Veteran midfielder Rui Costa played an instrumental role in Benfica's 2-1 victory at Belenenses setting up both goals to help his side climb up to second in the Portuguese Premier League standings
The 34-year-old Costa helped put Benfica in front on 13 minutes, his pinpoint long pass finding captain Simao Sabrosa, who fired home from just inside the penalty area.
Brazilian defender Luisao doubled the lead 24 minutes later when he latched on to a Costa freekick to head his side's second goal.
Belenenses midfielder Silas pulled a goal back in the 87th minute but any hopes the home side had of drawing level were dashed when captain Jose Pedro was sent off with a minute remaining.
Porto - who suffered their second league defeat of the season when they went down 1-0 at Uniao Leiria on Friday - remain top of the league on 40 points from 16 matches.
Benfica are on 35 points - two ahead of Sporting - who can reclaim second spot with a victory at Boavista on Sunday.
