around the Santiago Bernabeu. Frustration is building.

Big chance for Villarreal! Pina breaks in behind, he checks back and sets up Alcacer for the strike, Courtois makes the save and then the block is made on the rebound as well!

Ancelotti might have to rethink his approach here. Villarreal are more than holding their own at the Santiago Bernabeu. It feels like the balance of Real Madrid isn't quite right.

Rodrygo closes down Rulli as the goalkeeper receives a pass, but that's exactly what Villarreal want because it allows them to open up space and pass through Real Madrid.

The Real Madrid team tonight!

Indeed, Manchester United found this out to their cost in last season’s Europa League final when they were beaten in a penalty shootout by Villarreal. They have a winning mentality.

Under Emery, Villarreal have developed a habit of upping their game for matches against higher calibre opponents. Might that happen at the Bernabeu this evening?

Rulli had to save! Vinicius was looking for a teammate in the middle with a cross, but he mishit it slightly and the Villarreal goalkeeper had to make the save at his near post.

Benzema shoots wide! The space opened up for the Real Madrid forward 20 yards out from goal, but his strike was never really going to find the back of the net. It flashes wide.

Alcacer shoots over! It was a good passing move from Villarreal as they move the ball to the edge of the Real Madrid box, but Alcacer sends his strike over the bar. Emery applauds.

Villarreal have genuine quality, but they have struggled to win games over the early part of the season. The Yellow Submarine need to stop drawing so many matches, though.

The omens are good for Real Madrid this evening. They are unbeaten in their last 24 La Liga matches and are also unbeaten in 19 of their last 19 home games against Villarreal.

Emery become a bit of a figure of fun in the Premier League as Arsenal manager, but he has reminded everyone of his quality since taking over at Villarreal. They are a good team.

Real Madrid have started the season in exceptional form. They started the weekend on top of La Liga after a comeback win over Valencia last weekend and an emphatic victory over Real Mallorca during the week.

Courtois makes the save! Danruma breaks between two Real Madrid defenders and gets the low strike away, but the Real Madrid goalkeeper tips the ball around the far post.

This has been a very good start from Villarreal. Not only have they carried a goal threat in the final third, they also look very organised and well drilled elsewhere on the pitch.

He slipped at the wrong time! Real Madrid looked exposed at the back as Pino cut inside, but the Villarreal man slipped at the wrong time and the home side survive.

PICTURE: No early breakthrough

Real madrid, villarreal

Alcacer was nearly in! The pass was played through for Alcacer, but the flag was eventually raised against the Villarreal forward. The away team have started very well!

That is why Valverde at right back could be a bit of a risk for Real Madrid tonight. He is a very versatile player, but isn't a natural in that position. Danjuma could capitalise.

Villarreal have made a good start to this match with Danjuma played in behind Valverde down the wing. However, his cross into the middle was cut out before it could reach a teammate.

It appears Valverde is playing at right back for Real Madrid this evening which is slightly unusual. He will be up against Danjuma who has been excellent so far this season.

What sort of match will we witness this evening? These are two teams with real quality, but Real Madrid, as the home team sitting at the top of La Liga, are the favourites to take three points.
