Real Madrid v Rayo Vallecano live: Vinicius Junior not named in squad

It wasn't pretty but Real Madrid got the three points with a hard-fought win over Rayo Vallecano. The match wasn't without its controversy as Karim Benzema opened the scoring in somewhat dubious circumstances, leaving the opposing players and manager incensed.

But they all count. Here's how the action unfolded...

Rodrygo's 89th-minute strike seals the three points for Real Madrid and lifts them back above Atletico Madrid into second. It was a game of few chances that came to life in the last 10 minutes but it was Los Blancos who came out on top in the first game since Vinicius Junior was the subject of racist abuse.

De Tomas has a dig from distance but it's well over the bar and that should be that.

What an end to this game. Rodrygo picks up the ball on the edge of the area and coolly slots it past the Rayo keeper to make it 2-1!

And just like that, we're level. The game looked to be petering out but De Tomas had other ideas, receiving the ball on the left before taking a touch and unleashing a right-footed shot that found its way under Courtois. 1-1.

Kroos has a free-kick from the left and whips a ball deep into the box. Rudiger rises highest to meet it bit his header is well wide.

Carvajal floats a ball over the top for Benzema, who nearly flicks a hand at it as its too high for his head. He resists, just about.

Rudiger is down briefly with a bout of cramp. There is nothing else to report, sadly. Both teams appear in holiday mode already.

Asensio's pass for Rodrygo on the left is overhit, allowing the Rayo defence to reset. Kroos recovers the ball and looks for Camavinga but his pass dribbles out for a goal-kick.

Rodrygo looks to be clean through but play is halted for offside. On the replay it looked really close so it's surprising the linesman called that one so early.

Kroos lines up a shot from the edge of the area and strikes it well but it's blocked by the Rayo defence. The game has gone completely flat in this second half.

Valverde, Carvajal and Modric keep the ball on the right with ease, before the Croatian flicks the ball into the box and almost regathers in time for a shot. He's starting to show his quality and pull the strings.

All of a sudden, Rodrygo has acres of space on the left. He plays a one-two with Benzema in a tight space before trying to tee up Modric, but the Rayo defenders do just enough to stop the ball from reaching its intended target.
