Kylian Mbappe destroys Lyon with four-goal salvo

Paris Saint-Germain destroyed Lyon 5-0 with a Kylian Mbappe scoring four, and both sides finishing with 10 men.

PSG were looking for their ninth straight Ligue 1 victory this season, with a victory taking them eight points clear at the top of the table above closest challengers Lille.

They took the lead when Anthony Lopes clattered Kylian Mbappe following a defensive error from Ferland Mendy, giving Neymar a penalty to easily convert.

Presnel Kimpembe saw red for a wild challenge on Tanguy Ndombele before Lucas Tousart got a second yellow for a late foul on Mbappe before half time.

In the second half, an eight-minute hat-trick demolished Lyon’s spirit and ended the game as a contest with little fuss, but that did not stop Mbappe scoring his fourth of the game.

Will PSG go undefeated? Nine wins in a row mean that they are clear favourites for the league title, but they could conceivably never lose for the whole season. Whether that is healthy for France, or PSG’s Champions League ambitions, is another question.

Kylian Mbappe (PSG): Mbappe grabbed four goals, and won the penalty for Neymar’s opener. It was a superb performance that allowed PSG to play on the break while they drew in a Lyon side that had to chase for most of the match. He could have had more - this is a player who could still get dramatically better.

9’ - GOAL! PSG 1-0 Lyon. Neymar scores - A curving, stuttering run-up leaves Lopes diving before Neymar strokes the ball into the opposite corner.

32’ - YELLOW CARD - Ndombele is the latest counter-attacker to bring a foul from a PSG player, this time Kimpembe. He gets a booking, but in truth it should be a red - he went in high and with his studs up.

35’ - RED CARD! The ref uses the VAR system to check that foul from Kimpembe, and now made the correct decision.

45+2’ - RED CARD! As DJ Khaled says, ANOTHER ONE. Lucas Tousart, already booked, trips Mbappe as he drives forward and Lyon are level! On men.

61’ - GOAL! PSG 2-0 Lyon. Mbappe scores - Neymar skips into the box, has a shot blocked by a defender, and the ball rolls back for Mbappe. He hits a fierce, low effort against the near post, which fires to the other side before bouncing into the net.

66’ - GOAL! PSG 3-0 Lyon. Mbappe scores - Lyon fail to clear the ball, Verratti releases Marquinhos down the right inside the box, and he squares it for Mbappe to tap home.

69’ - GOAL! PSG 4-0 Lyon. Mbappe scores - With Lyon pressing high, Mbappe is released behind the defence and he lifts the ball over Lopes for a hat-trick.

74’ - GOAL! PSG 5-0 Lyon. Mbappe scores - Meunier gets through on goal and has a shot blocked. It comes back out to Mbappe who tries a pass before he gets the ball back, so he lashes it in goal himself.
