Rod Fanni has signed for Rennes from Nice for an undisclosed fee, while Les Rouge et Noirs are also on the verge of taking Sylvain Wiltord back to the Route de Lorient.
Fanni, 25, was linked with a €4.5 million move to Celtic and Newcastle, but opted to remain in France.
A statement from Rennes read: "He can play both as a right-back and a centre-back."
Prior to his two seasons with Nice, Fanni featured for Lens over a period of three years.
Meanwhile Lyon president Jean-Michel Aulas has revealed that the club have agreed to allow Wiltord, 33, to leave for the club he left in 1997 in favour of Bordeaux.
"We have come to an agreement with Rennes," he said. "Now Sylvain has to do the same."
Wiltord joined Arsenal in 2000 and played in London for four seasons.
Rennes coach Pierre Dreossi has already signed Sweden defender Petter Hansson, playmaker Jerome Leroy and striker Mickael Pagis as he bids to build on last season's fourth place.
