Manchester City agree Ilkay Gundogan transfer

The Sun claim an exclusive, revealing that Manchester City think they have agreed a move for Borussia Dortmund midfielder Ilkay Gundogan. Apparently City have a deal with Dortmund, and Director of football Txiki Begiristain and manager-to-be Pep Guardiola have already met with the player. The only thing to be agreed is the fee, with City wanting to pay something like £28 million, and Dortmund holding out for £34 million.
Paper Round's view: Gundogan has seemed keen on a move to England for at least a couple of years, and he was linked with a transfer to Manchester United at the start of last summer. Since then, rumours of a move to Manchester City have become more frequent and more convincing, and it would surprise nobody if a move was announced to the Etihad as soon as neither side has anything more to play for this year.

Bayern Munich to pounce for disheartened Alexis Sanchez

According to a story in the Mirror, Alexis Sanchez could be a target for German side Bayern Munich. With Arjen Robben and Franck Ribery struggling with age and injury, Sanchez is believed to be an excellent replacement for one or both of the wingers. Sanchez has struggled with his own fitness at times this season, and has not had the same impact as he did in his debut season. Carlo Ancelotti will be given funds to tailor Pep Guardiola's squad to his own tastes in the summer, and will know Sanchez from his time in Spain at Real Madrid.
Paper Round's view: Sanchez may be disheartened with Arsenal's failure to take advantage of a bizarre Premier League season when Chelsea, Manchester City and Liverpool all failed to challenge for the title, and will remember how much more ruthless the Barcelona side he played for were. While a return to Barcelona is very unlikely, and a move to Real Madrid divisive, only Bayern and Juventus would be suitable alternatives should he chose to move.

Marquinhos tug of war for Manchester United and Chelsea

Manchester United and Chelsea will both attempt to sign PSG defender Marquinhos, says the Telegraph, Chelsea tried to sign Marquinhos last season with two failed bids, the largest for more than £40 million. PSG may try to make a swap deal for any move this summer, with Memphis Depay or Oscar going the other way, and of course PSG remain interested in Chelsea's Eden Hazard. Diego Costa is another player PSG may consider as part of any move. Marquinhos has found it hard to establish himself over David Luiz and Thiago Silva in central defence in Paris, and could move to get more game time.
Paper Round's view: Manchester United and Chelsea both need to reinforce in defence. Gary Cahill isn't suited to being a leader in defence, and John Terry is likely to move on. For Manchester United, neither Chris Smalling nor Phil Jones are anything more than mediocre, and Daley Blind has been an underwhelming experiment in central defence. Should Jose Mourinho arrive, he would surely not miss Memphis were he included in any transfer. A move seems more than likely, though Barcelona might be interested, and John Stones might prove an alternative target for all three sides.

Klopp could tempt Mario Gotze to leave Bayern Munich

The Times suggests that Liverpool could be the preferred destination for Mario Gotze of Bayern Munich. Gotze has already worked with Jurgen Klopp at Borussia Dortmund, so it would be a relationship easy to rekindle. Gotze has failed to convince his manager or the crowd of his worth at Bayern, and might take the opportunity to leave when new manager Ancelotti arrives. Liverpool are in need of some new attacking talent, with Daniel Sturridge's fitness a problem, and Christian Benteke seemingly halfway out the door already.

Paper Round's view: Unless Liverpool manage to qualify for the Champions League via the Europa League, exploiting Klopp's reputation is their most effective way to secure top talent. Gotze would probably forego one season of top flight European football if it meant working with Klopp against and revitalising his reputation after the European Championships. Liverpool aren't short of money for at least one big transfer a summer, so this is entirely feasible.

Arsene Wenger planning a quiet summer transfer window

In the Guardian is a story that could hardly be described as a shock: Arsene Wenger is not planning much transfer activity this summer. The emphasis is on players who will leave, as Tomas Rosicky, Mikel Arteta and Mathieu Flamini are all expected to depart. Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain might also be sold. Granit Xhaka should be signed from Borussia Monchengladbach for £35 million, but otherwise Alex Iwobi, Mohamed Elneny and Francis Coquelin will be expected to step up their performances.
Paper Round's view: This is classic Wenger, to trust his younger players to do most of the job rather than signing enough senior players to give them the support to do so. Wenger is rarely open about transfer plans, though, and has spent large sums in each summer without ever going over the top. Fans are presumably expecting nothing different from Wenger given his track record over the last decade.
